Watches are not getting boring. Watch collectors are boring. They salivate over the much-ado-about-nothing watches. C'mon, a Rolex inscribed by Joanne Woodward to Paul Newman? Are the souls of rich people really this bankrupt? I've got an idea. Get off your ass and make your own history. How about inscribing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso for your significant other? There is a lot of innovation in the watch industry, both in terms of design and movements. For instance, in terms of design, Ming took the world by storm but, 15 minutes later... next. What else? As far as watch movements go, is there a more remarkable movement than the Citizen 0100? No one cares. MIH watches are innovative inside and out, and then there's Ressence. Loads of innovation. In this video, Christopher Ward's Bel Canto is an example of a beautiful, innovative watch but, for snobs, because it's not exclusive it's not bougie enough. Watches today must be walled off from plebeians to be desirable, like Leonardo DiCaprio's Tiffany-Blue Nautilus. Again, the cult of celebrity rears its ugly head. There's a new and innovative watch around every corner but people don't buy watches to tell time or because they're beautiful. Let's get real. Guys buy watches to show the world that they're dicks are bigger than everyone else's. If by this point you're feeling a bit flaccid, cheer up, I've got the cure. Nothing gets the juices flowing like an Adrian Barker Nato Strap... on your wrist.
Thanks so much for having me guys. Always happy to talk watches with you chaps. And had I known the video was being recorded I would have chosen better headphones and used a better camera! 🤣
I really liked Adrian’s point that people like the exciting colors and rant and rave, then buy the conservative colors. I think people are more willing to be fun with a cheaper watch, but when they spend Rolex money they want it to go with everything.
This is exactly me. I have 2 “luxury type watches” tudor bb 54, and 41 datejust fluted on jubilee w black face” i have appx 20 watches. My other less expensive watches have a bit more color! But not alot lol
It’s not just that, you can’t buy the exciting colours as they always super limited and hyped. Like a Sub I would love to get the green bezel but the likelihood AD going to give that to the guy on the street is slim to nil, so you have to go with the boring black just have an opportunity to get it.
5:30 I work at an office supply retailer. We also sell cheap office chairs and furniture. When we have the bright, colorful gaming-style chairs up at the front of the store, we sell more furniture than when we have the sensible chairs up front. It's a halo product that stands out and gets people to look at what else we have. (The gaming chairs also still like hotcakes though, especially the sensible all-gray ones.)
I think there are certain archetypes of watches that have been around so long that they've become the default in your mind's eye. Like if I said "electric guitar" you'd probably picture a Fender Stratocaster, if I said "sports car" you'd probably picture a red Ferrari or maybe a Porsche 911. Likewise if I said "digital watch" you'd probably picture a F91W, and if I said "dive watch" you'd probably picture a black Submariner. And, finally getting to the point, I think once you start collecting something any collection feels like it's missing something unless you have one of these archetypes, or something very similar. So yeah, a black Sub might be boring but I still want one!
@@davidhunternyc1 That’s really interesting! I’m guessing you’re in the US? In the UK a tissue is a tissue, Kleenex hasn’t had enough sway to change the language that much over here. Similarly we call them plasters, not Band-Aids, and cling film, not Saran Wrap. But we do call a vacuum cleaner a Hoover!
Great combo. Couture fashion is the example Adrian refers to re bright sofa - couture is the king and then flows down to ready to wear - same as colourful watches.
Surprised Farer didn’t get a mention. They seem to be able to produce eye~catching watches with splashes of colour, without being too “out there” and frightening the horses. Nice build quality too. I think a lot of conformity stems from the use of common movements, which is to be expected from the smaller brands that don’t have the muscle to produce their own. But maybe there’s scope for more innovation in the way the complications are displayed? I’m thinking of the Nomos Zurich Worldtimer for example, that has the little window displaying the time zone and therefore keeps the minimalist “Bauhaus” aesthetic.
Yes. The moment the average Jo who had no interest in watches started to buy them for profit was the day watches became boring. I used to look forward to buying a watch, enjoying wearing it, trying various makers but today it’s so saturated Iv stop bothering.
Colour and flair are just sugar hits. If you eat a big bag of candy you love it at the time but get sick afterwards. Watches are the same. The colourful watches have the upfront wow factor, but you get sick of them so quick. A bit like fickle fashion. The boring black dials and white dials might be “boring’’, but they have staying power.
Its the difference between style and fashion. Style is for ever, fashion is fleeting. And an exciting watch begins to feel like a bit of a chore, you need to find a reason to wear it rather than just have go to watches.
At this same hour, I suddenly fell in absolute LUV with Milgauss 1019 tho Rolexes always looked at me like aluminum cans from historical catalogues, unlike always great-looking Tudors
Watches reminds me of pocket knives: sometimes a design is accused of copying another but if one considers the "barebones" of such a tool, it's impossible to avoid the basic concept of blade-and-edge. Those that try to stretch the concept risk end up making a bizarrely impractical tool, like those weird mall ninja knives with pan-grade steel. Watches may be at this point. I don't mind "boringness", as long as there's a minimum of attempt at originality.
@@garynico9872Benchmade doesn’t make particularly unique knives apart from the Osborne and Spyderco just makes ugly blades shaped like a pelican’s head with a hole in it.

