Why is it, whenever I listen to this concerto, I feel nothing but joy, but when I listen to most (not all) modern pop music, I feel nothing but contempt. I suggest music be a mandatory 2 hour class each day from 1st grade until high school graduation. And, after my tears have stopped welling up, I offer gratitude to the universe for these moments in time. Bravo, Ludwig, bravo...
I am tempted to think that the music industry deliberately frustrates the publication of truly good music, for it will raise the tastes of the public to the point that only truly good music can be sold, which will put those who produce truly good music in control of the industry.
Alina Bercu is my NEW FAVORITE among young lady musicians! I usually feel most strongly about violinists but ALINA BERCU is almost like a single element making a VERY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AS ONE! ❤

Perfection at it's finest, and all young kids playing the most beautiful music ever written in the history of music. Beethoven will always be my favorite Pianist, Composer . Alina was listening to every instrument in between her soft playing just to keep in perfect time with them all. Alina played Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto Perfectly and she's a beauty queen. There is so much going on, on the piano in this composition . That's what makes Beethoven the greatest musician of all Eternity. Alina I love you ! You were Fantastic. Lets not forget the conductor that kept it all together with his mastery.
Incredible. The Beethoven piece is gorgeous, only geniuses knew how to write music, Alina Bercu is a phenomenal player, the whole orchestra did a fantastic job.
What a beautiful performance . Beethoven is my most favorite composer of all times. I love his Emperor Concerto and the the 5th Symphony and the 9th. Saved me from depression. . Music is the best medicine cool your inner soul.
Alina Bercu, so articulate, her loveliness and so poised, dignity - brings the entire orchestra into her spell. All so young, so beautifully performed. The new generation is no disappointment! The 2nd movement worthy of tears. The beautiful and dignified pianist, the subtle orchestration of such young beautiful faces in their joy of performance, just sweeps one away.❤️💔 So thankful of no audience applause at the end of the first movement so as to not break the enchanting spell.
These awesome young people give me great hope for the future of the human race. Their dedication, enjoyment, and inspiration can be seen on all of their faces. So very well done! Thank you!
I couldn’t agree more! Wonderful music, beautifully played, by hardworking and dedicated young people. The future is safe in the hands of such brilliant youngsters.
This music transcends all that is going on in the world at the moment and, for me it instills my faith in the human race particularly when seeing this performance superbly executed by these young musicians.
For me anything Beethoven was beautiful. For many many years I had access to only one Beethoven Symphony "Pastoral" but other pieces I heard on the radio was glorious. I grew up in the days when there was no internet or UA-cam.
I have really enjoyed this video - not just the performance by Alina Bercu but also the orchestra, very young, very professional and very, very talented; congratulations also to the cameraman for some superb camerawork which enhanced the whole performance. Beethoven would approve.
This young Romanian pianist and her colleagues from the Franz Liszt University Orchestra offer us a refreshing version of the Emperor's Concert that, with the small defects that it may have, is beautiful and very nice. Congratulations to all, especially to the young pianist, a bright future awaits you.
What a performance!!! I am in tears, astounded. Unbelievably beautiful and tasteful. Alina Bercu reminds me of the old school russian pianists with impeccable technique and also great taste of music and phrasing. And what an orchestra!!!! Extraordinary young musicians! At par with the the greatests orchestras of the world! Congratulations to all!!
I just hope her mental and physical health is well. We see and read time and time about how unwell the pressure to perform makes these amazing performers.
Wow! It's the first time I am hearing Alina Bercu performing this beautiful concerto and boy she was brilliant! Well supported by the orchestra and a good conductor!
Man braucht nichts hinzuzufügen ...
I remember seeing the late Radu Lupu perform this concerto, in 1975, with Leonard Slatkin, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . My beloved grandma "made" me go with her even though she was well aware of my strong preference to watch the Chicago Cubs, that day at Wrigley Field,as I had hoped to obtain Ralph Garr's autograph. I remember sitting there with tears streamig down my face as I listened to the second movement of this incredible piece. I was never the same after those 7:17 (seven minutes and seventeen seconds) elapsed. Radu Lupu then and there became my idol, Ralph Garr, Hoyt Wilhelm and Hank Aaron be darned. Watching this beautiful young woman's mastery on full display brings me back to that day spent with my erudite grandma. What I wouldn't do to have but another minute with her. Perhaps this is the true gift of Ms. Bercu and her ilk; not, as it were, "hitting" the right keys in the correct sequence at the proper time, but helping evoke the moments and memories in the distant past, for which we long and that make us truly human. I pray that she continues using this gift she has been given all her live long days. God bless her.
