My father was a flamenco guitarist. He passed away 2 months ago after struggling with Alzheimer's disease. He really loved Paco Pena and especially this duet. He was in a coma in his last few days. A few hours before he passed away, I played this for him. Amazingly he held my hand and had tears in his eyes. Right then I decided to fly all the way to Dublin to see the maestro playing this exact Farruca part with his companion. It made me so happy and thankful that I had a chance to watch the maestro playing this live ❤
One of the first videos I watched in UA-cam when I was a young kid, back in 2010/2011. Back then, there were really not many classical guitar videos on the platform, and most came from old VHS tapes like this one. I also remember very distinctly listening to a concert of John Williams playing La Catedral, Asturias on a TV set, and Sabicas malagueña in black and white. This played a role in creating my musical identity :)
I have had the privilege of seeing John Williams live at Birmingham Symphony hall, and it is only when you watch and hear these guys live you realise just how brilliant they are.
Pido perdon por haber tardado tanto en elogiar JOYA MUSICAL. que tiene algo de Bettinoti ( pobre mi madre querida). Interpretada por dos MAESTROS. GRACIAS A QUIEN LO SUBIO.
Thanks much for posting this ... I'm always impressed by the range of Williams' willingness to explore all kinds of music for the guitar ... and Paco Pena ... such a supreme talent ...wonderful!
I don't know why people say, "you should just give up, you'll never be this good..." In reality, there is vast repertoire of classical and flamenco pieces, that even the top 2% of guitarist will never get to play in their lifetime. So, just do what you do and be happy!
Great synergy. I have seen a video of williams playing with Bream, and they didnt have this sort of synergy. These guys compliment each others playing very delicately. Top watch. Top tune.
Thank you very much for putting it here. It reminds me in some places of the farruca by Sabicas called Los Caireles. Anyway magnificent so again gracias. Saludos Tomás
I'm always excited with John Williams, he will always be an open mind musician that never dichotomy a music that should be in this or that like the old fart segovia did! His duet with his best flamenco guitarist mate Paco Pena is always be wonderful! I love with those two humble musicians playing together!
You might have skipped on geography and history classes back in school ; but if you didn't, then don't call yourself names . They tend to stick around for much longer than you think... Y Ole!
Great video of a beautiful Farruca. Original by Sabicas and his cousin Mario Escudero. Paco Pena does a great version with Eduardo Falu (CD) and in concert with Elliot Fisk.
yep, that's right... i just wanna add a bit... flamenco comes from various cultures that have inhabited spain over the ages, it takes a piece of the music from the groups that have made espana home... generally we call a style such as the farruca, solea, or sevillana a palo, each palo follows a strict rythmic meter or in some cases more than one rythmic meter called compas...
Well, Paco Pena is called the ambassador of flamenco, and has done a lot to structurize it etc, and is more of the traditional type. It is a great way to learn to understand the different forms etc, because he stays really close to it. Paco de Lucia on the other hand has his own style, somewhat more free. Both are great guitarists, it is a matter of taste. I prefer Paco de Lucia, but I am gratefull to Paco Pena for the work he has done, and have his lesson book.
I met with Paco Pena in 1995 ..he is wonder person and down to earth, while John is not.. (regretfully)..and paco's guitar tone is unique and very beautiful spanish caracteristic..
