Hi Lee, You are right regarding insurance premiums, I also know someone in the industry and they told me the same, that due to the cost of write off EV's being so high, that premiums have increased to cover this. Annoyingly for me as an ICE driver (a proper car) this also affects me, he said they have just increased across the board. My 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe increased by £300 year on year. Depreciation is a real killer. After five years replacing a battery after accident damage is more than the car is worth. Average age of gas cars on the road is approximately 14 years old, with many a lot older. No EV will last that long even if you store it. The battery begins to age from day one. If it lasts ten years you're lucky and by then it's worthless except for scrap. They are a rich person's luxury.

4:20 into the video and I can say categorically that the insurance has went up for diesel cars. My wife recently renewed her insurance and questioned why it had gone up so much - hinting about ev's and the chap on the other end said that they were definitely a major factor in the price rises. He also concurred that the storage and repair added a lot to the claims, along with car hire while the EV was off the road.
No doubt some avid EVangelists will reply to this claiming that I'm a liar, anti ev or some other such nonsense, so I'll reply to them now.

In major metro areas with millions of cars air pollution is a big issue and source of many health issues specifically for elderly and children. The same gas/diesel can be converted to electricy 500 miles away and all the cars in the city use the electricity. You get the point ? Now think about like you said only if 50% of the electricity comes from fossil fuel that will be a huge added benefit. On top of that it is a lot easier to control the air pollution of few big power plants than millions of cars and the list goes on and on.

In Australia I was speaking to a guy who replaces broken glass. The guys are on call 24/7 when rostered. They are legally able to park their light trucks at home in the street as they are under 4.5 tons and can drive them with a car licence.
There are plans to change the fleet to EV’s. There are some issues:
    1) The weight of the trucks will be over six tons and require a heavy rigid ( Cat C in the UK) for dual rear axil truck license, which most of the drivers don’t have.
    2) Trucks of this weight cannot be parked in the drivers home street as they will block suburban streets due to the size.
    3) There too many trucks to park at the company office yard. They will need to find a field to park them in. Another additional cost.
    4) The charging infrastructure needed to charge the batteries would be that of a small city meaning even the power companies network would need a massive upgrade to cater for the charging of the trucks.
    5) There would need to be massive increases in charges to the public to cover the infrastructure upgrades.
    6) Delays in after hour services as the driver would to travel to a yard to pickup a vehicle which they don’t do now. This will also add costs.
    7) The cost and time for all drivers to upgrade their licences.
    8) The distance travelled each day to outlying areas and back will mean range anxiety as they would have highway driving to return to the yard.
EV’s what a joke. They are not practical.
There was a plan to change all the small vans with Royal Mail a few years ago. How is that turning out?😂😂😂

In California insurance has gone through the roof for both houses and cars and, yes, it does seem that older ICE car owners are being punished for something they have no part in. My liability only car insurance has gone up quite a bit in the last 3 year. This is only part of the story though because our home electricity costs have also gone WAY WAY up. There are a few reasons for this but I would be willing to bet one big reason is because nearly everyone is putting solar on their roof through government incentives and/or empty promises so the power providers are simply making way less money off their average "customer." I put quotes around customer because, lets be honest, we have no choice. It's really starting to get to the point where you either lube up and take the cost now or risk potentially losing even more by not putting panels on your roof. Worst of all is that no one is fighting for people like me who simply don't want to pay a ton of money to hopefully break even on that investment 15-20 years; and are also unwilling to allow any company to lease space on their roof so that company can profit while slightly lowering my energy bill. I honestly find it shocking that so many people willingly do this, but a lot of people also buy brand new electric cars that wont be worth half their price in a few years while they also carry around a cell phone they have to charge twice a day because the battery no longer holds a charge like it did a few years ago... So; here we are. Out here in Cali it's getting kinda close to a government forced investment because its clear the people that have the power to stop this nonsense have zero intention of doing so and every intention of pushing this woke narrative further into the brains of those that live based on what they are told without actually researching and thinking for themselves.
I get climate change is important and you can believe me when I say preserving nature and our planet is extremely important to me but THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS IS. These are businesses gouging people based on government narratives and government allowing it to happen because those companies lobbyist have convinced them that they are in it for the greater good and not the massive profits they reap off legacy customers who are not buying into new "green" products.

