Woodturning - Big Mouthed Plum !!

  • In this video I turn a piece of green/wet Plum into a natural edge vessel. I would normally seal the ends and store a piece like this to dry naturally but thought I would turn this green for a change .. I spun the piece as fast as I thought was safe and used a heat gun in an attempt to dry it. This was a bit of an experiment so I'm expecting a bit of movement and some splitting around the pith which in my opinion adds more character to a piece like this but I understand not everyone will like this.. I finished it with Danish oil and will eventually apply 4 or 5 coats ..

What a treat. No words, no obnoxious music, just real sounds and excellent craftmanship. And, as a bonus, your unbelievable eye for what the wood holds inside. Thank you!

You know what I think is fascinating about your work: it's not just what you choose to take away. It's what you choose to keep. You + Nature = exquisite.

It is amazing to me how you always manage to choose the perfect "angle" to mount the raw piece of wood, to end up with the incredible wood grain appearance that you get in the finished product that results in yet another beautiful piece of art. Thanks again for sharing.

Hi Andy, a lovely piece. I've got a few Damson Tree root-balls still in the garage, which look similar to your plum. They have a lovely purple red heart. I used to use my microwave to dry green turned stuff (low power setting - heat for 40seconds- let cool - repeat many many times.). A few months ago my old freezer packed in so I turned it into a wood kiln, using 40/60/100 watt incandescent bulbs (you can still buy them!). It works brilliantly. Thanks for sharing the video.
