The Witchers during Vesemir's time essentially suffered the same fate as Knights Templar - a military organization established by the king to 'restore order' which became too independent and corrupt with the times as they were no longer needed, eventually destroyed by a manufactured public outrage by those who wanted them gone.
There are differences though. The Knight Templars were actively involved in Europe's burgeoning banking so they still wielded a lot of monetary and political power in Europe. In fact, the French King was indebted to them. So the French king directly went against them with loose evidence and harsh torture at best (in the eyes of modern historians). He brought his royal army, not a mob of peasants and supernatural creatures, to besiege, torture and execute the Templars, all to erase his debts. All of this was done with the Pope's go-a-head. In the end, however, the Knight Templars still existed in other countries much to the king's chagrin. Even worse, he and his whole male line died so it was all for nothing. Still, an interesting foil to the Witchers, the Knight Templars were.