The real reason EV insurance prices have gone through the roof is that when any damage however minimal, just like a scratch from a speed bump on the outer housing plate for the battery pack, no garages have the diagnostics to tell if the battery is indeed damaged, the only people who can diagnose are the manufacturers who will not give out the software to diagnose, hence the cars are written off for safety reasons, even though a huge amount of the battery packs are just fine, incidentally Tesla has now opened its own insurance company for Tesla cars only, and of course it will be cheaper insurance as they are the only people who can diagnose the battery pack, does the word cartel spring to mind ?

Just for reference, my business partner in Wanaka (NZ) bought a second hand Leaf 8 years ago. It had 93% of its battery when he got it, and it was only ever intended to run around Wanaka. It was just the second Leaf in Wanaka at the time. In the last 7 years he has replaced the tyres once, and the windscreen wipers, and a cabin HVAC filter - but he has NOT even had to replace brake pads or brake discs.
The car now has 60% of its battery left, and he slow charges it every night at home (outside - obviously!) - and it still runs absolutely perfectly for daily driving around town.
He now plans to run the car for ~1 more year, and then scrap it, removing the battery pack, and putting it inside a small outside shack as the basis of a solar power system, which stores energy in the battery overnight (from mains - he gets free power from 11pm til 7am) and the solar will run all day. His calculations show that even with 50% battery life he will effectively have zero electricity cost year round, and he may in fact have an excess, meaning he can put that into his new EV!
I'd say that's a pretty efficient use of capital, and a pretty good example of how an electric car CAN be far more efficient and handy than a petrol one.

Love your videos! I have just purchased a new PHEV. For me it works. I can charge at home overnight for 7.45p per kWh. This is sufficient for to drive 70% of my journeys in pure EV mode. When I need to go on a longer trip, I have the petrol engine, which has a sensible fuel burn, even with the extra 300kg of battery weight. When I contacted my insurance company to change from my old diesel car, there was no change in my premium. I have had the new car for less than a month, but initial impressions are that it works for me. The car was much more expensive than the ICE version, and I will never get my money back, but I thought I would see what all this electric driving was all about. I would never consider using the current public charging network which in my opinion is not fit for purpose.

No 30% in 2030 and it’s projected that there will be a further 50% in 2040, that’s more than 80%. How accurate these figures will at the end of 2024 I don’t know.

Do you think it is depreciating more than an ICE car equivalent? Highly likely, it’s cars in general not just EV’s.

The reason there are so many uninsured drivers is because if they are caught the fine is less than the cost of insurance. Very informative video. Well done,

Driving without insurance in the UK often results in you being banned.

@@nsweeney3970 which means you can no longer get insurance, so it's much cheaper to drive!

A ban doesn’t disable your vehicle or clamp your limbs, it’s a nominal order. Most banned drivers continue unaffected. And with the government continuing to legislate to make legal driving unaffordable, who can blame people for driving outside of the law?

@@HarryBaalzach You're absolutely right a ban doesn't physically stop you from driving. But if you've been banned from driving for no insurance and THEN you get caught driving on a ban, that will very likely land you a criminal record and a custodial sentence.
Do it again still and the sentence and the ban likely get worse and longer.
Essentially it's meant to be the slippery slope of facing jail time that should stop you from continuing to offend.
Generally on the whole it works because I would rather not pay the circa £1k of car insurance that I currently pay, yet I do pay it because the consequences of getting caught would cause me much more issues than losing that £1k a year.
If you can't afford your insurance and you care little about consequences then no doubt that might be the type of person willing to risk it.

And why don't they have a large roof over the charging area to protect people while filling their cars like at gas stations do ...
    Absolute lunacy ...