This is a lady to keep an eye on as she rises to the top. Amazingly beautiful performance. I was so entranced with this video that I couldn't pull myself away for an important appointment, and was late. Frankly, I don't care! It was more than worth it. Thank you for sharing this amazing talent with the world.
Yes, Alina Bercu is on her way to being one of that group of beautiul talented female pianists who bless us with their great talent. She is definitely world class - of the first magnitude and the Beethoven Emperor Concerto certainly brings out her skills in playing and interpreting the music.
This is absolutely gourgeous - thank you Orchestra, Soloist, and Conductor - A favorite of mine for decades and this is a great performance. Thank you!
It is easy to get so caught up in the brilliance and amazing execution of this young beautiful soloist that we could miss some of the wonderful supporting musicians, especially the Horns and the oboists. As a horn player myself I was blown away by the lead Horn! What an AMAZING collaboration of the pianist, conductor, and every member of this orchestra! Bravo!!!
I was a little shocked, frankly, how well this orchestra performed with such young faces....the tightness and tonal accuracy were superb plus the dynamics allowed an excellent blend with the grand. I'm going to look to see if they did symphonie Fantastique anywhere on here.
All give a remarkable fresh performance. Wonderful pianist, top notch orchestra (hard to believe a student orchestra) and conductor at the top of his game.
Lovely perfomance! Gentle smile between pianist and conductor in 2.02 (never seen before anywhere) and gesture of final triumph at 5.15. We know, Ms Bercu, we know you can handle it like nobody else. Congratulations and thank you.
For a moment, step into the mind of a genius that created a heaven when there is none, but if there was, Beethoven would be smiling at those musicians who had given a true expression of his thought.
So very well played Miss. Bercu. You are so elegant, smooth and relaxed in your play that it seems to be effortless, when we know that much hard work and dedication has been invested in your talent. Your style and grace enhance your performance and are so appreciated in this modern age of beating the piano into submission. Thank you for sharing your efforts with us. The orchestra was very well practiced and led by Mr. Pasquet. There was no lag or push in their play, like a well made mechanical watch, all parts worked together to produce a work much greater in grandeur than their individual parts. The far chair oboist was perfection in her timing and power, a key player in the LvB Piano #5.
The performance was excellent but the telecast was one of the worst I have seen! The director lacked all situational awareness. The cameras were wrong places and the shooting kept jumping here and there without any sense. The director did his best to prevent the viewer from concentrating on and enjoying the performance itself. The director didn't even realized that in a piano concerto performance, the pianist has to be in the leading role all the time! The level of the telecast was really bad.
@@kristianeklof1913 I agree that the performance was excellent, superb in fact. However I wouldn't be so harsh as you about the filming. It is more interesting to watch the various instruments as they're making a significant contribution ; this especially applied to the wind and brass. I liked being able to see the pianist in the foreground with the conductor in the background. I hadn't intended to watch but the quality drew me in
The tempo, Alina's assertive, energetic and expressive version of this masterpiece as well as her rapport with the conductor and orchestra takes this to the next level! Thank you all xxxxx
Will remember the name Alina Bercu. First time listening her and was impressed with her poise and energy. Will be interesting how she will progress in the future,
@@physicsmusic I've loved Alice Sara Ott for a long time, and I'm just now getting love and appreciate Alina Bercu. the more l watch and listen to her and her artistry. First time I listen to this pianist and I must admit she 's an excellent performer. Flawless technique and perfect timing , phrasing and great musicality. I wonder why I have never heard of her before. Comparing with others is always difficult but she 's in the same category as Ott, Grimaud, Argerich and a few others. My personal favourites are Scheps ( for her Chopin interpretations) Buniatishvili (Rachmaninov) and of course Yuja Wang (She's from another planet). Male performers Trifonov, Kissin and Andsnes.
The second movement of the Emperor Concerto takes me back to the funeral procession for John F. Kennedy in 1963, when I was 12 years old. Magnificently performed here!
Beethoven…his passion is projected outwardly whereas Bach’s musics are well thought architecturally. It’s interesting that quite a few pianists consciously avoid playing this magnificent concerto. Nevertheless, this pianist commands the virtuosity of this piece.
Yes, he grows on you. The complexity of his music can be hard to digest on first listen, but with repeated listens you hear the structure. And you hear the greatness.
