First of all - big hello to all those save-scummers, who not only do the thing themselves, but also create guides, telling people that they "must do it to win". That's just lame. At this point, why not just unlock achievement instantly with some cheats? It would be faster, and with same result.
But anyway, title says it all. I finished the game without single death or reload. It's not perfect run by any merit, I use magic, take lots of damage and almost die several times. Almost ;) If you're aiming for no-death achievement, hope you can get something out of this vid.

I love this game. Everyone complains that the controls are clunky, it's too simplistic, etc., but I just can't stop coming back to it. It's a shining little jewel of gore, metal, & mayhem, & every time I beat it I stand & salute the devs.
    Oh, & nice playthrough, brother.

I'll be honest, I think controls are quite alright - played lots of platformers and this particular one gives enough control, plus you can see far enough to not be unfairly killed and you don't fall down by having just half of the character over the edge, like some other - worse - games do sometimes. About game being simple - well, platformer doesn't have to be too complicated to be good, blocking mechanic alone makes this one more complex than many of it's kind.
So, I don't think those critiques some people have are very well based :)

Not many know that, but in the early versions of the game, back when it was called
"Slain: The 7 Towers" - they had some really good, professionally done inter-level screens.
Why was it replaced with that abhorrent grey mess, with a white illegible font to boot - beats me.
That was one weird ass design decision. Although, not as weird as the ridiculously cringy
dialogue - that turns epic into hilarious, due to the piss-poor English. And that little detail
plagues the game far more than Lord Vroll could ever dream of...
Also those versions had some other cool ideas, which were later scrapped: you had vampire
acolytes instead of those boring flying heads, and you could decapitate enemies with a
special sword attack. (unfortunately, back then they didn't have a single guitar solo either)
I guess, not all things are meant to be perfect :-)

    • @Tineard
      @Tineard  3 роки тому +2

As usual with any big projects, there is just not always enough of money or time to do everything that was planned. I assume that was the only reason to not implement all of those things you mentioned.
About cringy dialogue though, I'm pretty sure that was planned - game was made in a way to resemble some 80's shows and movies ridiculous plots. In same way like, for example, Kung Fury does. Those things are made to not be taken any seriously - and personally, I'm fine with that, in a way it's better than some dead serious fantasy worlds, that end up being unaware of their own rules.

@@Tineard As much as i would like to write off the odd twists in the decision-making
process to a reason as lofty as this one, - the evidence points to the contrary.
Slain is a small project, made by just 2-3 people, and in the process - the gameplay mechanics were altered several times. So we can, perhaps, attribute the omission of
      certain gameplay elements to that.
Also, having a deadline to deliver the final result - surely has imposed some limitations
regarding the content that was promised, but never realized: such as the 7th level.
The game only has 6, and if you walk all the way to the right in the hub area - you
will see something that looks like a possible entrance to a new level, the one that
was promised, but never saw the light of day... This IS reasonably understandable.
But i was talking about something else.
I was talking about the content that was already made, completed, perfected and
even implemented in the game. And then, all of the sudden replaced with something
not only inferior, but poorly designed as well. (that would be inter-level screen and the
      cooler enemies)
As for the dialogue - this is more tricky than you think, and some light detective
work is needed in order to dot the i's and cross the t's on this one. It is cringy not
because of the content - but mostly because of the way it's written. For starters,
there are several key syntax mistakes, indicative of cases when the text is written
by a non-native English speaker. By not really a beginner, but not quite an intermediate
either. Alien syntax just screams that. A dead giveaway. Then, there is an abundant
overuse of words which were blatantly googled in an online dictionary, - without understanding what they mean exactly, let alone the right context for their proper use. Another clear indication of English sentence construction based on a foreign language.
What comes out - is a clumsy mess filled with meaningless words that are put there
for the sole reason of "maybe sounding epic". I can see right through this, because
many years ago, i made the same mistakes while studying...and there is always
      more to learn.
English needs to be mastered as English, before one can write stuff which would
sound either comedic (Craig Shaw Gardner), or serious (Edgar Rice Burroughs,
Thomas Mayne Reid), or picturesque (Howard Phillips Lovecraft) or stylish
(J.R.R. Tolkien). Slain's dialogue, however, - is written by an alien robot that is
trying to pass for a human. (or just by a very poor student...secondary school...??)
And that's the problem. It is not by design - it is by the lack of language skills,
unfortunately. And while we could, theoretically, ignore it - focusing on the amazing
artwork instead, but the damn text pops up way too often to overlook...
English is a beautiful and powerful language, beyond capable of catering to any
scenario - with detail, drama, witticism, humor and/or panache...
I am by no means an expert, but i actually wrote to the game's designer: stating that
i volunteer to fix all the dialogue in Slain - completely of my own accord, non-profit -
(and willing to work hard) just cause i love the game. But, there was no response.
Ego issues, i guess. In the end - we have what we have, and i am grateful for that,
and even more so for the sequel...

    • @Tineard

@@HexenStar I will be honest, I gave up on checking up people's way of writing a long time ago - it's the internet, we have entire world writing in English, including myself - and I'm not exactly proficient either.
What i ended up doing is glancing on whole sentences trying to quickly get the meaning of it and move on, actually the same for my own language as well - it's simply faster, but there is no time for nuances or soaking things up.
With that said, I truly respect your passion, which can be clearly seen from how many examples you provided - and it's a real shame that developers of this game ignored you. Wish I had my own fans like you who'd proofread all my poorly made descriptions and correct them into something decent ^^
As for graphics - at this point I can only guess, but who knows, maybe they had some sort of disagreement with an artist who made certain parts of the game, with copyrights or whatever else. But maybe it was something like Anthem? Like, they showed something as if it was made but it wasn't?
Either way, at this point it doesn't really matter why, nothing will be changed anyway and I can only make guesses. But yes, indeed, that was an interesting fact, thank you for writing about it :)

32:40 does anyone know how to open the door that's to the right of that elevator where the skeleton chases you with a spike wall? I went in, died and then it closed. Do I need to restart the whole level and not die for it to open? Is that the requirement?

    • @Tineard
      @Tineard  3 роки тому

no, only restarting whole thing. but it shouldn't be a problem, if you aiming for all achievements, normally you better do at least 3 runs for different challenges. And if you don't, medallion doesn't really matter :)

The thing is, savescumming is in order to get the no-deaths, no-mana and no-boss-damage trophies/achievements in one go.
For instance, you depend too much on mana, it's easier that way.
I'm not saying it isn't possible to do a legit no-deaths, no-mana run, but it certainly requires an experienced player, and most trophy/achievement hunters are not really eager to become "gud".
But yeah, it's a cheap way.

    • @Tineard
      @Tineard  4 роки тому +11

Well, then those "hunters" have problems with logical thinking.
If you're ok with just cheating through anything difficult, then your entire trophey collection is a lie. To both yourself and everyone around. Do I need to explain why lying is bad in long-term? I'd think it's obvious.
And then question stands, why even bother? What those achievements actually do? Boost your ego by 5% or something? Because on Steam, they don't do anything that matters. So achievements are there just for you to have an interesting challenge or to know your limits. For example, as I write thig I still have few things not done in Super Meat Boy - for years now. someday I'll return to it - maybe. If I have time. And clearly, I could cheat somehow, I'm sure of it. But why? Not having those achievements doesn't hurt in any way.
So yeah. Cheating to get achievement isn't just "cheap", it's "wrong" - just like lying. I can understand cheating for training or for exploration purposes in some games - but not for this.
