      The Addams family exposed the tyrranny of normality and societal conformity and gives the oddity a breathing space. And the love between Morticia and Gomes is a couple goal everyone should strive for to have.

    Gomez and Morticia is the purest and best relationship there is. Also if I recall there was originally a plan to make a third movie in this series, but sadly the actor who played Gomez died after the second one.

    An interesting note is that the Addams Family was designed to be the opposite of the stereotypical family, but part of that is a husband and wife who absolutely love and respect each other.

    • @ronweber1402

      Ya way back when the regular comics like Andy Capp had he and his wife routinely exhibiting verbal and physical abuse the Addams Family were loving and kind, weird, but they truly loved each other. Same when in the 1960's The Addams Family TV program came out. At the time The Honeymooners was one of the most popular programs on TV with Ralph and Alice constantly verbally abusing and threatening one another. Then Mortica sashays in with Gomez worshipping her every step which turned that whole trope on its head.

    • @caitlin329
      @caitlin329 2 місяці тому +1

      Not quite; it's more that they *are* a normal family, but through the lens of the spooky and macabre. They're loving, supportive parents in a nuclear family -it just so happens that they're 'creepy and kooky' or whatever
      The whole 'a happy couple are the opposite of normal' thing is something I've only seen popularised since an interest post that's since been perpetuated.
      Would be cool if anyone could find a source for it; I have looked.

    • @jddonov
      @jddonov 2 місяці тому +1

      @@caitlin329 You can't really 'source' artistic interpretation. I do disagree that the Addams were the opposite of a stereotypical family. But you can't deny that at the time of the Addams inception the nuclear family had dominant husbands and more subservient housewives like Leave it to Beaver, Brady Bunch, etc. The familial dynamics of the Addams were much more equalized than the norm at the time. There were also episodes (the 60's series) when their kids would do 'normal' things which upset the parents but they were still supportive like when Pugsley joined the boy scouts (if I remember correctly). This also runs counter to the expectation of obedient children.

    I’ve always seen the Addamses in contrast to another fictional monster family, The Munsters. The Munsters were desperate to assimilate, to fit in to modern American society. Despite being different, they want to belong. Every Addams, on the other hand, does not care about fitting in, they are simply themselves wherever they go. If you look past the creepy, kooky nature of them, they are a fantastic model for a family. Love each other, be there for one another, and be yourself.

    @Mimzy_Fairchild 3 місяці тому +15

    This movie was a love letter to the source material of the Addams Family, aka the newspaper comic and the 60s TV sitcom. There are so many great little moments. For example, you looked confused when Morticia was cutting the roses off and keeping the stems. Every version of Morticia loves her flowers and working on her plants. However, in the TV sitcom, we're told that Gomez is allergic to roses. So she still grows them but only displays the thorny stem to protect Gomez. ❤
    I also love the scene where Fester is unpacking and Morticia says to him. "Cyanide? As if we'd ever run out." This joke comes from a comic panel in which Morticia has gone to the neighbor's house to ask if she can borrow a cup of cyanide, much like one would to borrow a cup of sugar. 😅
    When Gomez goes to collect the monthly expenses for Tully, you hear a lion roar, and Gomez says, "Down, Kitty!" In the TV sitcom the family has a pet lion named Kitty. 🦁
    Speak of which, the book that opens the secret passageway to the vault is titled Greed, but below it also names JP Addams as the author. It is a subtle nod to JP Morgan, who was known as a ruthless banker during the guilded age. Fan sites, however, have given this Addams' ancestor his own lore and his gruesome demise. 💰
    Any scene you see of the front porch of the Addams' mansion shows signs of where they dumped the tar from the opening scene. So yes, they really did tar those carolers.⚫️
    This is my opinion but the scene where Morticia reads to the children and then makes them cry about the poor witch dying I think is akin to the first episode of the TV sitcom in which little Wednesday comes home from her first day of school absolutely heartbroken because her class was read a book in which a knight slayed a dragon. "That poor dragon." Aghast Morticia and Gomez confronted the principal about reading a book about promoting violence towards someone or something simply because they are different or scary. 🐉
    It is a long-running gag in all versions of the Addams Family that Fester has a type of electric power or electric current running through him. He often did the light bulb trick on the TV show, and they also showed him using it on the newer Wednesday. 💡
    This movie and its sequel also set the precedent that Wednesday is older than Pugsley. In the TV sitcom, Pugsley was the older brother and was a character quite known for being a mad scientist/crazy inventor. Wednesday, on the other hand, was a character that liked drama and theater and was very much into learning new things, which suits the Hamlet scene they perform in the movie and a play performed in the sequel.