Based on my highly scientific study of looking around at the train station, the 2nd most popular type of watch is a smartwatch. Number 1 is 'none'. We may talk among ourselves about watches becoming boring but out in the real world, wearing any kind of dumb watch is a choice to be different. (Not necessarily cool or impressive. Just different.)
Yes, I tend to agree. These days you are different if you wear a watch tbh. I've noticed the same.... most people don't wear one because, "oh, I just use my phone", where as I hate having to dig my phone out to see the time! On the rare occasion when I forget to wear a watch when I go out I find myself looking at my wrist and then realising I'm not wearing one LoL. Reality is, most people don't care if you're wearing a watch or not, and if they do notice, are more likely to comment on it if it is a cheap no name blinged out fake diamonds looking, than if you're wearing a Rolex or similar. As for "boring", that is definitely a matter of personal opinion really isn't it? A high end brand can come out with a simple uncluttered dial, and be criticized for being boring, yet a smaller brand will do something similar and it's praised for its simple, uncluttered, "clean" look!? :-) It's all about what you like that matters IMO.
I think of “boring” in niche like these akin to a Toyota Landcruiser. One of the best, over designed suv for 99% of daily driving. And it looks so boring compared to flashy suvs. But if you know *why* it’s so amazing you know that person isn’t flashy but respectful of design

You get tired of anything if you spend too much time interacting with it without a break, but you can be "tired of it" in two ways - you can be bored with it, or you can be sick of it. Spend too much time with a submariner and you'll get bored, too much time with an OP bubble dial (or even a little time) and you are sick of it. You can continue to wear the sub after being bored with it - there is just no more emotion when you look at it. But it is still useful for telling the time, which it needs to be able to do. The micro scene does much for enthusiasts to get more crazy watches that feels more custom per liking.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication ,,,,,,,,,,, just saying.
There is a lot of boring among the established players. There are unique options from disruptors or from a few old watchmakers that have a niche that are not profitable enough for big corporations to persue.
That is why i bought a Farer Roche. Nomos is next. My uber grail is a Lange 1. Just to five you an idea of something different.
There is a lot of
I watched this after wearing a Seafoam Green watch with my black and white suit today.
I will never be cool enough to wear Lewis Hamilton level fashion...but if I could get the white button down collar Oxford with his initials on it...there we go...
well - what would your watch look like? ... ... design, Cost, budget, restraints, problems, laws, tax, expectations, demands, certifications, controls, - oh, restrictions, confines... well & more
rolex is always boring
I'm puzzled why everybody seems to dislike the bubble dial
Imo its totally fun
I would like to buy some boring watch, the truth is that they are for sure more and more expensive 😢 I just have stopped collecting them
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubble dial is the watch that Colin Hunt of The Fast Show wears.
I love my Mr. Jones Sun & Moon watch. Different but fun.
My favorite watch guys together - love it.
You're wrong about the bands and marketing music is one of the few things left where the anomaly it's actually what's the thing.
The Grateful Dead, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Imagine Dragons, Justin Bieber all examples
*A quick look at what Invicta offers says "NO" watches aren't boring at all. Ruchard Mille agrees.*
That bubble dial would be my daily!
Love the crossover ! Captain Boring on watch finder 😊
Only you three could start talking about watches, and have a debate about the resale value of trousers........ :D
I literally have that OP41 with black dial
Why do you keep talking about this brand..??? Even when talking about other watches..
The bubble watch doesnt have to match anything , no one has to like it or even wear it. Its an investment piece only avery few will be allowed to buy it, especially not the 7 people in the world who actually likes it and would wear it daily .it will be worth a fortune it representatives of whats wrong with rolex investments not dailys
I’d buy a Bark & Jack GMT watch; it better come with an accessory B&J NATO though!
Nice surprise!
Adrian better be on guard, that bookshelve looks like it's ready to fall on him.
The Bubble Dial really feels like the 50 year old white collar professional that’s trying to hang out with the college kids.
Review Bens new watch the Spagetti Scmetti iCon.
You want fun and colors and interesting designs? Just look at the 60s and 70s watches. The book Retro Watches gives a great overview. No need to spend thousands.

Capt. Boring pops in! Great video.
Up to the moment when Tom starts to speak, he looks so serious!!
I'm disappointed that Aragon only gets mention as a throw away side comment. This is a quality affordable brand that never gets the respect it deserves. Put some respect on Master Wing's name 👊🏾💪🏾
Are watches getting boring 🤔???? My answer is no not at all its just the bs politics it really nerve wrecking I remember going to a remarkable watch store and getting any watch i want now this waiting list and middle man dealers going threw them to get watches over pricing its boring not fun no more its being a task now a bunch of sheep just wanting the hot new thing as people like me who love the culture and history of any amazing brand now its just tiring
Always were TBH.
I'm constantly surprised at how much content you can squeeze out of it. Good content I should say.
Oh NOOO! I’m doing an OP video for next Sunday and everyone is going to say I copied Watchfinder! 🤣💕 BUT LET THE RECORD SHOW, this video was already in the pipeline! 🤣💕💕💕💕
