Bricklayer here. To all the young tradesmen up and down the country out there who've come out of their time... Get yourselves down to London for a few years. Doesn't matter what trade you do, you will learn so much more in the capital and earn well. Been here five years now after seven years of house bashing in West Sussex and the variety of work in comparison is phenomenal.
i want to mate but just dont know anyone that area so would struggle plus rent is bombastic
Excellent message, Robin! Very interesting if hectic day. Lovely moggies - I had a Maine Coon Cat who used to like her tap water & knew how to open the window latch to get into the garden. I hope your talent will inspire others to consider a career in construction. Yes, your beverage nook was/is very posh! People are fortunate to have you in charge of their build - I guess Tasmania is a bit of a stretch?!! Keep safe & thanks for doing what you do so wonderfully!
Nice to know how you're placed when checking out your mail. Keep safe!
Stair box are brilliant iv used them a few times there spot on
Our mornings start about the same, coming to the kitchen to open the tap for one of the cats 😅.
Love that!
Wow, I have to degrees in engineering(Electrical and civil) but I always wanted to be a carpenter like my dad☺️nice content sir.
A story that if you work hard you can play hard, everything well deserved. Great video.
Nice video Robin and thanks for showing us yanks London. I'm in my 47th year as a carpenter and I have never had a day like that. HA hA.
Great to have you watching!! 47 years!! Of carpentry.... you must have some serious knowledge!!
Interesting video but don't think this would be your typical day Robin to be fair.
Better than watching an ‘Ashville day’
Being in a merchants that feels pretty standard bar the radio stuff
Not all carpenters live a life like this buddy and in a house like that .obviously you are a master carpenter who's at the top of the game if I can do half ofyou you do I would be happy .edds been blessed to work with you 🙏
This chap seems to have done very well as a carpenter!
Our cat loves a bit of tap-time too! Interesting video, nice change from the big build vids. Cheers
That's great Robin, Screwfix never have what I want in stock :D
Wow. Very busy day. My cat only drinks from tap or his Petlibro automatic water fountain
I like seeing the get ready for the day add bonus
Brilliant video. Love your house .and cat 🐈 . Unseen work behind the scenes 👍.
Glad you enjoyed it
Well done that Screwfix. We have a good old industrial estate one nearby. They're opening high street shops now - not yet been in one of those where staff have any idea and stock is minimal.
Loved this video Robin, great to see this kind of stuff. I don't know what I liked more, the video or the beautiful cats! 👌
You're an inspiration Robin mate. As I said before, you really do inspire (at least myself) to achieve, and it's by watching things like this that really gears me up to strive to reach that place where I want to be.
Yes, it's been hard, and yes I'm super proud of what I've achieved to date, but through your inspirational videos, I fall deeper and deeper in love with what I do, and it only makes me want more.
Some things you say, little nuggets of inspiration I get from watching and listening to you, really stick with me. (I'm referring back slightly to those "podcasts" you and Roger did a while ago), and even still, some of the things that you say are just gold. Ie; you never know who you'll meet...etc... that's inspiring to me.
As I say, I've had it rough, starting from the absolute bottom, but again, things I get from your videos, and what comes out of that noggin of yours has, and still is helping greatly. Daily.
So , honestly, cheers man.
Hi Jon, thanks for your comment mate!! I'm happy that you have found the video and podcasts useful!! have you listened to any of the Fix radio podcasts made from my weekly carpentry show?? they are available on most podcast outlets too, You say you started from the bottom, I respect that mate, but by nature you seem like the kind of person that will keep moving onwards and upwards so keep up the good work mate!!!!
Awesome Robin , You need to get a New T-shirt " Rockstar " you are top shelf , I would'nt expect anything else , Hollywood
It's one of those jobs most people assume they can do themselves.
Cutting things and fitting them in place..
When they decide they can't be arsed to do themselves, they'll call a carpenter.
But demand absolute perfection at rock bottom prices. .
After all ..
All we do is cut a few bits if wood and tack it together..
How hard xould it be?
What a fella.. this is ambition taking you to another height, and few people stay grounded like our man Robin. Nice change of pace this video, hope to see more
These videos give the boys stuck in a rut of a routine and just ‘making do’ that drive to be more.
