It is beautiful! Kudos to Thomas Shafer for this brilliant timeless design. This is much better than the lumpy ID4 design. I ordered a 2023 ID4. After it arrived at the dealership and seeing it in person, I couldn't bring myself to buy such an ugly, poorly designed, cheap feeling car so I bought a competing BEV. This ID2 shows that a well designed, frugal car can be quite inspiring and special.

I've owned nearly every generation of Golf GTI over the past 34 years, and it was concerning me that the ID.3 and ID.4 didn't really appeal to me. I am so happy that Thomas Schafer is at the helm at VW brand now and understands the flavor and the accent that has always made the VW compact cars enduringly appealing. I breathed a sigh of relief when the ID.2 All rolled out onto the stage this morning and I saw that it looked how a proper VW hatchback should. Well done!

This car has restored my faith in VW. I was going to update my Golf 7 to the 8 but was appalled by the lack of physical controls for climate and volume. The ID3 did not appeal either, because it looks nothing like a VW inside or out. But this new ID2 is a return to form. It has the classic aesthetic feel of a Polo, and the tech of a 21st century car. It’s great to see VW back on track.

I think VW feels they got burned trying and failing to sell European cars in the US for years, and when they started selling more "Americanized" (that is, larger and more vanilla sedans) their sales numbers improved. But I know for a significant minority of us it has always been VW's European specs for smaller and sportier cars that appealed. Hopefully they will eventually figure out that they can still hawk their big boring sedans, SUVs, and pickups to the masses while profitably selling a small number of minimally modified European cars here in the US.

This ID.2all concept looks very close to production, I suspect headlights and the steering wheel at least to get some changes but otherwise it looks very production ready and I hope they keep the changes from other ID. cars, like finally having disc brakes in the rear again, because regenerative braking doesn't help in winter conditions you need disks.

I'm very impressed with the interior, the overall styling is fantastic, definitely going to be a class leader. The only minor gripe I have is the lack of dedicated controls on the steering wheel, which can make it fiddly to do things. I don't know whether it'll have cruise control for instance, but it's a lot easier to set that with dedicated buttons than it is to use multi-function ones. Especially when you're trying to keep your eyes on the road!
Also, no option for a spare wheel, even with all that extra space under the boot?
The fast charging doesn't bother me too much. Most people will charge overnight, and cars only charge at their max speed for a very short time before the battery resistance rises high enough (because of the increase in charge) that it has to throttle the speed anyway. I'd be okay with a small range for a car like this, it'll still be perfect for around town, and be capable for longer journeys, even if it means more stops. But ~220miles is more than I was expecting tbh.
It'll be interesting to see what the other makes who use the same base car (like Cupra) come up with.

    • @erniegerd3511
      @erniegerd3511 Рік тому +7

Quite sure there will be cruise control. I assume they won't give us the choice of a spare wheel as the extra space doesn't look wide enough to fit a wheel and I am quite sure the staggering 490 L boot space are taken that extra space into account. As some pictures indicated you can fit 2 cases of beer and 2 hand luggage items which may be like 100-ish litres in total.
Nonetheless, quite an impressive car. I totally agree with you regarding to charging power. Most people will charge over night and for those short rest stops on the highway, I'll assume 125-150 kW peak will be sufficient. Especially if the battery pack is not that big and hence the km// charged will be still reasonable. But I am pretty sure the 220 miles or 350 km will be the bigger battery pack and there will be no way you will get that for 25.000 Euros - more like 35-40.000...

the charging speed for the ID.2 is actually extremely impressive. Currently, the taycan does 10-80% charge in 21 minutes, and the ID.2 is going to do it in 20 minutes. ID2 is one *fourth* the price of a taycan.
Also for efficiency, VW is continuing to impress with their motor technology. The new motor in the ID.7 uses only half the energy as the motor in the ID.3, ID.4 etc, yet it is more powerful. With the ID2, vw should be able to make it even more efficient. Combined with the fact that the ID.2 is so small and light, range should actually be quite decent. (up to 400km real world with the bigger battery) VW group also has a new more efficient thermal system designed in house coming in 2025, and that will improve efficiency as well.

Hello Thomas … I’m a regular follower of your excellent car reviews and have owned various Volkswagen cars over the years … this new id.2 / id.polo is an exciting development which shows that VW are at last listening to their customer feedback, especially when it comes to software and interior quality issues … as an owner of a Polo GTI+ in Reef (Thomas) Blue, I would be particularly interested in buying this new EV especially if it becomes available in GTI/GTX format and has a range of 250 miles minimum … thanks for the update …John

…and just like that, VW is back! After so much criticism, virtually from everyone, finally a good looking example of int/ext design. Yes, range should be better and for me personally-a rear wheel drive would’ve been easily offered here. But, considering the projected price, bravo VW. You got a blockbuster on your hands (wheels). Let’s see the final product and let’s put a deposit down. Sweet redemption after screwing everything (again) with a refreshed id3.

I also heard 120kw charging rate, but considering a 57kWh net battery capacity and a 70% (10-80% SoC) charging session, you would only need to charge at 120kW on average: 57kWh*70%/(20/60)h=120kW. From what I've seen of the Model 3 SR with LFP cells tested by Bjørn Nyland, it took him 30 minutes to charge 10-80% SoC (short peak at 170kw). Peak charging rates don't matter to much, let's wait for the charging curve of VW's new cells and thermal management system!

Maybe one of the biggest changes will be that it will just get regular back doors with proper door handles. Good interview and overview on this new VW Thomas. I do to think this is the best direction for VW to head in, especially for the price and features/quality mentioned. Reminds of the eGolf which even today is a fantastic cheaper ev for a lot of people even if it's not new. But we really need cheaper EV's if we want EV's to truly succeed around the world, along with better infrastructure. I do however hope VW rethinks the decision to not bring the ID2 to the US. Plenty of people here want smaller more affordable vehicles especially for an electric vehicle. We need it too.

Really glad they brought back the physical controls for the AC, but I think it would be better if thoses and most of the interior had a matte type of texture in the buttons and areas you can touch instead of black piano (maybe looking like brushed aluminum, that could look good and not be a fingerprint magnet), as for the styling, I think it would be nicer an Belt Line and rear end similar to the MK1 Audi A1 now that this car will be gone, the belt line wrapping around the rear with the taillights bellow and the other belt line separating the glass and roof area make it look quite classy, beside that I think this car look great and can be a major winner to VW.

I do like the headlamps here. The round headlamps from the design perspective are an element on its own and don't really enrich the overall design. The slim horizontal headlights add to the bold stance of the car, while the round ones they are only there for their own sake. And to me the car would suddenly look too retro, something like a Mini or Fiat 500. This way you can't really mistake the car for anything else but VW.

I'm worried about the price point, 25k is around 100k nis before taxes, which are really high in Israel, so it looks like a 140-150k nis vehicle, same price point as some of the Korean small SUVs. a much better return on investment for most people. idk how well it could sell here, but I want one!
