The Secret History of the Internet

- In this prequel to the 'ICANN and the 7 Keys to the Internet' podcast, David talks Marques and Andrew through the wildly interesting history of the internet. There's plenty of information out there about the beginning of the World Wide Web in 1989, but what was happening before that? How did the internet start? How long did it take to turn on? And why does it always start with Sputnik? David answers all those questions and more while explaining how everything came to be. Special thanks to everyone that took the time to talk with us to make this episode. We hope you enjoy!

I'm very disappointed Vint Cerf's title at Google is not Internet Zaddy, so I registered that domain and pointed it at his Wikipedia page.
I won't link to it to avoid getting my comment removed again.
It works, 10/10 would recommend
you are a legend.

Just tried it. So sick
Good work!
This is now part of the Waveform Cinematic Universe
Into The Waveyverse ™️
Nice...I'm sure it would be an extended universe..
@@edwinujevwe long form*
David is the Nick Fury of the WCU. Phase 1 off to a great start.
In an alternate universe, Marques plays Jack in the hit movie Titanic
David is obscenely talented when it comes to researching/presenting these things. This and the ICANN episode are both fantastic.
I’d love to see him cover User Interfaces and the development of operating systems - especially the work by Douglas Engelbart and Xerox PARC.
yes, that would be the prequel to this and the prequel to that is: how chips get invented and the prequel to that is: how computing got invented
Absolutely!
@@autohmae inb4 David eventually pulls a Bill Wurtz and eventually covers the history of everything
Hiring the right people can be very difficult and marques has done an amazing job in that regard. Not only are the staff intelligent and talented but seem like genuinely good people too. That's hard to find.
Get Ivan Sutherland on the show!
Crazy that I was just thinking about the ICANN episode earlier today and then the prequel drops today?!? This story just keeps getting better and more interesting. Thanks for another absolutely incredible episode!
I think Ellis is the greatest addition to the podcast. He knows when to interject at the right moment with added knowledge.
I also love David's Deep Dive Episodes (TripleDDD) more than any other!
An hour and a half waveform podcast on the history of the internet all through the Cold War?
And it's Friday night and I'm working the warehouse alone? By the time I get this done, Linus should be live.
Thanks so much guys, this was a really fascinating documentary.
Lol. The second sentence is epic!
As a former Network engineer between 1997+. I worked at BBN Planet when the ARPANet (Internet) became commercialized. We had AS1 designation. Also worked at Cisco for 15. We used to pride ourself that Cisco equipment runs the backbone of the Internet. Great story telling. Great episode.
Cisco was the largest software manufacturer for decades. Because of ios running on their routers. Before iOS of course.
This is now my most favorite podcast of all time!! TY Marques for supporting/ backing all this research and everyone at Waveform for making it so easy to understand!💙💙💙💙💙
Yess I agree, love that they aren't afraid to do these kinds of episode too!! 🎉
i love this type of episodes would love to see it becoming a monthly thing
I just love David. He just is too much interested in this complicated stuff and explains them with such a breeeeezzzzeeee.
these are the BEST waveform eps. i'd listen to a whole separate podcast about this stuff
love these highly researched episodes on interesting topics. hopefully more soon!
I've noticed David does some really solid impressions.
I loved every second of this. David is amazing at researching such things, and both him and Ellis were so good at telling it
As someone who works in IT, this episode and the 7 keys episode are the best Waveform episodes available.
Now I’m craving a regularly scheduled docu-series about all things tech from the past, present, and future.
One of the most informative pieces I've ever listened to. Man, I'm surprised I haven't heard anything remotely close to this ever about the Internet. Wonderful job guys!
“some ppl think older ppl don’t know how to use the internet! I have news for you, we invented it”.
Crazy stuff, thanks guys!
"Welcome to David's Stomping Ground, absolute geeking out!"
More David episodes, more space tech tangents, and more deep dives into backstory of _____ !
I love that David is now the lead chair guy
I love these storytelling videos David is so good at it please do more of these
You guys should call these special episodes the Longform Podcast
I came over from Apple Podcasts just to say I really appreciate this video and this kind of content in general, it was really fun and I’d to see more like this, so thank you David in particular and everyone who made this episode possible!
A lot of this information I knew but I didn't know it tied together. Thanks.