Me and a few pals just starting up for ourselves, just sealed our first big gig and it’s these videos like this from a humble craftsman that pushed us to chase it.
Upwards and Onwards
✌🏻
Love the merchant guy had no clue who you were lol
Ah you're a local to me! I'll make sure to say thank you in person if I ever bump into you! Really great videos and appreciate the effort you go into to teach us all! I've learnt lots from you. Thank you!
Nice one Alex, be great to meet you and say Hi!!
fair bloody play to you matey
Not afraid of much …. Not spiders, snakes, heights, noises in the dark …
However, the thought of driving on the other side of the road that I’m not used to makes me piss my pants in fear.
Very special video, and great editing, truly special to share a more personal account of the life. Well done all of u!
Believe me, you get used to it fairly quickly...you have to.
I'm amazed you could get a train. Great stuff.
You're an absolute breath of fresh air Robin me old mucka. I know plenty of Chippy's and none of them have a day in the life like you lol 😁👍 When you are a master craftsman with ambition, this is where it takes you. Fully deserved.
Great vid Robin, reminds me of my longest day, taxi to Luton airport at 4.30, fly to Edinburgh then taxi to Livingstone to have a meeting with client for shop refit in shopping centre then having to fly back to Heathrow and tube it back to Kings X for a train back to Hitchin Herts!
18 hr day but only paid for 8 hours as salaried, glad I’m out of it now
Robin this videos is fantastic. I’ve been following you for many years now.
You were my main inspiration to start my own UA-cam channel.
Thanks for the support on Instagram and taking the time to reply to my messages.
Keep up the brilliant work.
Ally
Hi Ally, nice message mate, have you uploaded any video you and what is the channel?
Another great video Robin. I live in Horsham so it was funny to see my local ScrewFix. That was Chris at Covers you were talking to. I’ll give him a hard time about his new celeb status next time I see him 😄. Love the cats 🐱👍. My cat prefers to drink out of the sink 🙄. Hope to bump into you one day 👍
Hi Sandy!! make sure you say hello if you see me in Horsham!! Chris is a really good guy, always happy and super helpful he loves a bit of banter too!!
Great to see you doing so well robin I've been following you for a few years now since I seen you on skillbuilder a true master craftsman really enjoy your content 👍👌
Much appreciated!
ExCeL - welcome to my home and work area from 1989 to 2019. LDDC was desperate to shift development land in recession so dropped plans for a big sports stadium for a feeble idea. As chair of local community forum, I did a bit of research on exhibition centres in Europe and suggested they could be more ambitious - included economic arguments. They agreed! (we'd built up a track record of constructive criticism so they always listened to us). Ended up with the current centre plus all the job creating hotels and associated eateries, florists, etc that I'd predicted. Hope you saw the Dockers Statue at the west end - project overseen by Royal Docks Trust (London) which we set up to continue voluntary sector funding after LDDC shut down. Met up with some old friends in Beckton last night and walked back to B1k and ExCeL to take Crossrail back to Woolwich. Good times and wonderful people.
DLR extension to Beckton stop at Canning Town was also a community campaign win against local council and existing LDDC assumptions about Alf Garnett's stomping ground (Heseltine was unusual politician who sometimes listened to local people). Many £billions made by many people on the back of that community 'win' as I tease the chap who led it
Priceless and wonderful idea ... bravo!
Even better than I was expecting! Such a great watch 👌🏻
Delighted you went ahead with your gut instinct and posted this 'day un the life' content...... looking forward to sitting down later with a mug of coffee to enjoy....... cheers Robin - keep up the good work.
Good Stuff Rob yes its exactly what a builder does during the day to make things happen! We don't sit around sipping cuppacino's all day contrary to popular belief 😀 Our cat loves drinking out of the tap something to do with running water. Cheers
Straight from the get go this reminded me of my little business which I must admit I loved. But people do not realise what you do before they even get up. I loved going to the merchants and once they know you life is made easier. You dropped on a very important subject sundries screw blades and the list goes on and yes I fell foul of this not pricing them into the job. But hang on you learn and if you do lose you don't do it twice. Business is hard customers are fickle they can't do the job themselves but expect so much. What a learning curve and i could go on. great video thanks.
Thoroughly enjoyed that, thanks for sharing.
