  • Remaster of the self proclaimed "third most mysterious song on the internet", 'Illumination Night' (aka 'Light the Lanterns' or 'Legacy'), an unknown folk country song from the 80's that tells the story of the Grand Illumination at Martha's Vineyard.
Was believed to be "Legacy" by the folk duo group Hazlewood but was confirmed to not be this track.

    Lyrics:
She was born on a magic island,
    There's a certain mythology
I was already on the outside,
I wanted to be what I wanted to be
She took me to Illumination Night
    To pass on the legacy
    Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses,
Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors
    Celebrate the homecoming,
    Celebrate the moment when
The will to live collides with love
    Lights the lanterns, everyone,
And pray that the rain won't come
She left me with grace the next year
She went away, I don't know where
Grace got drunk in a Chinese restaurant
So all I saw were the lights extinguishing
I'm going back on Illumination Night
To see if I can light the lights
    Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses,
Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors
    Celebrate the homecoming,
    Celebrate the moment when
The will to live collides with love
    Lights the lanterns, everyone,
And pray that the rain won't come
    Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses,
Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors
    Celebrate the homecoming,
    Celebrate the moment when
The will to live collides with love
    Lights the lanterns, everyone,
And pray that the rain won't come

This is why we need a universal or world music library.
It’s a tragedy to not remember the past, it’s like missing a part of you that you can’t even describe.

I'm late to the party but discovered this song recently and just got into the Lostwave world. I really like the song and hope the artist gets her flowers sooner than later. To me it's about a woman who has a mother figure or mentor ("she took me to Illumination Night to pass on the legacy") and she realizes she's (pardon my language) fucking her life up and being a disappointment ("she went away I don't know where / Grace got drunk in a Chinese restaurant / so all I saw were the lights extinguishing") and wants to better herself ("going back on Illumination Night to see if I could light the lights"). I may be wrong though!
As far as the possibilies on the singer I think the Signe Toly theory is not likely.. Anyone who has heard her on "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" and even videos when she was older knows she has a very jazzy voice compared to the (lack of a better term) plain voice here. Someone compared the singer here to a female Michael Stipe from REM and I think that's a very accurate comment!

Something about this song is just so nice. I had found a lead a while back, but a user on a discord had contacted the woman who I thought it was, to no luck. It would be amazing if someone like Whang! or blameitonjorge covered this song, but for right now it looks like we’re on our own. For now though, do we know if anyone has contacted Windows to Sky about more info on this song? They are the ones that found the cassette. Why not ask them where they found it? When? If there was any special events going on where they found it because the cassette says “listen today” and sings about our main singer and a woman named Grace. There’s a few more things I have in mind about this song, just waiting for a good time to bring them up.

the search for this song unfortunately kinda died, windows to sky does not want anything to do with it and a lot of people gave up. I think it was a demo that was never released, by some upcoming folk group that never made it. It hurts my heart that this beautiful piece remains unidentified, it's such a great tune and I love the little story it tells.

But I eventually got to a dead end, as described in my Part 5 because I am not in West Coast USA (around SF) which is where the answer lies ... in the memories of players from 1965-1975. If you seriously want to solve this mystery, by all means carry on from where I left off. But you'll have to do on the ground work, not just superficial internet searches. The writer, singer, players of this song must be in their 70s or 80s now or else dead. This song was way before the internet, so don't be surprised why google turns up nothing relevant beyond what I've already figured out from the lyrics.

    interpretation and lyrics i guess:
int: part of me feels like this song could be about the singer reminiscing about her girlfriend/wife, who is living in another country. unable to travel to each other’s countries due to war or sickness. only to reunite and get married at last
    lyr:
    [verse 1]
she was born on a magic island, there’s/bears a certain mythology.
i was already on the outside. i wanted to be what i wanted to be!
she took me to an illumination night, to pass on the legacyyy!
    [prechorus]
    ancient/crazy ladies in gingerbread houses.
light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors!
    celebrate them for coming!
    celebrate the moment then..
    [chorus]
    my will to live!
    lights of love!
    light the lanterns! every one!
and pray.. the rain won’t come..
    [verse 2]
she left me with grace, the next year.
she went away, i don’t know where!
dazed and drunk at a chinese restaurant.
so all i saw were the lights extinguishing!
    going back on illumination night…
i see her by the lifeless lights.
    [prechorus]
    ancient/crazy ladies in gingerbread houses.
light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors!
    celebrate the homecoming!
    celebrate the moment then..
    [chorus]
    my will to live!
    lights of love!
    light the lanterns! every one!
and pray.. the rain won’t come..
    [final prechorus]
    ancient/crazy ladies in gingerbread houses.
light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors!
    celebrate me for coming!
    celebrate the moment when..
    [final chorus]

The name Light the Lanterns was coined for it by the first internet sleuths who looked into its provenance. Quite often the name for a song is a repeat "hook" line found within the chorus, something you go away singing and remembering. So Light the Lanterns is a good title, as would be Pray That the Rain Don't Come.

@Thunderlion1986 the group's name is Hazlewood. Legacy was the name of their 2nd album and the name of the titular track on such album. Light the Lanters was confirmed by Susan Graham White herself to not be by Hazlewood, so I don't know what other proof to give to tell you this is a false claim.

@Thunderlion1986 unfortunately this community is filled with disgruntled people making hoaxes like this trying to get any form of publicity. Makes everything 10000x harder to verify

Maybe Im the only one, but I would prefer this song to stay a secret. Finding the creator always kind of destroys the mystery.

Yes but then we can give the proper credit to the creators of these pieces

No I want to see the possible cartoon pilot that this might've been for dang it!

The lyrics about some magic island, lighting the lanterns for some shipwrecked sailors, gingerbread houses filled with a bunch of girls & some possibility of magic make me think that this might be the theme song to some failed 80s/90s cartoon pilot from some obscure studio. Like I can picture this being for a show about some witches on some island that have to protect some river around a place where a Chinese restaurant is at(might be in the US with the stereotypical font) from evil forces.

@@ethanfishell1930 Now I have to wonder how an animated series inspired by Martha's Vineyard would be like. This is seemingly the closest we could possibly get out of it.

I think the only thing we could do guys is not find the names of these artist less songs, but find more of them.
At least salvage the music and sounds of the past that were hidden in the dark.
Not gonna lie, with AI taking jobs, I don’t feel this is something it can do, because in its database the info for this stuff isn’t there.
And with humanity reaching loneliness and societal changes, the farther we get, the more we lose.
So in the future the Past Keeper or Past Bookeeing will def be a voluntary position in society
