Honestly I love how in game theres 3 areas for the music to change, , With it without Channel 1+2, with Channel 1, and with Channel 1+2 (As you get deeper into the level.
I've seen it before on the DS with NSMB's overworld theme but I didn't know that having multiple notes play on one channel was a thing since the N64. The only other instances of this I can recall from even farther back in time are Sonic 3's Launch Base Zone and Ristar's Ru-Di--Da! but those were pre-sampled instances for the PCMs, specifically for the drums. Also shoutouts to Channel 3 for barely being audible at all, genuinely didn't know there was a 4th instrument playing until this video.
Well, Channel 0 (or the electric piano) actually used 2 channels! It’s quite impressive that the N64 actually handled this, since it didn’t even have dedicated sound hardware, so all of the sounds used CPU, which combined with SM64s physics, collision, and other things for the CPU to Calculate, it’s quite impressive that it even runs Dire Dire Docks and that one other water level, since those places are quite taxing on OG hardware.
in game it uses a more subtle bass instrument but it isn't in any sm64 midi soundfont. the one in the video is a slap bass. edit: it's the "bass+lead" in the soundfont

Technically the PAL version would be too slow since the developers were using NTSC but I understand that you're just looking for what you remember as a kid. I grew up in North America and this doesn't sound any slower to me though
3 Issues with this video that i have noticed as an SM64 modder for music and what not, 1. The bass is completely off, this should've used HMC Lead, This is using slap bass, 2. The reverb isn't present in the N64 version, 3. The snare is wrong. but i wanna point out the differences in this video as its not completely accurate.
It's not and it's the soundfont's fault. It's supposed to be 'electric picked bass' but in it it's just the same as slap bass. The proper one *is* in the soundfont but is marked as 'bass+lead'

Also that "other water level" is Jolly Roger Bay.
The waveform is M-shaped. It used the Vanish Cap.