It's super cool and very useful knowledge and history. Thanks David
A full David show... this is my JAM!
David: This one is a long time Coming
Us: Indeed
LMAO at least he acknowledged it immediately loll
Notice the spark in David’s eyes!!
I always get mesmerized whenever David is speaking
Not gonna lie, I LOVE episodes like this! So so sooooo informative and interesting! And I love seeing the responses on everyone when they learn something new! Awesome stuff as always guys!
What I think I enjoy most other than dialogue is the respectfulness toward each other.
I usually don’t listen to story time podcasts but David does it so well! It’s like I’m hanging out with you guys lol
Loved this! Awesome episode from start to finish. So much interesting information that we take for granted. Thank you for this!
The best podcast of the Intergalacticnet.
Love how you guys switched places... like switching packets.
Oh, thank goodness, I watched all your old podcasts at work, and now I crave more.
David just killed it on this one!! really love these long researched podcasts!
I could legit listen to David all day 😍😍
Oh my God this channel just leveled up and I appreciate it so much. Tech channels often skip out on the history that brought tech we take for granted in the 21st century. I appreciate it immensely. Access to information and history is valuable and whether people in the U.S. want to admit it or not our free access is being challenged and no android or iphone discussion is going to help us wake up and recognize that we take the ease of the internet for granted. Anyway, thanks for the awesome video!!!!
Can't believe you got to interview Vint Cerf for this. What a power move.
I was surprised they didn't when they did the DNS episode before, but now it makes sense, they already were in contact with him 🙂
David the 🐐
It's a Friday night and I never thought I would enjoy this podcast over a TV show or a movie! Amazing entertainment, keep bringing more of this
Marques & Andrew - Please feel free to ask more dumb questions when it gets too nerdy :)
Love y’all’s long form content!
No exaggeration... this episode and the 7 keys to the internet episode are the coolest information explained. Information I should know but didn't. Really love this type of content. Keep up the great work.
I remember when Marques said he wants to be the Neil de grasse Tyson of tech .....now it feels like the whole wvfrm channel is going to that direction 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻keep it up....
This channel is such a peaceful and safe place for me to rest on the weekend. Like hanging out with some homies 😂
Amazing episode, i only knew bits & pieces of this story but this really brought everything together for me. Looking forward to the next longform episode!
Great to see this icon here. 🙂Let me know if you have any Internet questions
This was a great episode! Very informative and it kept my interest the entire time. I’m going to watch the ICANN episode later.
So a slight point of correction:
Store and forwarding is still used in packet switching. The main idea of packet switching is like you said you divide the data stream into packets and sent it across the network and it arrives at the destination as different times and the client reconstructs it. However most of the time you don’t send the data directly to the destination rather you have to route it through multiple clients that store and forward the packets along. In this sense, packet switching is built upon store and forward. The key point is the fact that the data is chunked before sending it through the mesh networking.
The interplanetary intent reverts to a more rudimentary idea of store and forward. Because there is such a time delay and relatively limited routes between the client, you shouldn’t chunk your data in packets. Rather you send all data at once, it waits at a node often combing multiple nodes. The key point here is that the intermediate station holds and combines the data.
Im a computerized information systems major and this is SUPER interesting. Ive learned most of these in my networks classes, but I love the added facts.
Really like the fun editing on the pod.
This was so cool. Didn't notice the time passing. Thank you, and please make more of these.
i love these story time podcasts. soooo sick!
I’m really enjoying these episodes about history. This is like computer science history class
David is the WAVEFORM GOD. My boy is smart!
For this series Waveform remains forever GOATED. 🤞🏽
These episodes are incredible 🤯
More David explaining science/tech please!
“How much Reddit karma does he have?”
Not going to lie, that caught me off guard Andrew 😂
Feels like "reply all" is back. Keep doing these please
You should do this more often. This is so fun to watch and listen.
I absolutely love these episodes, and I make time and mental space to watch these. Not cleaning, not driving, not doing anything, but, just absorbing/soaking in all the info.
I love these videos where David goes ham on the research! Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for the work team...
This is the best waveform podcast so far. Entire "computer networking" course summary in one video. Thanks a lot MKBHD team
This was so fun to listen to but I noticed right away when he said www was started in ‘99 (that it was wrong) because I lived thru that era. I am 71 yo and have worked in the IT field since 1990. I am still working and support Healthcare EMR, Epic. Thank you for the great exciting Podcast!!!
