    Speaking as someone who has owned two981Caymans also Boxster and Boxster S
    and now own a 991.1 Carrera I can tell you the drive is quite similar even though the 911 is rear engine.
    But no doubt the 911 is quicker feels more sturdy and more a quality car that gives you more of that feeling of driving something special and unattainable for many.
    In short if you want a iconic car that you feel special in get a 911 🙂

    Try a 991.2. The turbos give the low-end torque. Also, I think they fixed the baby seat issue.

      Interesting! I’d love to test the PDK .2 as just couldn’t really enjoy the manual in this, I mean it was by no means bad but somehow the car suited being an auto.

      I had to spec the stupid stop watch in order to get sports + .... The stupid stop watch itself is even worse on the modern Porsches as they have moved it from in the dash to ON TOP OF the dash. Unbelievable. Looking to see if I cant buy the "non-chrono option dash piece" and then hide that stop watch under the dash piece without disconnecting it so that sports + will still work and the car wont throw up codes. Pretty much an eyesore on the dash as it is....and its right in line of sight. Car is pretty fabulous aside from this annoyance.

    Good and interesting alternative view of a 911. Bit of an odd opening though. It’s a sports car. A 2+2. Not a family saloon. I thought one of the best known facts about the back seats is … it’s kids only, unless you’ve a five minute emergency trip to make.
    I had a 991.1 (also a 2012 model), which I had after a 2009 Cayman S. Loved them both, and in the real world the Cayman is just as quick. However, the extra space in the 911, the grip out of corners … and yes the sheer prestige means I’ve ordered a new 992 Carrera S. The 992 does make the Cayman interior look a little dated these days.
    Did you actually say … “Porsche has not done well?” :-)

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  2 роки тому

      Yeah Porsche hasn’t done well in terms of selling the 911 dream to me. By no means a bad car. Maybe I was expecting too much. With the back seat, I get it’s not for adults really but hoped it was more accommodating for child seats, isofix ect. There are ways round it and I did eventually get the seat in. Somebody pointed out once they can fit in a booster it’s more than ok which I don’t doubt. Front boot and general space inside was lovely and the cabin a lot more up to date. Love the way the cayman drives, I think that’s the biggest problem, caymans drive unbelievably well for the price point it’s hard not to find flaws in other cars. Glad you liked the different perspective on the 911👍

      @@JoeTalksCars Starting your own channel is a lot of work. Keep it up!
      You are right. The Cayman is a tough act to follow, and it gets better with the 718. It was a close thing between a Spyder and a 992 for me. And not every element of a car that appeals is quantifiable. Sometimes it just feels right and has that sense of occasion. The 992 has it for me.

    Great video, Joe! One thing I am afraid of is that the 911 will slowly grow on you once you return it back... now it is like: meh, mixed feelings; in 2 weeks it will be like: maybe it wasn't so bad and maybe I enjoyed that and that; in 2 months: ok, it is time, I gotta have it.
    At least this is what happened to me 🙈

    I think the sound you're hearing is the sound symposer piping in intake noise. When I first heard it, I thought it was the exhaust. That car doesn't have a PSE button so can't have factory fitted sport exhaust. The quad tips could've been an option. If your certain it has sport exhaust, PSE might have been added after the sale and never coded to a button. Not sure...

    The Cayman is a sports car with its own identity and unique driving characteristics to the 911 so when people use the term upgrade to a 911 , they can be missing the point. The Cayman has a superior sports car setup with two seats and midship engine whilst the 911 is a sports coupe with four seats, albeit impractical and a rear more potent engine. If you see a sports car from the prism of speed then 911 is an upgrade but if you want drivability then you should be looking at Cayman R, GTS, GT4 or GT4RS.
    Personally I prefer a sports car with two seats and mid-engine, speed is the least important as I live in a 20mph London riddle with potholes, speed cameras and patrolling police officers so my base 987.2 is very competent and fast for normal driving. Rev it out the base Cayman goes mental and can keep up with most modern cars. Nice review, I am hardly surprised with your conclusion.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  2 роки тому

      So glad you are on the same page with regards to the 911 being an upgrade. Been getting a bashing on the comments but the Cayman is a better car full stop. The 911 just has the prestige and size on its side. I’d love a 911 still but just not a manual 991.1.

