    What does vocal rest mean? How long should I be on vocal rest? How to rest vocal cords? What is vocal rest anyways? How to vocal rest? In this video, I am answering all these questions, plus I will share vocal rest tips for singers, speakers and other voice users.
    First, I will talk about vocal rest definition because this concept is widely misunderstood. Not a long time ago voice rest was prescribed for any vocal issue. There are undeniable vocal rest benefits for sure, but it is not an answer to all vocal problems. Vocal rest exercise or pacing vocal use may be more appropriate options for many people. Absolute vocal rest meaning absolute silence is nowadays prescribed only for rare situations. Watch this video to learn more about vocal rest for singers and speakers and get practical voice rest tips.

    For all the worried folks in the comments, that see no improvement in their condition. VOCAL THERAPY WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!! My singing technique wasn't that bad, but oh boy my talking was terrible. I didn't realize how much breath pressure I was putting, always speaking with my chest and so loudly. My therapist helped me talk with a mixed voice and in a lower volume. Let me tell you, it will make your voice rest a lot more.
    Sending healing vibes your way my friends!!

    From my own experience with laryngitis I learnt that as long as there is inflammation, so pain and/or swelling absolute voice rest is really essential (for about 1 week straight), because it's very easy to strain the voice otherwise. As soon as the pain is gone completely voice exercises and using the voice silently, then building up from there has helped a lot. Greetings from a german speech and language therapist 😊

    I’ve done tons of voice rest in my life. I had a vocal Injury years ago and my doctor had me on voice rest whenever I could. Long story short, the injury healed. I voice rest now whenever I push my voice too hard or drink too much in a loud bar. I’ve noticed every single time I voice rest, my voice is weak for days and sometimes a week later the problems come back. In order to get back to full vocal health, it’s nearly a month long process of re strengthening my voice after any period of voice rest for me. It’s great for days but if I sing too much or push my body too hard excercising during or shortly after this period, I go back to square one. Ever hear of anything like this?

      @@healthyvoicetips Hi Katarina - I’ve had similar problems to the person above. A doctor also advised me to avoid situations where speaking loudly might be involved.
      But what does this mean for my life? Am I never supposed to go to a restaurant again? Or a bar? Or a party? Or present at work?
      This has been extremely frustrating for me, as I’m in my early twenties and I’m constantly avoiding seeing my friends, talking on the phone, going to bars / restaurants. What solution can there be besides avoiding these environments? Or is it one or the other - enjoy a social lifestyle, sacrificing your voice, or save your voice, but live as a hermit ?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 роки тому

      SOVT exercises are exercises with narrowing in the vocal tract, which creates back pressure and your vocal folds work more efficiently. You can check out my channel for more information about SOVT exercises. Vocal "sirens" are like sirens on an ambulance or fire truck (I realize that ambulances and fire trucks make different noises in different countries). Sirens are continuous sounds that move from low pitches to higher pitches and then back to low etc.

    Hi Katarina, thank you for your videos and insight! I was told by the ENT that my right vocal cord is larger than the left, and it appears I am recovering from a hemorrhage. I have been in speech therapy for 2 months now. My mid range is coarse and my high range is breathy and lacks strength. The injury occurred Jan-Feb of this year. I am curious as to how long the recovery period can take from what you have seen in your experience. It makes me nervous because it is taking so long and sometimes I feel like I will never get my voice back. Thank you for your input! I just really want to have some hope that this will eventually resolve no matter how long it may take.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 роки тому +1

      I am not sure about your particular situation but voice problems can take a long time to resolve. Especially complex ones like yours. It's good that you are in voice therapy because the most important thing is to develop healthy voicing so that the injury does not get repeated. I am not sure what caused your problem but if there is too much tension in your voice, consider some vocal massage or myofacial release for your head, neck and torso. Speak to your therapist. I hope this helps.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your kind words. Yes, singing is an athletic activity, during which your body is working hard, while your vocal folds move freely. But of course, it takes time to do that. You don't need to be scared when only air comes on some notes. It just means that your vocal folds are not coming together properly so that they cannot vibrate. I assume you are talking about notes in your high range. It takes technique to know how to use your voice without pushing too much or creating tension in the upper range.

