  • The North American traveling exhibition, The First Kings of Europe, is an unprecedented exhibition about the rise of leadership and social inequality in the prehistoric Balkans and adjacent regions. The exhibition and the associated books, which are being published by the Cotsen Institute of Archaeology at UCLA, explore how the Neolithic farming villages of southeastern Europe led to some of the earliest tribal kingdoms in the Iron Age. The book and exhibition, currently on display at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York, are the result of a multi-year, intensive, collaboration between the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and twenty-six museums from eleven European countries.
