Extremely underrated in my opinion. Excellent singer, songwriter and musician. A choice I’m surprised you made Fil but I should not be. You are A true lover of music and excellent musician yourself. You see talent is not limited to one type of music. This man wrote a ton of songs for other people as well

Neil Sedaka had a an amazing career both as a song writer and as a performer over several decades. His big hit “Laughter In The Rain” has got to be one of the most romantic songs ever. When I first heard it I thought it was a female vocalist the tonality and tenor of his voicing was simply gorgeous. And his ability to sing in a higher key was a perfect complement to Elton John’s vocals on “Bad Blood” which was a great pop rock tune. I hope Fil analyzes those songs, they’re such amazing compositions and arrangements.

Laughter In The Rain his biggest hit but it almost got beaten to the punch. Lea Roberts put out a version of it 2 weeks before Sedaka was due to release his and as soon as he heard it he managed to rush release the single and go straight to #1

The mid-‘70s was a great time for Sedaka. Around that same time, he also did a great remake of “Breaking Up is Hard to Do”, turning his original pop jingle into a bluesy torch ballad.

What got me to think about him as a singer songwriter and performer is the very fact that Elvis mentioned him at one time about his ability to write, compose and perform. You nailed it Fil. Elvis said the amount of songs this man has written for other people was extremely impressive. I did not realize how many songs he had written for others until doing a little research.

Was in Canada years ago and saw Neil Sedaka playing. I lucked out and my Dad and I got front row seats. The venue Neil played at this hotel was packed! Neil played like he was decades younger. He was sharp and brilliant in his musical skill. Great show. Gino Vannelli was at the same hotel playing but sold out but looking back I’m thrilled I got to see Neil. He is a true rock music pioneer.

Elvis also performed this, just before he died. I found it heartbreaking. Neil's well, when you write the song, you're going to go places the others just can't. I've not heard this before, and found it very, very moving.

(Looking forward to that future video already!) Wonderful explanation of his vocal delivery, yours was cool, too! Thanks, Fil!

I adore Neil Sedaka. Grew up listening to his music and was lucky to see him three times in concert. One of the best American songwriters ever. One of the artists from the Brill Building in the early '60s. Carol King was a friend & crush of his; wrote, "Oh, Carol" about her. His cousin is Eyde Gorme. Was one of the first artist to use layered vocals on his recordings!

Great performers understand the importance of using Dynamics. That moves the song along stirring the emotions. Anyone can play a song end to end with the pedal to the medal, but true craftsmen use great dynamics. Sedaka was one of them. Great analysis Fil.

He is an incredible musician and what a tome of music he and his partners in music have brought to life. He also has a huge heart and almost everyday he has a mini concert on his UA-cam channel, 3 songs to cheer up all who wish to listen. His ego isn't so big that he can't sit at his piano in a Tee and hair barely combed, ending with love to us all and will see you tomorrow, love him much!

I remember Neil had a big hit in the 1970s and when it was released I loved it. I thought it was a female singing because his voice is soft. I bought the 45 thinking this lady’s name was Neil - unusual. Then while listening more carefully to the lyrics I realized he was a man. The song was “Laughter In the Rain”. It’s still a great song to listen to today.

I thought I knew about the songs of Neil Sedaka. I never have heard any version of this song before. I did a search and there are over 10 performances of this song by Neil available for view. I found this interesting bit. The Andy Williams version of this song was a #4 UK hit in 1973, two years before the Carpenters' version came out. There was a completely different song called "Solitaire" that was a hit for Laura Branigan in 1983. I am a sucker for anything involving an orchestra so I give "Solitaire" a "like". Hmm, I thought I was the only one that had their guitar out for Fil's show.Oh,analysis request. Neil wrote so many songs. A great talent. His contributions to music are large though he seemed to be a regular and nice person.. Great analysis by Fil too. Fil is incapable of providing just an average critique. They are all detailed and sharp.

Thank you once again for a lovely breakdown...had a tear in me eye with this song, having played thousands of gigs singing and playing since the 70s,.now realising how my vocal approach could have been better and bad habits crept in early on..love your videos ..learn a lot every time.many thanks..

From the same concert he sang Laughter In The Rain and he sounded as great as on the studio cut. Neil is a great song writer and a great singer who sings effortlessly. What a talent! ..A real gem!

Its wonderful how his mother supported him. I love this song, and his vocal control has made it even better.

Beautiful song. I love just playing chords on the piano. It sounds so rich....
Also, you have an amazing voice!

It is kinda cool that while you explain the chords your voice automatically goes into singing mode with most of them, mirroring the chord.

Fil, it's so great that you appreciate all types of music. You're awesome. 🙂♥️
In '74, I first heard, "Laughter in the Rain", and like others, thought it was a woman.. 😂 That was my first introduction to Neil Sedaka, and then "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (the remake), and then "Bad Blood" with Elton. I learned early on his importance in music. Whether you like his style of music or not, you can't deny that he was a great songwriter with a unique voice.
    Thanks, Fil. 🙂♥️

Whenever a video is flagged you should do a cover of it instead! You got such a great voice Fil! I'd love to hear you doing covers. Even if it's a duet or there's harmonies. Just record multiple times :) It was a long time a go you did one now! "I dont wanna miss a thing" was 2015!