One method of listening to Beethoven that really helped me is to listen to the last two or so minutes of a movement FIRST. Then as you get to enjoy the way the movement ends, work your way BACK toward the beginning. It helps you see how he got to where he was going. Maybe weird but it works for me. I think the Beethoven work that this method really helped me with the most was his massive Missa Solemnis. The movements are so complex with so many themes, first digesting the ends of the movements helped me listen to it in enjoyable slices until I was ready for the whole.
@@johnvanalstine9645 I love this idea. I haven't listened to Beethoven this way (in reverse) although I have noticed how the ending of his pieces do sum up the the variety of emotions expressed throughout them. I am particularly moved by those pieces that fade away with gentle grace. The second movement of this concerto is a perfect example which I'll hit on after this: For me the most amazing piece of orchestral music is the 4th movement of his 9th symphony for the way it celebrates the experience of human life with all its happiness, sadness and joy while asserting that despite pain, tragedy and fear, human life itself is grand and beautiful. A couple of months ago I commented specifically on this concerto (and of course the amazing performance of Alina Bercu and this orchestra) but I want to express again what the second movement says to me since it also is composed as an emotional story ending in a summation. This movement speaks to me of his personal pain remembering a lost love. The movement begins with the intense sadness and heartbreak of the loss, flowing in to anger, followed by the understanding that he will find the strength to continue on, ending with that understanding mixed with "but... the pain will still remain; it will never go away." The movement kills me each and every time I hear it. This particular performance takes my reaction and flow of tears to a whole new level! Thank you Alina Bercu, Thank you University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, and Thank you Beethoven!
@@davidwelch8288 thank you for the response and the enthusiasm which is refreshing. Some people on UA-cam seem more concerned with sounding cool then expressing things. I am going to try to find some good examples of the method I was talking about and post them for you.
Absolutely wonderful! My appreciation to everyone involved. The Emperor has long been a favourite for me. But this is the first time I've had the opportunity to watch a performance. Usually, I enjoy via Classic FM radio here in the UK. Earlier this evening, I sat down to listen while doing some paperwork, but it wasn't long before the admin was set aside. I just had to watch this utterly riveting performance! As a non-musician, it seems almost unbelievable to me that a pianist could possibly play such a demanding composition. To see it accomplished is simply transfixing! I'm so thankful we have a Creator so beyond our imagination that He could bring into being creatures such as the human race, with creative and performance skills capable of development to this level. Deo Gloria! Maranatha!
Alina is a rising star. At the age of 27, she already succeeded in delivering one of the most electrifying performances of Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto. Ms. Bercu's playing of the Adagio movement in this performance was hauntingly beautiful, and it reminded me of nothing but the definitive recording of this concerto by Leon Fleisher/George Szell/Cleveland orchestra.
I picked this LP up (it was 1975) as a school boy, thinking it was the 5th Symphony ... which is what I really wanted. After a few bars I realised that this wasn't the music I thought it was but loved it instantly. It is SO much better than the symphony (to my mind)
I wish this were available in true HD and on CD or Blu Ray. Such an outstanding performance and superb filming. She is simply elegant, gentle, and yet has such humble prowess in her technique and performance. Love it.
❤I am in tears. The pianist was extraordinary. She directed the orchestra. She was speaking to Beethoven. Can someone this young be this good? She move the entire orchestra forward. I have never heard a young person lead the orchestra and play so profoundly well. I hope she gets all of the professional opportunities she deserves. Thank you.
I first heard this magnificent composition by Beethoven when I was a child , my mother was playing it , Beethoven her favourite composer ; brings back so many memories ….
The third movement is unusually gloriously performed, rich in expression and ambiance beyond many other interpretations. The entire performance is just beautiful by all performers.Alina Bercu is an amazingly gifted performer,
Bravo, alina, my heart melts down with pride & joy! Sorry for not writing earlier, but l let myself entangled with customs & traditions on National day! I turn to you & i wonder what is going wit us & how is possible to endulge in trifles, jokes& dances, beans & bones? How could we forget what is important and rally matters? In his book "Why beethoven" NORMAN LEBRECHT says that Concert 5 is a domain belonging exclusively to men. Should he see this performance he won't believe his eyes & stand nonplussed. For this happens to me and so I stand!

