I walked 48053 Steps! | Bridgwater and Taunton Canal Winter Walk | Somerset

- The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal in Somerset links the River Tone in Taunton with the River Parrett in Bridgwater. Its a recreation canal and stands alone. It is not part of the canal system.
It starts and finishes in the built up towns of Bridgwater and Taunton but the majority of it winds its way through beautiful lush green countryside and in this video you will see that in all its glory with a bright blue sky.
I point out the planets on the Somerset Space Walk that is spread out along the path with a ratio of 530 million to one! We visit the sun at Maunsel Lock too where there is also a wonderful tea room and a boat hire place which has a bar and rents out all sorts of boats and watersports equipment. Here is a link to their website: www.somersetboatcentre.co.uk

This video is a lot longer than a lot of mine and I am aware there is a lot that I have not covered but my laptop is struggling just with this length of video!!
I will re visit another time and try to bring you more. I need to go back to complete the route to Bridgwater. I had to make plan B not too far from Bridgwater!
*****Keep watching after I say Goodbye as my adventure continued after there!
I ended up doing 48053 steps! Find out why!!
I would highly recommend that you take a walk along the Bridgwater and Taunton canal if you are on holiday in the area. There is so much wildlife to see. You can also cycle it or paddle board it!
There are several car parks along the route, some of which I point out in this video. I also show you where you can park if you start the route in Taunton.

Thanks for watching this video! *****Watch past the point I say goodbye as the adventure continues!