  • @MadelnMachines
    @MadelnMachines 2 роки тому +5

    The stopwatch is part of the sports chrono package so it's not just the stopwatch that you're getting. It gives you things like launch control (for the PDK), Sports Plus mode, Faster shifting (PDK), throttle response, and dynamic engine mounts. It's only really worth it if you're getting a PDK but that's why it's considered an attractive option. It makes your PDK Porsche more sporty. I was thinking the 911 might be good for my dog car seat but after seeing one there's not a chance it will fit. Isn't the clutch too long and heavy in all Porsches as well as the long gearing? I found the 981 was pretty boring and slow at low revs. The 981 feels quite big too. I'd love to see you compare a 981 S to your car. You should do day - maybe a 718 too.

    • @JoeTalksCars

      This is only the second manual one I’ve driven so not sure but it’s probably a characteristic. If it is what all the manual cars are like then I would 100% go PDK. Couldn’t live with the clutch at all. Ah that makes sense about the sport chrono! Seems worthwhile in a PDK.

      Nice couple of cars you have there!! I wish a sunroof option was there for a cayman. Shame it’s not. I guess the roof is far too curved but not sure why they don’t offer it as an option. The 4cyl turbo must be a totally different thing to drive, mines the 3.4 so it’s a big old lump and needs to be revved out more like a 911. I was so grateful to the garage for lending me this car as I never knew it wouldn’t be instant love and an urge to swap the cayman. I did enjoy the 911 but the cayman is just so much fun it’s hard to ignore.

      On a Boxster the sport mode probably makes more sense, a convertible is set up a lot softer than hard tops. They probably benefit from the firmer feeling. For this 911 on the roads tested it wasn’t ideal. Comfort mode and exhaust on was just perfect.

  • @flat6croc

    The PASM suspension in normal mode is softer than the non-PASM suspension. And PASM does not lower the car 30mm, it';s only 10mm. Also the wheels are not standard. They are the upgraded Carrera S wheels. And they are 20 inch all round, not 19 inch up front.

CS and when I feel relaxed and want to enjoy a powerful ride that is comfortable I take out the 997.2 4S. Try driving a 997 they are smaller. As to the lightness you feel in the front it’s characteristic of the 911. You really feel it when you are going fast and although a little unnerving you get used to it. I’ve only tracked the 911 since I’m scared my 99k cayman May not be able to handle the stress of the track. You can also tell the 911 is more solid, better built, and overall a more expensive car when you drive it. But man that cayman goads you into being bad. I already have paid the ticket for having fun wit it.

      @@JoeTalksCarsthanks for taking the time to review a car I may one day replace my base 997 with. I have to say I’m lucky enough to have my 997 just for me, as my wife doesn’t like the 911 one bit. She says it’s too noisy, and far too hard a ride for our old bones (61 years old) and she much prefers the ‘sofa like’ ride of our Rover 75. I have no problems with her opinions of my 911, and I agree the ride is very hard, which is one of the reasons I’m considering the later 991. Having watched your video, when the time comes, I will certainly be trying PASM and non PASM cars for comparison.
      I really like the car featured, especially in white, and luckily I won’t need to carry passengers, so rear seats aren’t an issue, or having to share with my wife, as she doesn’t drive my present car, or will drive it’s replacement.
      The dilemma for me will be can I justify the expense for the later car if it’s not much of an improvement over my 997. Oh, and I think I’d like to stay with a manual gearbox, even though my daily car is a VW DSG.

    Switching to a PDK version will solve your gear / high revs issue, because the PDK gearbox will instantly lower the gear and put you in high revs if you push the throttle to the floor. Especially in Sport or Sport Plus mode, because this will happen even faster and you will already be in lower gears than in normal mode.
    Then, switching to a 4 or a 4S will solve, I think, a big part, if not all of your front grip issue. The grip inside corners is phenomenal, it allows you quite a surprising speed in the them, especially because you can start reaccelerating quite strongly before their end. In the long curves, you can also accelerate throttle to the floor and it will stick to the road. Of course, you need to try this little by little and get a feeling of how the car behave and not be over optimistic. But you really need to do want it or to do a big mistake to make the car loose grip (such as arriving way too fast in a corner and breaking in the middle of it). But even then, in many cases (if what you did was not too foolish), the four wheel drive will save you, redistributing power between wheels.
    I never lost grip on the front, only on the back, and only 3 times in a bit more than 1 year of ownership. Each time, it lasted less than a half second. The car immediately corrected itself, probably sending most of the power to the front wheels (I guess). The 1st time was me arriving stupidly fast in a corner and breaking too late (never happened again). The 2nd time was me accelerating too strongly in the middle of a 90 degrees corner in a street. The third was me pushing the throttle to the max and turning a bit too strong to overtake at the same time. With many cars I guess this would have ended badly, but with my 911 (991.1 Carrera 4S), the slight drift was immediately corrected as if it was nothing important.
