Apparently some pedants here are getting annoyed 'you didn't mention the riots/looting, WAHHH', so here's my brief response.
    1. If you've been paying attention, that has faded quickly in the weekend and any property destruction was pretty targeted. As I said, the majority of protests around the world have been non-violent, and mostly have only turned violent when assailed by the police firing first with chemical agents (which tear gas is) OR right-wing extremists under the guise of antifascists (which has been proved by the FBI of all people, known to be sympathetic to left-wing causes and all that).
1b. When there has been agitation and looting outside of that, the movement on the ground has actively worked to suppress it, not egg it on. Nobody is looking to destroy small businesses in their own community, and when that destruction has happened, it's been linked to outside agitators or those right-wing extremist types looking to perpetuate chaos.
    2. The 'protests/riots' narrative also fails to discount the documented videos of police (both undercover and otherwise) destroying property AND looting (and then lying vociferously about it), so if we're looking to make general statements surrounding 'violence discredits the movements', the state-sponsored violence should factor into your logic if you're being 'intellectually honest'.
    3. The vast majority of corporate and police property is insured and again, if your issue of 'looting/riots' is pushed to discredit an organized movement surrounding police brutality and the lives of black people, I'm gonna look at you funny.
    4. Even if the riots were unprovoked and vastly more destructive, the larger and disproportionate violent crackdown upon peaceful protestors and journalists pretty much blows right past that, which has led to more deaths of black men (RIP David McAtee).
All of this evidence is well-documented SHOULD you choose to look.

      @mikerivera373 4 роки тому +34

I think the best quote I’ve seen surrounding that situation is that if your response is “it’s a shame that a black man was murdered by the police, but the destruction of property has to stop” instead of “it’s a shame that property is being destroyed, but the murdering of black men by police has to stop,” then you are part of the problem and you need to re-examine your priorities

@@mikerivera373 What I also like is how the coward President and his administration likes to bring up property damage narratives instead of actual protests happening in Los Angeles and New York right now.
I don't like property damage either but majority of them are taking advantage of the chaos in order to do so and are taking away from the actual purpose of the protest. Furthermore, the undercover police is true and is well documented, but media refuses to report that.
We should not believe this narrative as it's used to try to slience our voices from being heard.

    • @justezek8596
      @justezek8596 4 роки тому +9

To add insult to injury, the administration then want to gaslight the audience into believing that protestors are killing police officers?! WHAT?!
Where is there evidence? Surely, it adds that instigators are great at covering up their actions than taking accountably because they cannot prove that protestors are the ones doing it.

I should also note that plenty of other people have died also, including a retired black cop that was trying to stop a rioter/looter, only to get shot dead in cold blood and have his dead body streamed on Facebook Live and then spread onto Twitter (R.I.P. David Dorn), which honestly only furthers the point on how we need to care for other black lives a lot better than we actually have during this period of time. Also, some people being arrested for no particular reason at all either due to ignorance regarding certain situations or because of a implicit (or explicit) lack of care or understanding from where a protester was coming from, which also makes things worse for everyone going forward because if they don't understand or even care now... when will they?

His rant on the “misogyny” of Lucid Dreams) my views are much more in line with someone like Urinatingtree than Mark or Fantano (Love all 3 of those channels though)

Then Post Malone and 21 Savage in 2017-2018.

@Shock System And even then, Lil Baby isn't *that* good. Hell, I can only barely tolerate the fact that he's somehow stuck around despite having a name that should have excommunicated him from the rap game back when he first came up! At least DaBaby can try with his style to make up for his rap name, and even he's starting to lose credibility lately! And as for Gunna... I legitimately have no idea why people gravitate towards him at all. I mean, even with some of the worst artists/people that we've seen, I could kind of understand why they got interest, at the very least. With Gunna... it's just... nothing. Nothing I could truly tell at all. He honestly should have the same exposure level of someone like Nav - that is to say minor at best, not album bomb level like this shit.

