Hi Robin, Nikon have made a great Mirrorless camera, and the Viltrox 85MM lens is a great pairing. You are right about the Compression of the Viltrox 85MM, nice blurred background and it's pleasant to watch. Lovely Portrait photos and the Flowers had very nice colours. This was a fun video, thanks Robin. 😊
good video, thanks! I'm still using the Z6I+50s, even they just released Z6III, I don't think there is something I really need for upgrade, and I'm also using the OM1-3+121, so while traveling and hiking it's almost perfect, only the high-res takes 15 seconds which is way too long, TBH the camera's spec is more than we need...
The Eye AF in both Nikon an Canon cameras is really great and I think OM Systems definitely needs to catch up (Panasonic is on it apparently). I myself just picked up a brand new Canon EOS RP for 780€ and I'm really looking forward to the cheap Full Frame glory
I would like to see some new APS-C Nikons too, but this time with IBIS. Nikon neglected APS-C a lot just pushing FF. But larger sensors have some disadvantages too. And also some more crop lenses like 16-135/4 or new 18-200/3.5-5.6.
I think Nikon made many right decisions lately. They have several consecutive hits now, from Z9, Z8, ZF and now Z6 III. They have some nice lenses too.
@@robinwong Yes, Z8 seems finally like interesting Nikon body to replace D850 level, just that price is quite awful. And they are missing some equivallent to Canon R7 with that IBIS.
I had this lens on my Sony a7R II and a7 IV and I loved it, it has better build quality and better IQ then the Sony FE 85mm f 1.8 for half the price. But in the end I stuck with the Sony 85mm because of its significantly better focus tracking with my dog and in low light. This lens comes in many flavours because it's one of the most common and used optical formula on the Chinese manufacturing market. It's basically the same lens under Tokina atx-m 85mm f 1.8, Meike 85mm f 1.8 STM, Yongnuo YN85mm f 1.8S DF DSM AF, AstrHori 85mm f 1.8 from 150 to 300 £ (most of the variations between them is built quality, design, on lens features and built in motor).
I don't think the lens formula is the same for all the mentioned lenses. Ashtori sent me their 85mm F1.8 and it was terribly soft with some other issues, which were also found by a few other UA-camrs I'm in contact with. Then there is the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 II which was 30% smaller, with different optical arrangement! I can't say for the other lenses but I'm not convinced they are replicas or identical in optics. The huge difference in asking price says otherwise!
Love my Z5 ! No reason to u3pgrade yet. The new mirrorless Nikons are awesome in the hand and I agree whole heartedly about the Viltrox lenses. Great video!
Great video Robin! Love the pictures! Having used the Z5 for awhile now, do you feel you’ll consider upgrading it to higher end Nikon Z model in the future?
Thanks! At this moment, I still find Micro Four Thirds more than sufficient for my needs. But if OM Digital Solutions and Panasonic do not buckle up and show some real catching up, I might just consider alternatives, but that day is not soon.
I got a used Z5 a month ago, too, in addition to my Olympus/MFT and Pentax gear. I have been wanting to find out about the "magic" of FF for some time without spending too much. Got it with the 24-50, which is slow but very sharp on a 24 MP camera. Soon after I got the Viltrox 85/1.8 and I agree, it is great apart from the terrible hood design (attaching it is a pain! Got a step-up ring plus metal hood - works great now). The third lens I got is the 50mm f/1.8, which is amazing, too. It's a great budget camera, a perfect addition for MFT (still love MFT, of course).
What's your experience like with regard to the sensor being exposed when changing lenses? Does it get dust on it easily? Also, how come your face is always smiling? ;)
Hi: How do you like this Nikon gear vs the Olympus gear you have ? I have an EM1 MarkII and have been very pleased with it. Just considering adding something different to the mix. Not looking to bail from MFT. Thoughts ?
Both are very different, and I won't compare directly. Not sure what thoughts you were looking for? I have shared all my thoughts about Olympus, and newer thoughts about Nikon in newer videos. Not much to add really.
The face/eye detect AF on Z5 surpassed what E-M1 III can do. No comparison at all. E-M1 III can't hold the face and stick to it like the Z5, especially when the face is so far away. Z5 is even better than OM-1.
@@robinwong I appreciate the skill involved in not only framing the shot, but also framing the framing of the shot! However, it is interesting at 6:39 in the video when the camera is somehow seeing something else on the bridge and locking onto it. I suppose that one day we might be able to ask the camera what it saw!
OMG, I was just spending the past two months looking at whether going to OM-1 Mark ii (using E-M1 ii now), or taking another system targeted for low light + portrait indoor / outdoor evening/dusk, night environmental portrait with city lights, also targeted focal length shorter than 135mm equiv. This video helps!
It is also about your lenses. Camera at the end is the cheapest part of your system. If you already have some hi-end M4/3 lenses like 17/1.2, 25/1.2, 45/1.2, I see no problem with low-light at all :) And to be honest even my cheap Panasonic 25/1.7 and Oly 45/1.8 on EM5III work well for handheld night shots.

İt's too big body for me. I'm using Olympus em10 mark 3 with 15mm
Another absolute banger of a lens for budget money is the Samyang 135mm f2 crazy sharp and in 🇬🇧 it’s so cheap £250 unbelievable lens
Unfortunately that is not available for Nikon Z! I'd nab one in a second
Fun video. I love your emphasis on “sufficiency”
Yeah people forget about sufficiency and only want the latest and greatest

Thanks for the kind words, and yes the Viltrox 85mm is a gem!
Your very welcome Robin, thankyou 😊
Nice photos Robin. You just proved any modern camera with the right settings it is possible to get great images.
Thanks so much for the kind words. Also shows that modern cameras have become more than sufficient for most photography tasks today
Any good as a camera for moving street subjects Robin
Bro you got great energy ... Great video !!!!!!
Great Combo Robin and amazing Results for the Price!

Yeah these days, whatever camera we have, they are more than good enough for what we need to do
Great portraits with a beautiful subject Robin but those nails look dangerous.😊
Thanks Kevin! Appreciate that

Terima kasih buat videonya. My Viltrox 85mm paires with the Z50 and it works well. 👍🏾👌🏾.
Thanks for the tip, Robin! Z5 eh? Hmmmm...
Been using the Z5 for months

Robin likes ready to move on Full Frame from Mft 😂😂🙏
of course. Why not?
Compara el Olympus 45 f1.2 contra este Nikon z5 y viltrox 85 mm
I just bought one on sale and I really like it! Good camera!
Yeah the Z5 is a great camera

Alternative- a Canon Eos RP Used with the Canon RF 85mm 2.0 IS Macro. Its good that we have today such Options for our Photography.

Amazing! I have the Viltrox 85mm 1.8, love it. Great content!
Lily can make even Nikon FF, the inferior camera system, look good!
I choose the meike 85mm f1.4 Z mount, the price was very close to this one.
Bang please share lokasi kedai beli dekat mana atau link kedai kat mana..
Did I hear wrongly or did he mention rm3500? 😅
Great shots, Robin.
Thanks!
Looks great. What's the combine weight of the setup Robin?
I think about 1.4kg? Or less?
Thank you Robin .
Thanks!
Thank you :)
Cheers

Yeah the Nikon Z5,, if you find one in used market, should be below RM3k (after nego). The 85mm Viltrox also sells below RM1k
