I love how Devo made being a nerd into cool.
Devo had a huge impact on music - they fit right in their time period. Whip It, Beautiful World, Girl you want, Freedom of choice, Jerkin back and forth, I can't get no satisfaction etc
It's pronounced "Dee-vo". This isn't my favorite song by them, but they're always a lot of goofy fun. "Whip It" is probably their most iconic song, you should definitely check it out. They also do a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" that, on paper, shouldn't be good, but is somehow just as great as the original but for totally opposite reasons.
I looooved get no satisfaction from them....underrated track from them is Faster And Faster....
Wrong its pronounced dev-o like art deco but they couldn't be bothered correcting everyone so just say deevo

Neil Young is big fan of Devo and used to go to their shows at Hollywood clubs. Mark Mothersbaugh came up with Neil Young's 1979 album title Rust Never Sleeps which contains the iconic songs Hey Hey My My (Out Of The Blue) acoustic, and My My Hey Hey (Into The Black) electric/grunge.
Devo was among the first bands to ever do music videos like this, and their videos were what helped MTV to be born. Devo's videos were played heavily when MTV was in test markets. This video was made the year MTV launched (1981), but Devo had been making weird music videos for several years already. Then everybody started making videos for MTV.
Prior to that, almost all "music videos" were just simulated performances to the studio song.
when i first joined the Air Force my roommate "from California" was crazy about Devo! made sure i listened to all there music! i was drawn by the beer more so! but we opened the window and door and drew in the women to! we were party animals! i will not lie about that!
The look on ya'lls faces are priceless. This was one that didn't age particularly well, lol. Was goofy back then IMO. They have some great songs though. You may want to check out 'Uncontrollable Urge,' or their cover of the Stones 'Satisfaction.'

They were a weird new wave/post-punk group lol. Love them when I as a kid, though ('80s). Didn't take much to entertain us GenXer kids back then. lol. Wow, haven't seen that video in decades! Laser tag, roller skating, break dancing, etc, We did all of that!
Many more great songs and videos from them yall need to check out. "Whip It", " Freedom of Choice", "Girl U Want" , "Turn Around (Nirvana covered this later on)" were some of those cool yet wacky songs/videos. Also "Gut Feeling" song was a banger. Their singer also wrote songs for the TV cartoon show, Rugrats.

Devo is short for DEVOLUTION - the opposite of EVOLUTION. The kids in the video were NOT the band (the members were in the blue shirts in the locker room scene) Mark Mothersbaugh (lead singer)is still a highly sought after film and tv composer and runs a Music Company.

"Through Being Cool" - was created for the "Heavy Metal" movie soundtrack. It's not one of their greatest hits.
"It's A Beautiful World," - is probably one you should review.
"Whip It," is probably their most recognized song.
Q: "Are We Not Men? - A:"We Are Devo." is a Devo song every beautiful mutant should know. (It's actually called, "Jocko Homo."
"Freedom of Choice" is another great public service announcement song, like Beautiful World.
Devo is more of an "Art Band" Genera, somewhat like GWAR, or Die Antwoord.

Thank you for NOT doing Whip It and doing a song that is not usually done. There is SO much more to Devo (= Devolution) than Whip It. - They were/are literally the ANTI-Rock Band even tho they will probably FINALLY get inducted into the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame THIS YEAR!

Hey, I was a hall monitor back in elementary school so BJ shush, lol! It's DEE-VOH. The men in the teal shirts are the band members. Whip It, Peek-a-Boo, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Working in a Coalmine, Jerkin' Back and Forth, Freedom of Choice, Girl U Want, Jocko Homo. It's different is right and that's what made them awesome!

To watch Devo, you can't just go in blind. You need a Primer on Devo. By this point they had been around for 5 years or so. They practically invented music videos.
The have a whole mythology around them, based on proving that humans are devolving,.including themselves.
They were mad at consumerism and the u.s. military (for killing wear protesters) and had. A point they wanted to prove.
How 'bout you do a video, in honor of Asia, reacting to the band, ASIA- 'Heat of the Moment' would be a good one to start with!

Haha, the band are the five guys in blue. Those kids are not in the band. I tell everyone this when they are introduced to Devo, so I will tell you guys. Please check out their live performance of Satisfaction on Saturday Night Live. It's a cover of a Rolling Stones song, so I would actually listen to the Stones version first and then watch that performance, which is iconic. There is no other band out there like Devo, but there is a reason they were nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame. You know...a cook can make lasagna, and then a chef will create "deconstructed" lasagne. Some people will go..wth is this?? That's not lasagna! Others will go..omg...wth is this?? It's lasagna...but...not! Yeah, that's Devo in a nutshell.

devo sort of did what andy warhol did - distilling cultural trends down into simplistic primary-color caricatures of real life, except they did it to make fun of people.
