While we'd gotten by without a booster for several months traveling all over the East coast to Maine and back, it wasn't without issues. After testing the booster for the last few months, we now know it's something we should have had all along.
What is a booster?
A cellular booster is a fairly straight forward device. It simply takes the cellular signal from outside the RV (any major carrier), passes it through an amplifier, and rebroadcasts it inside the RV. It does this amplified rebroadcasting in both directions. The end result is a much stronger cell signal in both directions. There's a catch, though. A cellular booster only does all of this awesome boosting on a single channel, which means it can degrade your data performance as much as improve it depending on the situation.

I have a WeBoost Drive 4G-X connected to a Wilson Engineering Yagi style antenna on a telescopic mast (fiberglass painters pole) that lets me connect to a cell tower far far away and boost my signal from 1 bar LTE to 4 Bars LTE. I can't say enough about this system!

BE WARNED! We purchased the weBoost Drive 4G-x RV and had no noticeable improvement. I worked with tech support, here are the details; The install is correct to manufacture specs. Although improved data transfer is the goal, weBoost accurately states they can only effect signal strength, not data transfer. Also they stated that any signal weaker than -95dBm they could not commit to any improvement. -95dBm is considered good to fair strength, so if you have a poor/weak signal too bad. Also We did get an improvement on a -108dBm signal when (& only when) we placed our phone/device literally against/touching the inside antenna. Support was quick and kind. but useless. We returned the booster, no other options were given.
I believe you will find the higher up you mount the antenna the better it should work. So you may want to keep the 10' PVC or go even higher.
This is the first time I've heard someone talk about the single boosted channel vs multiple non boosted channels and how the booster can be detrimental to a normal cell signal.

It's definitely something everyone should know. We've run across several people in RV Parks who run a booster all the time. Same goes for non-boosting antennas. Many are not MIMO and can hinder performance in good coverage.
Yes... but even the db reading can be misleading if the tower's back-haul (it's internet connection) is saturated or not great to begin with. Think of a super strong wifi connection to a DSL modem ad 128Kbps. A speeedtest is the only real way to be sure. But, yes, the db reading in "field test mode" will at least give you the real signal strength to the tower.

I'm about ready to pull my hair out with this hotspot stuff. I'm in Foley, Alabama in an RV park with piss poor WiFi. I've got an ATT 5G phone, brand new with 40 gig of data and I'm constantly getting kicked off. I wish Tara could talk to my wife about traveling. We have been stuck in a park for two months now waiting for a home to be finished. I want to travel for about 3 weeks, then come back into the area for December and January waiting for closing. She's pitching a fit that she doesn't want to travel. If I had my way, I'd ship her to family in Atlanta, but she doesn't want to stay with them. I'm running out of options. I'm even thinking about selling my beloved Grand Design Reflection 31MB, buy a small TT and hit the road myself. Help.
Worst comps to deal with. If your unit goes bad after one day pass warranty they leave you hanging. Won't repair it only thing they suggest buying another unit. Bought a SureCall rv booster which works 1000% better. Not only you get boost on every band not like weboost which boost download signal. Do your research here on UA-cam. You be the judge.. and way much better support with SureCall booster.
We have a Weboost and have had really great success. For example we were in the valley of the PA Grand Canyon with zero cell service on the ground. Connected the Weboost and got 4G on the hotspot. Another example was in Ricketts Glen State Park in PA. Same situation and had 4G there as well. Met some new friends who asked to mooch off our hotspot. We have used the Weeboost for 6 trips now and really agree with you that it is a very useful tool in the techno toolbox. Happy campining!

Chad, Please pardon my “Techno Putziness “. We have been back from a killer motor home/ Jeep/ Harley vaca..... Until this crazy virus scenario. I struggled with my poor cell service and attempting to use my I phone Hot Spot to retrieve e mails. Also, we found out that AT&T Unlimited text, talk & data is NOT unlimited. At 16 G USE THEY SLOW US DOWN BIG TIME! Bummer. I wondered if u had any suggestions to use in our motorhome, truck, etc. Something possibly to be able to move from vehicle to vehicle???

