- In a Ringer all-star event, Amanda Dobbins and Sean Fennessey are joined by five of The Ringer’s biggest podcast personalities: Rob Mahoney, Joanna Robinson, Van Lathan Jr., Mallory Rubin, and Chris Ryan. Together, they’ve assembled to draft the best movies of 1999, a stellar year in cinema, with the release of such fan favorites as 'The Matrix,' 'Fight Club,' 'The Blair Witch Project,' and 'The Sixth Sense.'

I watched The Matrix the same day of Larry Johnson's 4-point play against the Pacers, one of the most memorable days in my life.
As someone who listens to the podcast on 1.2x speed, the "slowness" of the video really jarred me at the beginning lol
And Mallory and Amanda sitting in exactly the same position right next to each other is hilarious
i do the same - but you CAN speed the video up too. I watched this at 1.25 speed (1.2 is actually slightly better)
Couldn't agree more with Van Lathan Jr. about Arlington Road. Haven't heard anyone describe my feelings about a film so accurately in a very long time. Great episode.

2. The gap between the 1st three is quite close and arguments can be made for ranking them in any order.

I’m in my 20s so I grew up with it.
But I’d argue it’s the 97-99 effect. Too many good movies. The bar was high and B movies were shrugged off. Go watch The Mask of Zorro in 2024 and tell me it’s not a fun time though.

Toy Story 2 is the best one, and one of the best movies of this year! Mallory’s right and Sean-Chris-Amanda are crazy.
Perfect Blue and Princess Mononoke are hard to pin to 1999 since they came out originally in 1997. PM definitely was released in the US in 1999 but Googling I cannot find a US release date for PB.
Wonderful podcast stream! 1999: The Matrix, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, Toy Story 2, The Virgin Suicides, American Beauty, Sleepy Hollow, and many more. Great year. 1981: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Reds, Excaliber, Stripes, American Werewolf in London, Escape from New York, Das Boot, My Dinner with Andre, many more. Arguably equal or better than the '99 movies over all. Cheers!

BEST DRAFT EVER! Always need more more people so that the movie choices go deeper and the strategy becomes more important. Plus the mix of personalities was spectacular.

I'm 30 and I recognize that is no longer young but I love Magnolia and hadn't discovered it until 3-4 years ago.
The hardest I laughed in 1999, maybe the 90's as a whole was while watching Drop Dead Gorgeous in the movie theater. I was sitting next to my cousin and we were both loosing our minds at this movie... to the point that the rest of our group was concerned.
i am loving seeing the nonverbal communication and interaction between mal and amanda that we would have missed out on with audio only!

Eyes Wide Shut is a weird as all fuck movie (and im not even talking about the x-rated stuff). But it also could never be the best movie of that year because Kubrick sure he started it, but he didn't fully make it. If he did though sure, I could see it being one of the best movies maybe ever.

First time seeing Sean and Amanda's faces andI have some Cognitive Dissonance going on.
Not the first time seeing the faces and it's STILL a crazy weird experience. Sean and Chris especially, feel like Amanda "matches" her voice and speech pattern.

Are rereleases allowed? Mallory selected Princess Mononoke which was originally released in 1997 in Japan and released in 1999 in North America.
I agree with Van! American Beauty is one of my favorite movies! I have the DVD with the commentary and bonus features. I need to watch it. You guys brought up a lot of movies from '99, that I forgot about. I remembered Three to Tango, when I got up this morning. It's good but not great.

The revisionist history on Phantom Menace is wild. All these people believe they hated the movie immediately. That’s not how it was. People loved the film and it took a long time for us to admit out loud it wasn’t good.
I know the Tower and Blockbuster she's referring to. Right next to Lenox Mall. It was open to Midnight.
99 and 01 are my favorite movie years. Magnolia, Office Space, Iron Giant, Blair Witch, Eyes Wide Shut, Audition, Election, Fight Club and Cruel Intentions would be my favorites but theres a ton more to pick from. Looking forward to watching this draft