David deep dives are THE BEST
This is one off my favorite episodes
Super awesome podcast, learned a ton. Thanks!
You guys have an amazing team now. This episode was fantastic.
David doing the Lord's work! Great job WVFRM. I was enthralled the entire cast!
David is a gifted storyteller.
Not just university's had advanced computer science. DeAnza College in Cupertino, CA had a computer lab that was frequented by Steve Wozniak. He had to vie for computer time with students in the Physics department. When I went in to do an assignment for homework, he was always in the middle of "working on simulations" so he just knocked out my homework in about 5-seconds to get my time. My contribution to computer science.
Love these long form episodes! Do more!
Please make more episodes in this format, It was very informing and fun
David is furiously taking notes for the 2035 episode on the birth of AI
I love these episodes they feel like early Reply All episodes. Keep it alive Waveform!!
David's putting up a trilogy for the internet hall of fame yeah? 🤝
You have no Idea how interesting this is for a IT student and I just gave my UNIX OS final exam - so I am glad I found this episode today - I would love to listen to more episodes like this
This is my favorite episode ever. Keep up the great work
I really wish this becomes a trend and you guys become the next "Reply All" podcast
Brilliant episode, also the best possible revision for my data communication exam tomorrow
Very engaging podcast couldn't turn away for a minute
I love that you do different kinds of stuff sometimes so that we get absolute gems like this episode 💎
David. David, David, David. Do you know what a heartwarming experience it is to listen to an adorable young man speak in such well researched detail about the history of...me? Of course not literally me, but the much maligned Boomer generation that succeeded so magnificently in tearing the world apart, so-so at reassembling it, and a total failure at changing the fundamental nature of it, as no generation can.
What that shift to a total Science based, parental approved dogma for the only serious pursuit of happiness available to our generation, came at at great cost to our personal development as any child of a Boomer will readily attest. Working class Boomers didn't have the luxury of being hippies, we just got high on the sidelines. Drugs were our drug.
That I would live to see the day that my life becomes your history lesson, and such a positive one at that. I am so grateful that your generation somewhat forgives me, and pretties up the story to boot! You are rockin' it. Thank you, David, from the bottom of my heart, as well has your co-hosts. You are all doing the young people's magic of making something out of nothing.
AMAZING I love this format! I learned sooo much and how david even interviewed this guy is incredible! Thank you guys!!! We need more of this!
Can't thank you enough, David... for the fucking great stories. too good !
Kudos to the entire team for backing him up too.
How come was the upload later than usual?
I absolutely love the details on the topic of the internet. Would love to understand more on models behind Dall.E and ChatGPT.
Love this kind of episode, great job on the research!
It's easy to take for granted that technological innovations can take a long time to overcome the early hurdles but then progress after that moves very quickly.
Very informative and entertaining.
Awesome episode! More like this🤟🤟🤟🤟
Amazing episode! Always love learning about the internet. Learned a lot about it in uni but this was was way more detailed and entertaining. Honestly I’m surprised there aren’t documentaries or movies about internet history yet.
Out of curiosity what did everyone do since it was released later in the day? How did it effect your schedule?
It’s released at this time a lot of the time
Edit: Not considering time zones
@@oliverwilson6904 No it's typically released around 8 sometimes 9 at the latest
@@charlesdamien5849 Yeah it's two hours later than normal
@@oliverwilson6904 not how time zones work 😬
I was sooo bored at work! I just listened to music and kept refreshing
These few episodes are basically storytime with David and Im all for it. An episode like this with others in the storytime seat would be great :D
I want more episodes like this because it's easier to relisten because it's less about the news
This was amazing! Thanks for the look into the internet’s secret history. 😊 it’s wonderful to have this on record and this subject is really exciting! Absolute awesomeness! It’s blowing my mind.
Great storytelling and honestly one of the best episode of 2023! Way to go team!
Pure gold! Those themes are super cool just keep them comin'
Kudos for maintaining my interest for over an hour online.
I am as amazed by David as David is amazed by Vint Cerf!! Huge thanks to David and the WVFRM team! Excellent content.