We are going full time soon, and trying to get the best Hotspot/jetpack provider. I notice you use ATT? I saw the new nighthawk from ATT that shows crazy speeds... At times 115mps... But am told ATT has very bad coverage. Thus looking into Verizon Jetpack which seems to review better. Might you share your opinion. Thanks So Much!!
Coverage really depends on the region. It's been about 50/50 for us between Verizon and ATT, so it's good to have both if you can.. Always good to have options. However, it's not the technology that will be difficult, but the data plans. We're lucky in that we have grandfathered unlimited plans that are no longer available on both carriers. Right now, the only true unlimited hotspot plan you can get is the Verizon pre-paid plan. We rely on the MIA (changinglanesrv.com/mia/) to stay on top of things and jump on beneficial plan changes and such.

I lived in Maine for 5 years and in my opinion, lobster is way overrated. I lived a mile from where the lobstermen sold their catch and it became just another tourist trap. We used to buy lobster meat on sale at the grocery store. Years ago, they used to feed lobster to the prisoners and they got so sick of it, they went on a hunger strike to stop the lobster. Crab, dungeness, blue, etc. is my favorite.
Hello. I just bought the weboost reach. I also purchased the Pepwave 42G to install with the weboost antenna, with the purpose to get support of obtaining even the faintest signal to boost. Is this a dumb thing to do, or do you think it will work? Thanks very much for your help!
The biggest benefit to the booster is when you get the antenna as high as possible. So, I'm not super keen on using the 42G with a booster but it might help. Note that we have not used our booster once since installing our Pepwave router: ua-cam.com/video/yDCIx5JpEgs/v-deo.html

Hi great video but I have a question please. I'm planning on buying the new weboost reach for rv. I use my cell phone as the hotspot so if I set my cell phone next to the indoor weboost antenna in theory it should give a similar result to your set up right? We only use this to stream netflix and ect on tv and dont use laptops or work from the road. We dont upload at all. I'm trying to avoid the wifi ranger part to keep cost down. Hope yall are having a great Thanksgiving!
Yes... In your case the phone is your hot spot. So, the closer to the inside antenna the better. 👍🏼
Installed one a few weeks ago and got ZERO boost for T-mobile, was very disappointed because I wanted one for a long time. All lights were green, and we can get one bar without the booster.
Hmmmm. Double check all of your connections and make sure none of the center pins are bent. Also, it works best when the device (hotspot) is about 1-2 inches from the inside antenna.

Many areas, your cell phone will work fine. But good data throughput is the issue. This improves the "cell phone" quality coverage to "data hot spot" quality coverage. If that makes sense....

We stream all of our TV. Many rural locations have to OTA TV.

You have spoke on internet improvements quite a bit and actuality it has been very helpful, thank you. My business mostly relies on actual calls. Do you have any good tips for somebody that is trying to have cellular coverage and is not as concerned to much for the internet side of things? My service is an emergency service, we do not leave the state Florida that often, and Verizon is my carrier.

This booster will help with calls also. Just put the inside antenna in the same room you'll be making the calls.. 👍🏼 I think Florida is pretty well covered for both Verizon and ATT.
@@ChangingLanes Thanks for the info. I will check into it. I am not sure about AT&T, but Verizon does have pretty good coverage in Florida. But here lately I can be down as low as -65 dbm and with in the time of the call ( if I don't loss it ) -118 dbm. Especially at this time of the year when half of America migrates down here. The cell towers have to much traffic on them at the peak times.

I gotta remember this one. Plan to get a toy hauler soon & both my wife & I work from home so when on the road we'll need to RDC into work when needed. Big difference with that booster on. 10.7 isn't MUCH but it is enough for a couple remote desktop connections.
We only use the booster now and then.. Maybe 5-10% tops.