There’s this good quote from Stereogum’s Tom Breihan on the Hot 100 not being as reflective as you think it is on what’s happening in America, “If you try to look at the pop charts as any kind of barometer for the national climate, you will drive yourself insane. Consider this: The week after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey” shot to #1. Now: Were people attempting to mourn King by listening to to this guy’s drippy, maudlin, pervadingly assholish song about a dead woman? During hectic times, were people trying to soothe themselves with a sentimental ballad? Or were people simply not thinking about what was happening in the world when they were making their pop-music-related decisions? Who can know?”

Thanks for speaking on this issue. The underlying theme of this recent wave of protests has been questioning the validity of institutions perceived as natural, necessary, and persistently correct and reliable. So it's important to apply that same critical thinking to the field of media and entertainment, another arena where black people have continuously been devalued while seeing their work profiting others. It's especially significant coming from someone like you who's dedicated to observing Billboard, which has a sort of monopoly on what qualifies as a hit song. Highlighting the injustices enabled or enacted by the establishment you cover might not be the most extreme or directly effective gesture possible, but it's still important and shouldn't go without applauding. Truthfully I can't say I'm disgusted with the responses by law enforcement and the executive administration regarding this current situation. I mean I'm seeing wonderful images of police joining protesters in their marches because at the end of the day the police officers in question new exactly what they were doing (seriously it's been funny listening to Joe rogan tear these cops a new one in that you would have to be brain dead to think it's a good idea to put your whole weight on a person's neck. You won't find that in any judo or taekwondo class.) Beyond that I'm really frustrated at the constant rush by both spectrums of the media to portray the looters and rioters as more politically aligned in one direction. They're certainly a mixed bag of radical left and radical right and that's plain and simple. I feel most badly for the small businesses that were already hurting and I think the fact the riots spread from more than just Minnesota but rather to the rest of the country to be frustrating. For example I live in Nebraska and we've had multiple businesses burnt down. This isn't a racist state. We have one of the more diverse subsets of middle easterns and first generation Mexican immigrants of relatively anywhere. We are as accepting as can be expected of sane people (obviously some people are insane). What I will say is destruction like this is not healthy for anyone and I'm just not convinced the original incident had anything to do with race. Those cops are somewhere between extremely moronic and twisted. They didn't think like a sane group of persons in any way. And as far as I can tell they are being brought to trial in a reasonable manner. I wish the best for everyone and I just want people to not be murdered for no reason like this poor man. And I certainly appreciate the commentary regarding the hot 100 although I'm not sure racism really pertained to Lil nas X it certainly was prevalent for the better part of 4 decades. I wish the best for everyone and absolutely black lives matter.

And as for Gunna I seriously don’t understand his appeal he’s literally the weakest in the trap genre. Literally every song he puts out is the same generic garbage that his contemporaries can do WAY better

That's only because the last one I remember was a national holiday. Still feels gross especially given they are a subset of the music industry and feel complict in their unfair treatment towards black artists, a conversation going on for decades even centuries.
And I can go on, but sufficient to say, I hate Bieber being on the charts now then ever especially when he is a prime example of the music industry allowing a white artist to pivot towards urban sounds to make a hit, along with regressive attitudes surrounding women. Yeah bad song indeed, hell that had to sour on me with every consecutive listen. Definitely one of the worst songs from 2020.

Be safe out there everyone. The world is becoming a scary place right now.
Next Week Predictions: Maybe an album bomb from Lady Gaga and or Lil Yachty. I know there's going to be a few protest anthems like Alright by Kendrick Lamar, F The Police by N.W.A, maybe Riot by XXXTention, Freedom by Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar, Changes by 2Pac, and maybe something from Run The Jewels next week. I hope Run The Jewels chart, they really do deserve it. Also, expect the Savage Remix or ROCKSTAR to the new Number One.
Watermelon Sugar will probably break through the Top 40 (I seriously hope it does.). Also, G Herbo recently released the Deluxe edition of PTSD. So, here's hoping that the title track will come back on the charts and actually stay. It's a really great song.
Also, expect those new singles from the late Juice WRLD and Rosalia with Travis Scott to chart next week too.
Let me know if I forgot anything.

