I miss those days back when metal drummers played with more power and aggression than technical abilities. Most of today's metal drummers have way more technical chops than the older generation but the tempo and kicks going a little off here and there that makes it sound so human and relatable to me personally. That's why I still go back and listen to all those early thrash albums with the Dave Lombardos, Gar Samuelsons and Lars Ulrichs of this world who never had that drum machine-like precision and the same velocity for each drum and cymbal hit. The production also added some life to the drums sound.

Bostaph attempting to play the straight 16th note fast doubles in this song sounds like a large tote of work boots being kicked down a flight of concrete stairs.
Skankhunt41 Casey J, when you guys get asked to fill in drums for one of the most skill demanding bands in the world, then you can critique, no one is gonna be as good as Dave in Slayer, but to outright insult Paul over his skill is just fucked up. Where’s your perfect cover? If you’re gonna critique his playing then send me the link so I can know that you have the skill to back up what you’re saying. Sit down, I don’t think Bostaph needs another fucking backseat driver.
Drummer of 20 years here. Lombardo and Peart are the reason I picked up the sticks. I even have Dave's 10pc Tama Artstar kit and just formed a (classic era) Slayer tribute band. It's not a requirement people be a professional musician to critique others. Some can still understand and tell the difference between a great, good or bad drummer. I love some of Paul's work. Divine Intervention was him at his best. I've seen Dave and Paul live several times and not just in Slayer. I can objectively say Paul has declined over the years - his timing, fluidity, and precision. Dave on the other hand hasn't lost a step. You can easily compare the two on UA-cam videos. Most of the time it's not even close, especially on the double bass. On the hands, Paul just doesn't have the level of groove, dynamics, fluidity that Dave has. Slayer's 2nd best drummer in terms of live performance was Jon Dette. I saw him on the Undisputed Attitude 96" tour and he absolutely fucking killed it.
Of course you don't! Only the guy editing your recordings with his ProoTools will make you want to believe that. Be very well prepared, get a good sound, focus and try to get a good take - then there will be no editing ;-)
Just read an article this weekend interviewing Dave for the RIB anniversary. Dave said he was only 20 years old when he recorded this album and did not use a click track!?!?!? 😮😮😮
As a metallica fan, this dude is away much MUCH better than Lars. Im seriously impressed. I thought Dyers Eve the drum was incredible as hell, but this is away better.
No, it is not. Dyers is way much harder to play, and probably not slower. The problem is that Dave plays Angel live since middle 80's actually note for note, even faster sometimes. And Lars... Ugh.
Love that Dave’s bass drum never sounded clicky but like an actual bass drum

Lombardo’s feel and precision on the drums is akin to Hetfield’s similar approach to rhythm guitar(at least in the 80’s up through the black album)..