Very informative video. 1 question - what cell carrier / plan do you have? We only get a maximum of 15 Gig high speed internet on outr mobile hotspots until the service throttles back to less than 600k (Verizon unlimited plan - not really unlimited at all!) With this type of limitation, streaming video is out of the question.
We're lucky that we have old grandfathered (real) unlimited plans with both AT&T and Verizon since we burn through almost 1TB a month between the two. I think the only REAL unlimited plan right now is Verizon's prepaid hotspot plan. I stream youtube, hulu tv, netflix and others on my android phone and cast it onto the TV when we camp in our fifth wheel. In the worst scenario, do you think that 10Mbs on speedtest download would be enough to watch a program? I am trying to to determine if it would be worth buying this weboost booster, although I would probably buy the weBoost Connect RV 65 with the folding antenna mast.
Yes... 10Mbps should be plenty. I generally consider 5Mbps the cutoff for HD streaming. The RV 65 (amzn.to/2Rz2OXK) is a good unit.. just remember the antenna is directional and you'll have to point it to the cell tower. That said, directional antennas should perform better when pointed properly.
What park are you guys thinking about going to? We want to go there end of next year beginning of 2020.. how was is going through the small town and the bridges. We have a 36 ft Big horn 5th wheel. Thanks for letting us know.
Are you referring to the FL Keys? We stayed at Boyd's (this video's location), and Curry Hammock state park. Both are VERY nice, and curry hammock is only around $30/night. Boyd's is about $160! 😵 Navigating is easy.. no overpasses through the keys.

Great video. Love your channel. What are the advantages or disadvantages of using your Night Hawk over just using the hot spot on your phone.
We have the Unite Explore (the predecessor to the NightHawk), but the idea is the same. A standalone hotspot will usually have stronger radios and can connect to a directional MIMO antenna. You'll almost always get better throughput. Plus it's easy to tether over USB and you don't have to disconnect to make a call if you're on Verizon. We tether off our phones sometimes while driving, but it's not nearly as reliable as a dedicated hotspot. Just curious how does this work for your actual cell phone signals in the rv? We pretty much just use our cell hotspots for internet or streaming. Say if I wanted to just have faster download speeds to stream right on my phone. Does the inside antenna of the we boost need to be near the phone?
It does, but you will still want to be as close as possible to the inside antenna... maybe put the antenna centrally in the RV.
Hey, I'm sure you get questions about RV living often but I have some more nitty gritty ones, if you dont mind. I rely heavily on prescription medication, how would I get it if im in one city one week and a different one in the next? also what are the taxes like if you're constantly hopping states, like what if you're in florida then move to California? also I have to go to doctor appointments fairly often, how would that work if I'm always on the move?
I'm still in high school so maybe these questions will answer themselves as I get older, but im pretty sure this is how I want to live. Thanks!
Prescriptions can be transferred from state to state. Some controlled substances can be tricky. For instance, in NY they only take a physical paper script, but in FL they only do electronic. So it was a pain to have a physical script fedexed, but it was doable. Just takes some work to get things sorted out in each state. Doctors are a different story. We go back by home periodically for appointments and deal over email and phone the rest of the time. Of course, walk in clinics or ER for anything urgent. Taxes are no different. Our resident state is FL and will stay that way. Hopefully as technology advances, more and more doctors will take patients virtually.

I (chad) work in IT and have been with the same company (a bank) for 17 years and have telecommuted for the last 8 of those years. Tara does all of our editing, which is a full time job. Hey Chad and Tara! Looking for some insight based on your experience. We are in a seasonal spot in MI. Looking for mobil setups because the park wifi is decent during the week, but goes way downhill during weekend. As we are in one spot all the time, was leaning towards weBoost for setup (will go for Pepwave in couple years when we start moving). I've been checking out cell carriers in area we are in and am currently doing a "Test Drive" with T-Mobil. I talk to local store in advance of getting the free test drive and although i am close (1 mile) from a T-mobil tower, they said i am in the area of a known deadzone. I got the hotspot yesterday and am monitoring. I am getting around 1-1.5 mbs down and 1-1.5 up. Based on your experience in all the parks you have been to, and your equipment, is this enough base signal to even start to consider a weBoost or Poiynting antenna? Thanks!! Mark

