      How cool! I'm currently looking at a full Bradbury Treadle machine. I live between Oldham and Bolton, so it's local history to me.

      @@CurioByBSpokeDesigns ok great be good to see. Quite a history with the company tbh. They was near Alexandra park in Oldham but then went on to make belt driven motorbikes and prams. They first attended the worlds fair exhibitions from about 1870’s / 80’s ish and Manchester museum has got their sewing trophies

    Do you know how to check production date of my Rast & Gasser sewing machine (based on serial number)? I was inspired by your restoration video and now I want to try doing it myself. Greetings from Silesia

      Unfortunately I can't find any serial number records for your machine. I have not seen a Rast and Gasser machine yet!

    Thanks for the video, If the finish is shellac, why not just blend another coat of fresh shellac onto the old coat ?

    • @CurioByBSpokeDesigns
      @CurioByBSpokeDesigns  Рік тому +1

      That can be done, if the shellac is damaged. Unfortunately, shellac is not readily available here. If the shellac is good, this is easier.

    I'd really rather you didn't.
    A vintage sewing machine has a very differerent surface finish than a car.
    The car has a rather thick, uniform paint coat.
    A vintage sewing machine has a very robust black japanning (no problem polishing that all day long), but above that, there are extremely delicate decals, protectected by a shellac clearcoat.
    Shellac is water soluble.
    So using a water-based polishing compound, which works perfectly fine on cars, will first dissolve the shellac protection, then very quickly ruin the decals.
    Instead, you should remove all grime and dirt with petroleum, it will not dissolve the shellac. Once the surface is clean, you can then use a water-free waxing product for the shine.

    • @CurioByBSpokeDesigns
      @CurioByBSpokeDesigns  Рік тому +9

      This is a solvent based polymer wax polish. It will not harm the shellac. Shellac is not water soluble and needs methylated spirits or denatured alcohol to soften it. Water is not good for vintage sewing machines as it can work its way under the shellac and destroy the decals.