Okay, so ... I'm not an expert on this (that's one reason I watch these videos in the first place), but what exactly happened to "Someone You Loved"? Did it get pulled from circulation or something? It was holding on to the outer rims of the top 20 just last week, and it's not like it passed any important threshold this week (it would have been its 55th week on the Hot 100). Why is it gone so suddenly?

Billboard has a rule where if a song has lasted on the Hot 100 longer than a year (52 weeks) and falls below #25, it's dropped to the recurrent charts. SYL was on its 54th week on the chart and was #20 last week, so I'm guessing it had a big enough fall (6 spots or more) to drop from the Hot 100 entirely.
With that said, I was not expecting its exit out of the chart either given it was still #20 last week. I also didn't realize it'd been more than a year since it debuted...

Well, since chaos erupted in the US on top of a pandemic and an Anonymous comeback with an gigantic exposed that I'm surprised didn't cause more repercussion, this week felt oddly peaceful in the charts even with a Gunna album bomb.
Well,I agree with Mark,Rain On Me is a great song! It's just fun dance pop we really need rn.Even if I really loved Savage,ROM deserved to brine to the top in these troubled times.
So the TikTok debut this week is Ily...Meh I kinda don't have an opinion on it.It have a great vibe though.
SOMEONE YOU LOVED IS FINALLY GONE.YES.
With the radio cut on the calculations,I'm surprised Adore You didn't collapse since(even I absolutely LOVE this song) radio is kind of everything it has.Serioulsy,we managed to marginally close the radio-streaming breach with Don't Start Now I think we can do it with Adore You(although it probably won't happen).
So with the TikTok Trinity that debuted in the same week as the Bad Bunny album bomb almost reaching the top 20,that means we'll have Sunday Best coming for it in the few weeks.Joy.
Ok Imma address Break My Heart's uneven chart run so far, well,it's really big on streaming, but the big problem,is that it has faced a lot of competition to reach the Top 20 unlike it's sister song,Don't Start Now which it's only true threats were the Christmas songs that all die in early January and Harry Styles, meanwhile,BMH had Drake,DaBaby,Future and a lot of other album bombs.Yeah this paragraph is just a random thought.
And another random thought.SOMEHOW Take What You Want is actually in the YE projections even if it probably fall off. That's nice to know since that's easily the best song on Hollywood's Bleeding.
As peaceful this week is,next one will be more in-your-face active with the battle for the number one with Rockstar's giant streaming numbers and ROM's album boost (depending on how Chromatica picks up),Kendrick Lamar's comeback,This is America rising from it's ashes with help of a mashup of it with Congratulations which blew up on TikTok and the current situation(I'm still wondering how this won't return with TIA since Posty is considerably bigger than Gambino),Watermelon Sugar,Roses and In Your Eyes if it keeps it's remix momentum will continue to rise and RITMO going unnoticed and further locking it's YE spot.

I always respect people’s opinions but idk how well this coveys what’s rly going on. In times of crisis I hate the idea that everyone is more divided than brought together. The left in generally blaming everyone else and insinuating that America is a nation full of monsters, or the rights general ignorance to social issues and abrupt and often uncalled for standards when it comes to handling issues such as this. The idea that people with platforms try to attack others in situations like this, we should all be on the same fucking side. People spoke out so much against the current administration in 2016 and accused it everything in the book, yet it still won. So I believe that people need to shut the fuck up on social media and create the change they want to see. That’s why I have mad respect to mark for donating to bail funds and trying to learn more. Even if I don’t agree with all his points he is definitely educated on this subject. This is why I encourage everyone here and who ik irl to make informed opinions for themselves . Don’t just mindlessly post something because everyone else is doing it. Do your own research watch news sources on both sides of the political spectrum and make your decision based on that. This might actually lead to positive change, as maybe one day people my age (gen z) can have unique opinions not solely based on what other people tell them to think.