What about your experience involving your Pepwave antenna - is this enough signal to start? There's still the possibility that the mere 10' elevated location of the weBoost could have been a significant factor in throughput vs. the MIMO antennae in your window. I would like to see how the MIMO antennae mounted on that pipe would perform to see if the $500 price tag of the cell "booster" is truly justified.
The directional MIMO antenna in this video is designed to be connected directly to the hotspot via short wires. They aren't the right length, nor gauge for roof or pole mounting. There are roof mounted MIMO antenna options out there. And, being on the roof would certainly help performance. There might even be some MIMO antenna options that can be mounted high on a pole, but this was not a review of every option and antenna available. NO, don't kill MIMO, then Dory won't have a sidekick to just keep swimming, hahaha.
One big thing to look at as well is jitter and ping time, especially with voice traffic. You could have great up/down speeds but jitter of 200ms will cause all kinds of problems with streaming video or delays when browsing where half the frames paint and the other half...well, just keep swimming. When I go full time i'm also looking to get a cradlepoint or Cisco mobile router with both AT&T and Verizon sim cards in it and configure it for best path including wireless. This way I keep swimming along and don't have to interact with my network. I already interact with enough networking all day and don't need my rig requiring it as well.
I saw one other youtuber attach the MIMO antenna to his rig's TV antenna, he uses an app to aim in the best direction for the best signal strength. He was getting a bar or two where he otherwise had nothing.
Oh, one more thing, don't touch antennas when they are live, especially the higher frequency antennas, this is bad for your skin. Turn them off then handle them. This is why the carriers never had fresh paint on the masts since all radars and communications had to be shutdown to go on the upper decks of the island or those poor deck apes would've been cooked.
I actually cut out a whole section where I talked about ping time and latency. Goes over 99% of most peoples' heads and I wanted to make this as simple as possible to understand. Also cut out the part where I went into field test mode and talked about raw signal strength. Throughput is the most commonly used measurement and arguably the most important. If the throughput isn't there, .5ms latency just doesn't matter, whereas most streaming apps buffer enough to mitigate latency and jitter if you've got the throughput. Was just trying to keep it simple.. 😊 It does get me on video conf calls sometimes though.
I also want to upgrade to an integrated solution like cradlepoint... But this setup is working so well, and I only have 100 projects on my plate. LOL

When I talked to my boss about going full time he said i'm talking to you at the beach in my RV so as long as you have interwebs you could be in orbit for all I care. Challenge accepted!

Do you have a video or blog comparing the prices between how much it would be to have satellite tv vs hotspots? I would like to see how much you two are saving by not having satellite tv bill, over the prices of paying for hotspot internet. I remembered in another video that you said you were paying for AT&T and Verizon unlimited data hotspots. How much are those a month?
you have to remember they need internet for more than TV so its not either or .... I have just gone from "land based" internet to "mobile hotspots" and am paying about the same - you can get verizon unlimited for $65 month
We have no idea how much satellite runs since we don't have it. We pay about $45/mo for verizon and I think $20/mo for ATT (hotspot on our existing unlimited data plan).. then we also pay about $40/mo for DirecTVNOW, some for Hulu, NetFlix, etc. Both of our plans are grandfathered unlimited plans and no longer available. Thing is, we need unlimited internet for work regardless, so it's hard to compare apples to apples. Verizon has a prepaid unlimited plan I think, but ATT has nothing. If we were to be forced into today's plans, we'd likely get Dish or something for TV. Right now, we just don't need it.
What does chad do in IT? I work as a DevOps engineer but I’m considering some sort of remote job so we can one day do the same. My wife would do telecommute nursing.
I do mostly systems tools development for internal systems management at a large bank. We've met a few traveling nurses on the road.. Usually a great gig as it pays very well and pays for every move.