While harmony acts as accompaniment for the melody.
Pay attention to the details between 13:51 and 14:51!
In Western music, most harmony is based on chords.

Her mastery of the Adagio, a difficult and delicate part, was wonderfully done.
And Allegro, the best performance of all time, unique moments, which most miss, improvising (eg. Barenboim, Ashkenazi,...)
The Adagio was lovely and the youth of both the orchestra and Bercu certainly brought a vibrant but considered beauty to the piece.
For me anything Beethoven was beautiful. For many many years I had access to only one Beethoven Symphony "Pastoral" but other pieces I heard on the radio was glorious. I grew up in the days when there was no internet or UA-cam.
So well said

I have really enjoyed this video - not just the performance by Alina Bercu but also the orchestra, very
young, very professional and very, very talented; congratulations also to the cameraman for some
superb camerawork which enhanced the whole performance.
Beauté, élégance, fluidité with à good orchestre and it is possible to have à good time without looking all the time this lovely girl.
I heard no mistakes, only blissful love filled Beethoven magic
No defects except yourself..Du bist Dumm
I hope Beethoven is listening to this with perfect hearing. Please Universe, make it so.
Any and all complimentary comments about Beethoven's monumental work are irrelevant. 13:24
Mmk
I just hope her mental and physical health is well. We see and read time and time about how unwell the pressure to perform makes these amazing performers.
Same here, Remus! Great comment!

Wow! It's the first time I am hearing Alina Bercu performing this beautiful concerto and boy she was brilliant! Well supported by the orchestra and a good conductor!
My first time hearing this 'Emperor'. Elevated and inspiring.
Each time I listen this concert, I love it more and more.
This is a holy gift from God for Europe in january 13, 1811, inside Germany.
Not only for Europe but for the word.
Man braucht nichts hinzuzufügen ...
A beautiful concerto, performed by a beautiful, talented pianist. The. Orchestra is stunning, and so are the musicians .👏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you!
why am I so quickly hooked? Lovely phrasing, super ensemble. They hear more - so we do too. So THIS is Beethoven! Such delight in one so fraught.
and Joachim sure hears and knows audio excellence!
A supreme performance! Alina is breathtaking but so is the orchestra, it is mature and passionate a miracle for such a young orchestra.
I feel happy and grateful that, in the future, these talented young people will play on & on. Bravo!
Wonderful playing. Les
Bravo!!!
Yes, the horns were good.
I was a little shocked, frankly, how well this orchestra performed with such young faces....the tightness and tonal accuracy were superb plus the dynamics allowed an excellent blend with the grand. I'm going to look to see if they did symphonie Fantastique anywhere on here.
What a marvellous performance from such young musicians. This is one of my most favourite Beethoven piano concertos Well done to all.
Much appreciate this beautiful selection
yes it is beautiful
Incredible to enjoy the sensitivity of a young female connecting with genius. Terrific video. Thank you.
For a moment, step into the mind of a genius that created a heaven when there is none, but if there was,
Beethoven would be smiling at those musicians who had given a true expression of his thought.
I hadn't intended to watch but the quality drew me in
@@kristianeklof1913 I watched with my eyes closed and really listened to the music. Bliss! Thank you kids for an outstanding performance.
The tempo, Alina's assertive, energetic and expressive version of this masterpiece as well as her rapport with the conductor and orchestra takes this to the next level! Thank you all xxxxx
Absolute mastery in balance and control.Well done to all.
That second movement is other- worldly. The Angels are weeping.
With performers like Alena Bercu, the future of classical music, is literary, in good hand and assured.

Will remember the name Alina Bercu. First time listening her and was impressed with her poise and energy. Will be interesting how she will progress in the future,
Who's here the year 20/20 Corvid - 19 year !! Listening to and watching this lovely Lady play music in Lock down !!
Right here, right after watching Alice Sara Ott play Piano Concerto No. 3 :D
Justabrit Me and it is so wonderful to hear!
@@physicsmusic I've loved Alice Sara Ott for a long time, and I'm just now getting love and appreciate Alina Bercu. the more l watch and listen to her and her artistry. She is right up there with Alice Sara, Yuja Wang, Olga Scheps and others. Gosh, listening to her and watching her is like a part of heaven. Oh, Ceil!!
Male performers Trifonov, Kissin and Andsnes.
shut up
The second movement of the Emperor Concerto takes me back to the funeral procession for John F. Kennedy in 1963, when I was 12 years old. Magnificently performed here!
The youthfulness of the musicians betrays their abilities. So well done...and Ms. Bercu...beautifully played!
The more I listen to Beethoven, the more I understand why many consider him to be the the greatest composer.
The movement begins with the intense sadness and heartbreak of the loss, flowing in to anger, followed by the understanding that he will find the strength to continue on, ending with that understanding mixed with "but... the pain will still remain; it will never go away."
The movement kills me each and every time I hear it.
Piano nr.5 Beethoven, always my favorite my whole live. Madame Bercu a very brave person who can play the 5th in a perfect way. Thank you so much.
So you must be old now
@@duongnguyenngoc9160 Ha Ha! Yes, 61 and still loving this piece of music.

Thank you.

For this happens to me and so I stand!