"Rain On Me" is the best song Ariana has either made or helped take to number 1. "Thank U Next" is meh, "7 Rings" (I just don't wanna talk about that song) and "Stuck With U" (probably a worst hit songs of the year list contender if it wasn't for charity), that said I do find Lady Gaga's move back to pop a little jarring after "A Star is Born" and "Joanne" but "Rain On Me" is pretty good, would be nice if the stans on Twitter calmed down a little (several of them got really pissy after Lady Gaga and Ariana Grade missed number one in Australia...it mostly missed number one because of streaming). Gunna joins the list of least appealing rappers to somehow have a career right now.
Next week: Who knows? Wasn't much on the new releases front that appeared to get people talking apart from Chromatica, dare say a few songs on the Bubbling Under chart might get onto the Hot 100

Well, time to listen to 11 Gunna songs from the album that finally broke Fantano. Also, good for Mark to support BLM and call out Trump, as well as systemic racism in the music industry.
ily: surf mesa is an appropriate name for this artist because the song sounds like a beach song. Unfortunately, some of the vocal mixing sounds as coarse and rough and irritating as sand. Still, a good summer song that I will not be listening to at the beach because I don't want to get sick. 7/10
FEIGNING: I get that the instrumental was trying to sound exotic but it just doesn't work and gives me a headache. Also, he is not definitely feigning the fact that he is people's favorite artist. 2/10
GIMMICK: Yes, it is a gimmick. And an a dated and overused one at that. 1/10
MOTW: Gunna, dropping bird shit on the charts since 2018. 3/10
NASTY GIRL / ON CAMERA: This answered my question about whether or not artists listen to their own music while having sex. The second half is better though and there's actually a stylistic reason for the two songs being together. 4/10
Daechwita: Good to see BTS getting some representation. This is one of the hardest hitting rap songs this week. Also, "that’s your reason for using drugs, cry me a river, you just got no skills" from the Genius English translation made me laugh considering he's going up against Gunna this week. 7/10
MET GALA: At least the chorus is somewhat coherent this time. 3/10
ARGENTINA: It's at least an interesting story, but his vocal delivery is awful. 4/10
Need It: Both verses are good and it was smart for them to share two verses instead of the song being 5 minutes long. Also, Migos has been really quiet this year besides Quavo's out-of-place verse on Intentions. 8/10
BLINDFOLD: I was wondering when Lil Baby would show up. Granted, the beat fits with the eerie lyrics. 5/10
WUNNA: Cooking drugs like Benihana is a unique reference, but not enough to save this song from being forgettable despite being the title track. 3/10
TOP FLOOR: I love how this song is trying to will itself into becoming Hot by Young Thug featuring Gunna and Travis Scott with the trumpets in the background. At least Travis' part is more interesting that almost everything else on the album. 4/10
COOLER THAN A BITCH: Gunna's parts are too long and Roddy's part is too short. Roddy is a breath of fresh air on this album and is the reason it's getting the best song of the album bomb. 5/10
DOLLAZ ON MY HEAD: Gunna really brings Young Thug down to his level. 3/10
Rain On Me: The lyrics are kind of basic, though I wasn't expecting much. I prefer Ariana's parts over Gaga's, but both are solid. Not one of my favorites from the album, but it's still good. 7/10
No ranking this week, considering it's mostly Gunna. Best of the week is Need It and worst of the week is GIMMICK.
Edit: I'm compiling and ranking a list of number one hits of the 2020s based on my 10-point scale. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QCxjOxOJNcBnYksJY_WD6Uj-O8x94PY7IsIZNuqON3g/

I must admit I would be interested in that, if only to hear his thoughts on that song in particular. Missed opportunity the last time it had traction due to the neat bait and switch there from Look At Me to that song in question.

I would say it’s between rockstar and savage next week and probably for a good part of the next month as well. Rockstar right now is the front runner for song of summer because it still has a lot of radio to gain. I see can top 40 jumping on this song. But maybe something else will still come out of the blue. Glad that someone you loved us off. But his new song before you go is even worst. Glad rain on you if number one. It’s better then most numbers 1 this year.