We have this unit and now it works. What I mean by that is We had Sprint and after many calls to sprint with no satisfaction I called WeBoost. Come to find out from them that the frequency that Sprint uses can not be boosted :(. So to solve this problem I have now switched my service to Verizon.
Well that's a bummer... Verizon is better anyway. We carry them and AT&T and are very well covered with the two big players. Did you get their new unlimited pre-paid plan?

If testing without the booster shows less than 10Mbps download or 5Mbps upload, I will set up the booster and see if it helps. In a lot of places I'll set up and see 50Mbps and know right away that a booster will cut that in half. Sometimes it's not right away also... We'll set up and have decent speeds that degrade with weather so I'll set it up and try the booster. It's not an exact science, but more trial and error...

Can the weboost signal be password protected or can the signal be accessed by your close-by neighbors?
The repeated signal is only inside your RV.. In fact, for best results, put your hotspot a few inches away from the inside antenna.

Really good view and knowledge sharing. Weboost improves my signal in many areas. Also, two thumbs up for Techno RV - we have met Eric and Tami at several RV Shows - they are the nicest people and very knowledgeable of the products they sell.

hey Chad I wanted to ask you a question or just put you on to a topic I first discovered from a travel channel called advchina on YT. Interesting channel that goes into the culture of China and on one particular episode they talked about the reliability of chinese cell service. They talked about no matter where you are with a cell phone remote or otherwise you always seem to have cell service. You being an IT guy I thought you might find that interesting to learn about or might have some knowledge of why that is. Just seems weird that our service can be so spotty. Anyways I enjoy the content you guys put out its quite helpful for all of the rv noobs!
Interesting.. I did not know that about China. Will check out that channel.
I suspect that is because China is very population dense and techno. To support the population density and bandwidth appetite requires a lot of antennas, but range is secondary. Many areas of the US, distance of coverage is more important than bandwidth.

What about OTA TV signals/ antenna?
We have one of those too.. But when we can stream anything we want, the OTA is what we leave on for Daisy when we leave her home. We were very surprised how many HDTV channels we can OTA in some places. But I'd say about half the places we stay get about 3 channels, so sometimes Daisy is stuck watching soccer. 😊

Good question! I'm checking and will let you know...
From Eric (TechnoRV): Overall they both use the same 50db gain amp, so that is the main number. The only other difference is the gain at the antenna itself, and this is different per antenna and per frequency for each antenna. For example, the RV antenna may be like 4 db gain on a frequency and the OTR may be 3.5 db gain. I have looked at the numbers before and at the antenna they are very close, so close that i would not anticipate it making much difference. Both are good antennas, but the RV version has better brackets for RVs and comes with both AC and DC power while OTR kit only comes with DC power supply.

Navy service from 1971 to 75, HT 18 Pensacola Fl. Boot camp in Orlando, A school in Memphis. Rate ADJ. Hope to meet you all some day. Keep the videos coming. Navy teaches us to be anal about everything, don't they. Lol
Hi, Doug! We stayed at Boyds in Key West. It is suuuuuper expensive, but it was a big 50th celebration treat for us. And I think we booked it about 9 months ahead. Curry Hammock state park was VERY nice and much less expensive, but you have to book those 11 months out to the day (that's when they release them). And yes.. "attention to detail" was drilled in pretty good! LOL Thanks for following our adventures! 😊

thanks for sharing! id love a cell booster, but we spend most of our time travelling in the summer through the USA - but our cell phones are from Canada! we don't have any affordable unlimited wifi options! maybe when we full time!
Not sure what the terms are, but Verizon now offers a pre-paid hotspot unlimited plan. Might be worth checking out. Thanks for watching!
My Telus plan allows me to use phone & data in the US the same as if I was in Canada, but the same Gb limits apply. If you really use a lot of data watching TV, Netflix and UA-cam, you might look at one of the Direct TV plans for your US usage, as well as the Verizon hotspot. Good luck!

@Yar Nunya exactly what we were considering but i wasn't sure how well the cell phone would work to hotspot - or if the speed would improve using the booster with the SIM installed into it.
