When my husband and I got married in 1968 he was in the Army and we didn't get to have a reception and have our first dance. Fast forward 20 years and we were at a 50th wedding anniversary celebration. My husband and I were part of the entertainment so he and I were on stage behind the curtains. The dj played the Anniversary waltz and I was peeking out watching the sweet old couple dancing. My husband tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned to look at him, he took me in his arms and we waltzed behind the curtains. It's one of my most treasured memories of my dearest husband. We didn't get to celebrate our own 50th anniversary as he died from cancer not many years after this precious moment in our lives. I was blessed to have him for as long I had him in my life. ❤

I fell in love with Al Jolson when I was about 13 or 14 years old around 1959.
Kids today in 2020 will never appreciate what a great singer he was.
So sad kids today don't appreciate music of long ago. So many great artists.

when I was little, my grandmother would sing Al Jolson songs all the time. she showed me the Jolson story, and though i know some parts aged extremely poorly, his love for entertaining stuck with me. As the years went on, we'd sing together, i went and studied acting, i wouldnt be the man i am without her help and guidance. I sang this song once, by myself from beginning to end, and she heard me. And she had a look of pride in her eyes, like... 'i'm glad I taught you, and i'm happy you listened'. The last song we sang was Sweet Sixteen, and even in her last hours, she was in perfect tune. We both were. RIP my dear grandmother, you were a lifechanger.

I don't know if it's intentional, but the lightening....... watch when he's retired and how dark Larry's eyes look, compared to the moment here and in the nightclub when he sings and there's a sparkle in them again. I don't know if they meant to do it, but it's a visual that sticks with me to show, like you said, he just HAD to sing to people.

For my wonderful nana who fell asleep on her 57th wedding anniversary and this was played at her funeral. My pop raised my mum with this film, I was in turned raised by my pop with this film, my 10 year old son is the 4th generation to now have this film to return to to think of wonderful childhood memories. The jolson story, showboat, 7 brides for 7 brothers and many others.... there will never be magic like them again. At only 32 years of age, but now moved away from home, I watch this film with the most amazing sense of being "home" Never watched this without a tear since my wee nana left us

My wife's late mother was given a musical box that played this tune for an anniversary present. It still brings tears to my wife's eyes. Her late parents were a very loving couple who met in very romantic circumstances, as two brothers married two sisters (but not on the same day). Her late aunt, from Greece met her uncle whilst he was serving in Germany just after the war. They had about 70 years together, having married in 1947. Sadly missed.

I call this the scene of faces; when you watch the entire film, you understand that Al Jolson's whole life was about singing, and performance...
He had no other life, for what he did WAS his life...
As the story here goes, Al had given up singing and show business to make his wife happy and just be at home...
Here you see the faces of his wife, Manager, and parents, when dad finally gets Al to break his singing silence, and side a song for the anniversary...
What they witness, is the extreme joy and happiness that Al displays, as he is again doing what his whole life was about ; singing.
Like an intoxication, the magic of being who he was again surfaced, and he beamed with joy forgetting that he was no longer on stage singing just for a moment...
The faces tell the story as the others realize how unhappy Al really was NOT singing, and being at home...
Soon after, his wife left him so that Al was again free to go back to the stage, and live the life he was meant to as the Singer to live faces.
I relate much to this story, and this part, for I have no other life then what I do in the Amusement Entertainment Business....
It is who I am, and even though I work crazy endless hours, if I didn't do what I do, then I would die...
For I have no other life then what I do; nor would I want any other.

When this film was first released, I must have seen it ten times. It remains one of the best films ever. made. Every aspect of it is honest, and moving, Larry Parks with Jolson's voice was the most perfectly beautiful man I'd ever seen.. My reaction remains the same. This scene is cinematic perfection. Ahhhh the good old days.

i agree it's a great film, i've been a lover of jolsons music and voice since i was a kid, however, from what i'm aware, the movie is quite a gentle fiction, in comparison to the real life of al jolson, also many thing's aren't remotely accurate in the movie, for example, his mother died when he was 8, and he ran away with his brother etc, according to "the ole grape vine" there were many bad things that he did, to other acts etc, however whether that's all true or not who knows, we weren't there, but it's certainly the story that's told of him...... i think the film is possibly a much more pleasant fiction than the reality of the man, perhaps in some ways it's how jolson would've liked things to be, his fantasies perhaps (for some parts) i'll enjoy the film for what it is, the sequel and his music, there's never been a better singer in my opinion, and i agree his voice coming out of the mouth of larry parks, is absolutely magnificent.... however i won't idolize this man, or any other... well, other than Christ that is.....God bless.

@@oldgypsytap that can definitely true, i meant in this respect more due to it being a "based on a true story" movie, it's really more of a fiction, n now i have to watch it as such, far too much isn't as it actually was, it's a sweet fiction though.

      Hello amazing fan.
Thank you for your beautiful comment.
I’ve seen a whole lot of “RIP” attached to my name all over the internet. This is the reason I decided to debunk this false new of my demise.
Late Ton Jones was the one who conceived the twist on Romeo and Juliet with composer, John Donald Robb. He died on the 11th of August of cancer in his home in Sharon.
Please disregard all the false publications on the internet.I’m still alive and much healthy.
      Thank you beloved fan..