    A word of advice: when watching "The Addams Family", avoid logic.
    Our family, loved the series when it was on; and we were excited about this movie, if a little trepidatious. We loved it too. I remember a review and one of the comments was something like: "Morticia and Gomez, whispering sweet nothings to each other in a graveyard, are the last happily married couple in America."
    Fester is Christopher Lloyd. If you watched "Back to the Future", for sure you know him. Our generation delighted in his regular role as Reverend Jim in "Taxi", a burnout, eccentric and mind-dulled from addictions, but absolutely sweet. Here is one of his most famous scenes from that series: ua-cam.com/video/piPz1prPrzs/v-deo.html
    Angelica Huston, who played Morticia, is the daughter of legendary director John Huston, who was the son of legendary actor Walter Huston. When she was approached to play this role, she was a little nervous. "Who is our Gomez?" She asked, and when she heard that Raoul Julia was the choice, her eyes lit up. Julia was primarily a stage actor, but we're luck to have him on film so we can appreciate his enormous talent. He was already ill when they worked on the sequel to this movie, and his death stopped a third entry with this great cast.
    Always read the credits: you'll get to know the names and associate them with their work and their faces. You'll get to know the names of the people who designed the costumes, edited the final product, composed the music, so that as you watch more, the names will become familiar to you.

    The Addams family was based on a comic strip by an artist known as Adams. This movie captures most the the family elements introduced in the comic. Cousin Itt (the hairy guy) plays more of a role in the animated films following this one; & I vaguely recall him more in the 1960s that introduced the theme song, & the 70s Halloween special that followed a similar plot..
    Talking about creepy family genetics, I've been thinking about The Munsters, a 60s TV show on a rival network. While the Addams looked (mostly) human, the Munsters looked like classic monsters. Herman Munster is the Frankenstein creature ripoff. His wife Lili is the vampiress who may or may not be granddaughter of Count Dracula. Their oldest, a teenaged girl, looks normal to us so is ugly to them! Their youngest, Eddie, is a werewolf.
    I've been thinking about, & suspect it comes down to Herman being made from parts. Maybe a certain male part came from a werewolf. It was human when the daughter was made; wolf when the son was?

    They never really say they are supernatural. They’re just very weird and dark. Even though it seems like nothing will kill them and they can do amazing feats of physicality. They’re not supernatural in the way that they aren’t vampires or anything like that that. That’s the Munsters. Haha

    The face looks familiar to you ?--Christopher Lloyd (who plays Fester in this movie), also played doc Braun in back to the future and many other characters over the years. Don't try to understand too much about this movie--just assume that everything in this manor is weird. There is not more to understand. And if you don't already know, there is Addams family 2, different storyline, but the same family, dark humor. Remember the girl selling girl scout cookies, you'll her in part 2, with a bigger role.

    Hi Nia , Love your reactions in the Addam's family I hope you watch the second movie.
    I was really cool to tell you, don't be jealous but I actually met the Adam's family cast like 2 weeks ago At LA comic con , Yep I actually met them and it felt wonderful to meet every single one of them, Wednesday palmsley , lurch, uncle fester, mortis , They all look older and I told that I loved their Adam's family wish they could have done a third movie but the actor who plays Gomez he passed away.
    But it was So cool to beat the Addam's family and back to the future.

    I highly recommend chexking out a short lived independent series on UA-cam, Adult Wednesday Addams. The small crew that produced it came up with a great premise and honored the source material.

    The Addams Family exist in a cartoon world. The characters are whimsical and exaggerated. They're as supernatural as Daffy Duck.

    Technically they are supernatural, in that it's hypothesised they're under a curse that prevents the death of family members at the hands of other family members.
    Meaning, if you're in the Addams family, you won't die if another Addams does something to you, but someone outside the family can kill you.
    Consequently, that's where they get their enjoyment.
    You don't need to know that to have fun watching them, though.

    Good Christopher Lloyd movies:

    I don't think it has been confirmed anywhere, but the headcanon seems to be that no Addams can harm another Addams. No matter what they do. They can harm themselves, and other people are able to as well, though it seems to be somewhat difficult.
