The most immersive part of the Wethermon fight was the fact that he was reusing all of his attacks at a higher frequency, instead of some arbitrary hand-to-hand fighting skill increase. As dangerous as he is, and as weird as this video game's lore and NPC logic is, it's STILL a video game and manages to stick to that logic! I'd be less amazed if this point wasn't specifically ignored in almost every video-game based Anime ever made in the past when it came to boss fights.
Honestly, besides the 11/10 fight animation, the fact that it remotely feels like it could be an actual video game is what I like about SLF the most. Most "video game" anime are just Isekai with stat-blocks. SLF also has many parts that would absolutely not work in video games (PVP is restricted so heavily, it feels like it should be outright banned and having only one group being able to fight a boss would certainly cause some high-level guilds to try to compete as to who can block a boss as long as possible), but it still feels like the mangaka has actually played video games rather using the setting to conveniently, and often poorly explain their plot (The only time we see someone do a ranged attack in SAO is Kirito throwing the stone in EP1, so there are basically only 3 classes: fighter, tank and murderer. Not to speak of the scene where the MC guilt-trips people into not using the respawning NPCs as meat shields, because that would be wrong, or the time someone rejected a low-level potion, because that would ruin his valiant death).
This quarter is nothing less than AMAZING. The entire Wethermon fight was not only stunning in terms of choreography, animation, and visuals, it was also SO multilayered, showing us the story behind it, the preparations necessary and how insane the magnitude of how strong these colossal bosses are, not to mention the sprinkles of lore and mystery on whats to come. Love it!
and it never lost the focus of being a boss fight too, they made it so it actually had interesting conditions and would looked like it would be fun and difficult to beat like a dark souls boss
When I first started watching SLF, my thought was "ah ... another VRMMO gaming anime. How many does that make even for this season?" And then the whole thing turned out to be completely off-the-rails - from him ignoring any of the typical "starting / tutorial" sequence to then winding up with a unique NPC friend (Emul is simply the best!) and the unique curse. Then the whole Rabbituza which ultimately culminated in Vysache blacksmithing scene (still one of the absolute best anime moments - as noted from last video). Then we get the MASTERPIECE of the full lead-up (NPC backstory) and the multiple-episode Weathermon fight. I have no idea if the original mangaka consulted any game creators, but the entire fight *felt* like a raid boss ... being done by far less than a raid's worth of players. The planning and tempo of the battle, and the *stages*??? Way back "in the day", I played World of Warcraft and this felt soooo much like trying to down a final raid boss - with the need to pay attention to the shifting tactics of each different attack and the stage shifts before it finally goes down. Mad props to the studio and animators for making this the amazing *chef's kiss* sequence it was. Add in some more wins for the voice actors and the voice director making it *feel* adrenaline-filled with a heightened level of tension. So much of this show needs to be packaged up as a presentation for future anime projects as "This is how you do it the right way". Started off silly and turned absolutely serious without losing that "silly" sentiment and all without it needing to be a "Death Game" of being trapped in there. They all still have real-world lives and the games are (as intended) a relaxing *escape* from those lives, not something they're fighting because they're forced to.
Hell yes! Thanks for the perfect coffee time video) hope you are having a fantastic day, man! FYI. The band that did both OPs for this series -FZMZ- is composed of various band members from different popular bands (from SIM, Survive Said The Prophet etc) with one thing in common - all are active and hard-core gamers. Quite poetic, ain't it?)))
I really wasn't expecting much from this show, no real danger just winning and losing at a game... but this show goes so hard and fantastic and hilariously. I can see a lot of my old interactions with many game guilds in it. Man, someone really put their soul in this show.
To be honest, I'm the kind of guy who doesn't really like fighting scenes in anime. Sure a beautifully choreographed fight and some badass attacks are always cool to watch, but it gets old very quickly and I often end up thinking "omg when will you stop fighting so the story progression can resume ?". But yeah this Weathermon fight is one of the very few exceptions (with other god tier stuff such as Frieren) when I could watch a fight which spanned over multiple episodes while being on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Both because of the awesome animation and visuals and also to the tidbits of lore and character development sprinkled here and there (and not forgetting the few jokes and silly moments which always hit the mark). So yeah great video, hyped for the last quarter. Take care man.
The Weathermon fight was just one of the most insane boss fights I've seen in any anime. It went on for like 4-5 episodes and never felt poorly paced... and not only did the animation never dip, but if you hadn't seen the rest of the series up to this point you would have sworn they saved budget for this fight... but the animation has been like this the entire series.
I'm not going to lie it took a bit for the new OP to catch on but catch on it did. I also like how Shangri-La setups that because the group is beaters they are more qualified to handle Tombguard than the average adventure while still showing it took their full effort to achieve what they have. Can't wait to see the conclusion get winned. Season 2 let's go!
Damn, I somehow missed your videos on this series even though I'm subscribed. I remember reading when this aired that for Episode 18, they brought on additional key animators for a full team of *24*, which is absurd.
That weathermon fight had so hype every Sunday morning! The climax of it had me standing up shouting cause it was just too epic. Really reminds you of fighting for your life in the last bit of an rpg or mmo boss after like 15 minutes of pure struggle.
I wont spoil the next segment, but i believe they fought it out of order, many games have hidden bosses with special system that requires something to alleviate it, like Ozma in FF9, if they had gone through the correct order, they would probably gain some buff or equipment to get immune to the level down debuff, making it a lot more manageable. I also believe sanraku unknowing activated a hidden quest, that is why he got so aggressive when he saw that pendant.
Still think danger danger is better than broken games when it comes to the opening. Especially love that pause in the second part that essentially treats wethermon unsheathing his sword as a beat of the song. Fuckin amazing, that
Man youtube must hate your channel. I haven't seen you pop up in a few months. I was talking to my brother and he had cinema wins on and it just clicked and i instantly came and started clicking and watching every video to make sure you were back in my algorithm even with the bell on. its the 3rd time you have just fell out of it.
The whole of that Weathermon fight Quest is what I think of as next level design for the in universe team. Let me ask you this...? How long was this game in both production and Beta testing? Because this type of thing has me thinking it was like 20 years or something ridiculous. How do you code so much and have it so bug free otherwise?
gotta check out this vid: "Eric Vale being Eric Vale in Shangri-La Frontier for 6 minutes" hes the eng voice of sunraku and in one scene he littlery says poggers, its great (spoilers if you havent seen all of shangri-la)
for UA-cam here big comment very very important so video very very important so UA-cam plays a lot :) if you don't know what to write but it is important for the performance of the video
How many Episodes do we need for this fight? [YES] ✅️ Yanno... 🤔 I am CERTAIN that a Solo Player would need to Mount and WEAR the Horse-mecha-suit vs Weathermon if anybody but these twinks were breaking the encounter...

This show never stopped surprising me and surpassing my expectations
The Wethermon battle is the single best example of how to do a multi-episode fight scene right that I have ever seen in anime.
When I first started watching SLF, my thought was "ah ... another VRMMO gaming anime. How many does that make even for this season?" quick tip to help this in the algorythm, put this on mute and on 0.25x and let it rip a few times. Should boost watchtime immensly.
Alot of Chinese fantasy novels have techniques based on using a sword to create a sky so I enjoyed the fact i could finally see it animated.
Good to know that this voice actor is in Trails through daybreak! I will look forward to hearing him once I get to that game... eventually 😂😅