    Hello Katrina , I saw you on UA-cam and was hoping you could shed light on my situation. 6 weeks back March 20th 2022 I got a soar throat and went to the hospital to checked. No COVID, no strep but red in the throat area. Voice at this time was normal, and I could even sing. 5 days later on the 25th as I was speaking at my job my voice literally dropped in pitch 3 octaves lower but very clear kinda like Barry White but I’m normally a tenor. I kept talking because my shift wasn’t over yet. I continued to speak for 4 hours like this until I went home and went to sleep. I woke up the next day March 26th 2022 to a whisper for a voice! I went to the ENT and he scoped me finding my falsetto vocal chords not moving when I sing. He says they won’t relax… My question is, am I damaged for good? Is there something I could do? Will my voice fully recover? Note… the ENT says I don’t have any nodules and no other problems he can see with the scope.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 роки тому

      Vocal nodules are a result of a vocal behaviour that brings the vocal folds together forcefully over a period of time. I would strongly suggest to work with a voice therapist who can help you develop a healthy vocal technique. Antibiotics or vocal rest will not help vocal nodules. Eliminating vocal behaviours that caused the vocal nodules will.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 роки тому

      It is good that you caught the nodules in early stages. Voice therapy should be able to help to eliminate them. Steam and vocal rest are good first steps but you should be doing some voice therapy. The vocal nodules are there for some reason and that reason should be eliminated. Most likely, the reason is vocal technique that causes vocal fold collision. Therefore, I highly recommend voice therapy with your local voice therapist.

    Hi there, 18 year old guy here. i think i've had vocal nodules for about 2 years and haven't really tried anything to fix it cause i didn't know. I can't even go to the doctor at the moment for various reasons so im trying to heal my voice on my own. If i speak for like more than 5 minutes my voice immediately dries up and i can't speak at all and it proceeds with a lot of pain afterwards. At one point it was so bad that when i spoke, my voice felt like something pointed and rough was scratching my throat. So i've been doing absolute vocal rest drinking lots of room temperature water (moderately) and drinking ginger tea. I've been trying to also get my sleep schedule in order as well which may have contributed to the issue as well. I don't really know what to do, i've had "VERY" bad technique when singing my whole life which caused the problem in the first place and i can't sing at all, now i can't even speak. It's really depressing but i'm trying.

      The main approach for vocal nodules is voice therapy or retraining of voice for more efficient voice use. I suggest that you work with a voice therapist. Voice rest can help somewhat but will not retrain your voice. Using your voice in an unsustainable manner can cause vocal nodules or strain again.

    HI! I've been struggling with a pesky vocal nodule for months now. I had been dealing with losing my voice easily since I lost it once over summer. I would rest it until it felt better, then as soon as I started talking again, my voice would start hurting quickly. I never noticed much difference in the sound of my speaking voice, just the feeling of my throat. My nodules got diagnosed in October, and the doctor prescribed me vocal rest and a low acid diet. Long story short, the low acid diet backfired but I rested my voice for a full week and a half and my issues persisted. I steam almost every day now, I have a humidifier in my room, I drink loads of water, I try to save my voice when I can. What am I missing?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  3 роки тому +5

      I am sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. The key element you are missing is a healthy vocal technique. The fact that your voice hurts after talking is a sign of vocal use that creates constriction, friction, or strain. You don't need to hear or notice a difference in the sound. Voice therapists are trained to do that. Untrained people may not be able to spot that. It's good that you are doing what you are doing in terms of humidification, hydration, preservation of your voice etc. But that in itself will not solve your problem. I strongly suggest that you visit a voice therapist and start improving your vocal technique to find more vocal ease in your voice. I hope this helps.
