It wasn't really that Stone Cold had beef with Hacksaw personally. He was upset with how WCW promised him all these things and put the US belt on him to keep him from the top. Then they were going to have him lose his position to old WWF talent.
    There's always context.

I worked on a show with duggan years ago. He was gracious to every fan, humble with all the boys, and made everyone feel included. During his match, the bell rang and duggan went stone serious and said "hold on! Who rang that bell?!" ..everyone laughed but duggan kept an angry tone and face and said "no im serious who rang that bell?!"...the time keeper slowly raised his hand, you could hear a pindrop...and duggan busts into a huge smile and yelled "oh ok, i just wanted to know, that was a heck of a job ringing that bell, you did great!" And gave him a big thumbs up. Lol i was about 4 feet from duggan during all this and even i couldnt tell it was a rib....dude just had a childlike friendliness to him, but an educated, smart, and professional demeanor at the same time. Kinda guy you could cut up about sports with and tell jokes, or sit with a nice beverage and talk about politics, life, and family. One of my favorites of all time and it was a pleasure being there with him on that day.

Hacksaw never had a clean finish whether he won or lost.
His matches always seemed to end in one of three ways:
1- double count out brawl to the back.
2- Hacksaw hits someone with the 2x4 for the W.
3- Someone interferes and Hacksaw gets rolled up for the three and he does the Hogan kick out immediately after the bell.

I get why Steve Austin didn't want to do the job. Ricky Steamboat was originally scheduled to defend the US title against Steve Austin, but he was suffering from a back injury and could not compete. As a result, Austin won the US title by forfeit. Austin would defend his title against a mystery opponent that was revealed to be Hacksaw Jim Duggan. This was Duggan's debut match in WCW. By him losing to Duggan it stopped all the momentum Steve had and was let go in less than a year. The entire situation devalued the US title by having three US Champions in one night.

Sometimes you have to be in the right spot at right moment or like in your case, just one small mistake and you would kept backside like Vince did it to you…

This is where I'll give Russo credit, he did want to push younger talent, it was just that every single other thing he wanted to do, was so awful, no one could notice when he had a good idea. Bischoff was bad when it came to young talent though.

@@jeremygott7709 Russo pushed all the wrong guys though. Jeff Jarrett was never a main eventer and nobody wanted to see him ever. Booker killed the ratings every time he had the belt. Mike Awesome should've been a main eventer, but he was turned into a joke by Russo. Rey Mysterio, La Parka, Psicosis, Juventud were all over, but racist Russo opted to turn them into overly racist 'comedy' acts (the overdubbed promos for example). Sean O'Haire had the potential to be a superstar, same with Chris Kanyon, they got ignored, instead we had to endure David Arquette, Lance Storm (the most boring wrestler in history) and the ultimate vanilla midget, Billy Kidman.

It’s your job to take whatever’s given and do your freakin best. Do you think Brooklyn brawler and a thousand other guys like going out and getting their asses squashed every night? “How hard he worked to climb the ladder” - everyone works hard in wrestling, it doesn’t entitle you to win, get the belt, hold the belt, or not do the job for a veteran if that’s what the PROMOTER WANTS. Man.. child-minds… imagine fans saying: Tom cruise can’t lose that fight scene - he’s worked so hard and deserves to win.
…and the “long-term outcome” is completely irrelevant to what happened that night. Imagine being that irrational - If Austin changes his name and character YEARS later and becomes the biggest star, THEN what he did was ok, and hacksaw is therefore jealous in recounting the story. Hopeless….

I don’t think Steve had a problem losing to Duggan but was promised things by WCW he didn’t get. So yeah, losing to Hacksaw was the straw that broke the ringmasters back.

I agree with the guy talking to Hacksaw about losing in a short amount of time being worse than having to make someone look good, unless that someone is Bill Goldberg. I fairly recently saw a match between Goldberg and Curt Hennig, that barely lasted a few seconds. My initial reaction was, nobody should be beating Mr. Perfect in seconds, but after watching this video, it dawned on me that maybe Curt wanted to be beat that quick, and I wouldn't blame him for that.

Austin was completely undervalued in WCW in 94. He should have been a top guy in the company but was held back. Once Hogan and his cronies came to WCW the writing was on the wall for Austin and he was further buried. Im sure Austins issue with dropping the belt to Duggan was that he was Hogsn crony and that was the only reason he was getting the belt and a push.

@@mikemck4796 you obviously weren't watching back then. Hollywood Blondes a middling tag team ? They were the best tag team at the time on par with The Steiners, Money Inc etc. and he was better than Pillman. WCW didn't use Austin correctly everyone saw his talent and knew he would be a star but Bischoff is an idiot and never could create new stars. He just used Vince's talent and household names. Why do you think once he went to WWF it only took him about 6 months to really get over after King of the Ring? Because his talent could not be denied. By the end of 96 he was working on top with Bret and co main evented WrestleMania 13 with him.

@@justinmartin1831 Reading what you wrote is strongly suggesting you were not watching back then. Pillman was clearly the face of that team. They were in WCW as that tag team. But it was clear when wcw and wwf had both those guys on their roster, Bryan was the guy they thought would be a star.
They also had no where near the following of the steiners. There’s an argument for the steiners being the greatest tag team ever, not named the road warriors.
Money inc was a wwf tag team, and were a place holder heel team to swap the belts through.
At best, the Hollywood blondes were maybe the “smokin gunns.” The promoter tried to give them a push, but they just were not it.

Duggan had reduced himself to just being a shoulder block and thumbs up guy and settled for that. He was a long ways off from his Mid-South days. By the time he got to WCW, his laziness made him nothing more than mid-card talent. Duggan should have been putting over younger talent due to the shape he was in and how limited he worked.