Aww! Thank you so much! That’s such a nice compliment 🤗
Great video and photos. Beautiful and peaceful. Sorry the canal workers scuppered your walk and forced Plan B and then Plan C. 🙄🧐🏃♀️🤗😊
Thanks Cathy!! It really was so beautiful and peaceful! Yes, it’s a shame it did not quite go to plan with the pumping work being carried out! Never a dull moment in the vlogging life 😂
Bless you, that was a beautiful video, but what a long exhausting day for you. Thank goodness you had a cake & coffee to help fuel you on tour way.
Thanks Faith!
I walked just a few steps from the bus in Taunton to a cafe and stayed there for about an hour!
I was ravenous!! The cake and coffee was so good! I have not done that much exercise in ages! 😂
Will save this down and enjoy tomorrow Louise 🙏 looks fabulous 😍
Aw
Lovely thank you ❤ I walked the Taunton to Bridgwater in the 1980s sponsored walk for the whales and Dolphins last time I walked the whole thing lol. Beautiful video 🙏🌈✨
Oh wow! That’s a fabulous cause to walk the whole canal for! Thanks so much for the lovely comment. Very much appreciated 🤗
I think the word for your videos is charming.
I actually used to cycle to work along the canal there and it was more of a scramble back then. 😂
Good to see it now looked after and locks and bridges restored.
Thanks so much Shaun! Lovely comment!
That’s really interesting to know that it has improved so much since then. It’s really well looked after now!
Thanks for this lovely walk. I have been tempted to give it a go all the way to Bridgwater so it was wonderful to see up to Maunsel lock and beyond. It's a shame there isn't better public transport available at the half way mark to allow the walk in two halves for those of us less brave or able to do the full length.❤
Thanks so much for this lovely comment. ! I agree about the public transport. I believe the number 29 bus is really good (From Glastonbury via East Lyng - still quite a walk from Maunsel Lock). The day I waited for it and it did not turn up, I later found out was because it was on diversion due to flooding on the levels). I hope you get to enjoy the walk some time!
'The Planets' spread out across the canal really makes you think about the scale of the Solar System and how tiny we humans are within it. Good to see. This was another excellent video Louise. I liked the longer format (even if your laptop didn't!) - it made it more of an 'immersive' viewing and listening experience. You certainly had a wonderful day to film in. Great facts on the walk too. The cake 🍰 looked delicious. Some rather lovely views of across Somerset Levels too. Pity that they didn't have better signage telling you about the towpath closure in advance! I have been caught out like that on canals before. So annoying (and slightly scary!) about the bus not turning up as well! However it didn't spoil a rather excellent video. You have a winner here! Regards, Paul
Thanks so much Paul for all those fantastic comments! Really appreciate the feedback as I am never sure about doing longer videos like this.
This one definitely warrants being longer though 🤗
Really pleased you enjoyed it.
It’s such a beautiful walk and indeed I had amazing weather for it!
@@SouthWestSundays Louise ... Cathy here. I forgot to tell you I enjoyed the planets too 😊
Thanks Cathy! They are fabulous aren’t they! I will put sone info in the description box here or on the Facebook group as I cut out a clip that explained a bit more about it .. who it was set up by etc. and why.
What a beautiful walk Louise. Love the planet idea and the great looking food stop along the way. You certainly put the steps in on this one. Really enjoyed following along with you. 👍🏻🚶♀️🚶♀️
Thanks so much Watto!!
It was some walk!!! Really lovely! Took a day or two to recover and stop feeling so hungry afterwards 😂 Yes, the tearooms are real highlight! It’s a nice half way goal to reach them 🤗
I forget we have all this, must have a little wonder. My videos feature a bit of Taunton, nice to see it from another aspect
Thanks Tom! We have so much to explore on our doorstep!
Just beautiful, the canal, the frost...
Lovely video! I watched in chunks during the day but it’s a great treat to have this longer format. So much to see here. Ps perfect winters day - clear and crisp and better than all that rain !
Thank you Alex! That’s a really great idea to watch it in chunks. I am never sure about posting longer videos because I know people have busy lives. Some times like with this one it needs to be longer. So pleased you were able to watch it in chunks.
It was a gorgeous crisp and clear day! I enjoy cold weather much more without all that rain! The sun is transformative of mood and scenery ☀️
Lovely video.
I ran from Taunton to Bridgwater along the Canal this morning. It was glorious. Sun was shining. Stopped at the Lock Inn at Somerset boat centre for a pint of squash and a cake.
Got the train back to Taunton. (I only live 5 mins walk from the station)
Thanks for making the video. Subscribed.
Oh that sounds brilliant! It’s a lovely run! I did it when training for a marathon and half marathon. A pint of squash and a cake at the Somerset boat centre sounds ideal. I am hoping to cycle it soon on a sunny day. It’s a lovely cycle ride too. Thanks so much for subscribing and welcome to the channel!
@@SouthWestSundays it is so beautiful. Almost meditative when on a quiet stretch between the towns.
Will make it a regular route I think.
I’ll look out for you on your bike. 😀
Great video what a wonderful walk along the canal. It looked like a beautiful day. That cake looked so big and delicious. Photos turned out so beautiful it made it look so peaceful. New subscribers and supporters! Lovely channel!
Thanks so much! What a lovely comment! Thank you for subscribing too! Welcome to the channel!
It was indeed a beautiful day and very peaceful. The cake was huge and delicious and very welcome!
Wow that's alot of stops!! Great winter walk!!
Thank you! Yes , it’s a lot further than I am used to walking 🤗
Such a lovely winter walk though!
Lovely video Louise. I used to drive past it all the time then my friend and I cycling it in the summer. 👍♥️
Such a beautiful place but I never knew there was a canal in chard even though I lived there for 10 years 😳
Thank you Phil! It’s really beautiful!
Yes, I was unaware of the Chard Canal too! I learned so much doing this video!
Excellent!
Thank you!
I really enjoyed this Louise, a beautiful canal and your escapades along it! I have never seen a cake and jam station before, do you help yourself and leave money in an honesty jar? The cake and coffee pit stop looked good too! I'm so glad you reached your final destination safely, those buses are a joy at times lol!!
Thanks Amanda!
Really pleased you enjoyed it!
Yes, the cake and jam station was such a good idea! Definitely worth a walk just for that! Yes, there was an honesty box there for money.
Then cake and coffee pit stop at Maunsell Lock was so good!
Lovely video! Do you happen to remember whereabouts that jam/traybakes cabinet was?! I've never seen something like that before.
Thank you! Unfortunately I can never t remember where it exactly was. I hope to do another video near tte canal soon so hopefully I will see it again and I can get back to you. It was such a lovely discovery.