I think we caught a glimpse of your log store, looks like a good one!
Cool!
Thank you, very inspirational.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Robin, your vid was photobummed @ 11:37 : ))
When I heard that intro music I thought I was just about to watch an episode of songs of praise 🤣👍🏼🤭
Great video Robin. Really love the walk-along content. As a self employed person, carpentry and building is a way of life and much more than just a job. I really appreciate how much passion and devotion to your trade you share with the UA-cam community. Thanks mate
You're welcome Zack!!
More of these type of videos/vlogs
That was super Robin. That charm and ease that flows from u is why u r where u r. Not your average chippy. I think the wife needs to feed the cats. U have enough on your plate
That was great to see how much builders do when they are off the tools. Just because you’re not on site doesn’t mean you’re not working!
Also, I love that breakfast/ coffee station. Any chance you could stick dome photos on Instagram? In looking for some inspiration for mine.
Apart from the waving, I think the pinging in your van at 8.22: is your van telling you to put your seat belt on!
Thanks for the tag along Robin :)
If Ronnie Corbett was a carpenter.. 😆..
Great 👍🏼 video rob ..
Brilliant video Robin! A blessing to community, hope to see more vids like this 😁
Thoroughly enjoyed it Robin
Thank you John!! Was great chatting with you on Fix Radio this week!!
Love the channel Robin, big fan! Lol our cat only drinks from the tap as well🤣
😁
Blimey, thats some schedule... As a landscaper running a small business I find time management the most important of skills in some respects, with making time for myself particularly important. Schedules can sometimes be more like juggernauts rolling over you if you're not careful! I really enjoy and learn from your content in lots of ways so thanks for putting that time in and uploading!
cheers Andrew
Another great video Robin, really liked the inspirational words at the end. Keep producing the awesome content
Thanks Andy, I will try!!
a bit different to my day as a carpenter in market harborough, keep it up mate.
I still watch the Capel build, was awesome
Great episode Robin, you always deliver an interesting video to the viewers
Great video as always. I'd like to see one of you explaining how you price your projects. You cover lots of the on-site works, but what about the pre-construction phase ?
I will do a video on that at some point Kevin, thanks for watching mate!!
@@ukconstruction that would be great. I'm a Construction Estimator now, but originally a Carpenter. I'm always interested in seeing what methods tradesmen use to price their work
Cracking video !
Nice Robin. Hope your filmed the Excel show the next day 👍🏻
Nice one Robin
Good stuff 👍 I recognise that screw-fix!
Hardly a typical day in the life of a plumber Robin. More a day in the life of a celebrity plumber 😀
Plumber??
@@ukconstruction 😂😂 sorry Robin, must be the drugs.
Cats like drinking from moving water. you can get bowls that are like tiny fountains to encourage cats to drink water, helps prevent bladder and kidney problems due to lack of fluid intake.
DO A HOUSE TOUR SUCH A BEUTIFUL HOMW
Maybe Joey!!!
Great video Robin !!! thanks
I'll watched this later with a Nice Cup a tea and a few Hobnobs.
Exhausted watching the video let alone actually doing all those things. However good to see Rob is human by making a mistake on his Screwfix order. Loving the big build.
Nice room. What is annual salary
You missed out the lunch at the 3 Star Michelin restaurant in Cannes where you travelled by executive jet.
I've gone off that restaurant... to cheap!!!
You're a lucky man Robin doing something that gives you so much satisfaction. I better shut up now other wise I may start getting that sense of envy rising up through my bones. Thanks mate.
You've got to be strong willed and positive to get through this job. I find even just collecting materials in the morning to be often stressful and put me in a bad mood to start to the day. 😅
Great content Robin
Best thing to protect the stairs would be old carpet of carpet off cuts
Just the same as one of my dad's days in the seventies, er, excluding, the computers, the internet, cappucino, reliable vans, battery tools, at least the start time was the same!
Electronic business is so easy; but no chance any more of popping into the hardware store and asking for Fork Handles; or was that Four Candles😂
So true!! Love the old comedy cliche too !!
Really good video robin..nice editting too
for me today i squeezed in a remedial job for a local kitchen company. slightly undecided on that score... bad fitters or bad prices meaning fitters rush to get jobs finished... im used to entirely doing my own work though... this was a favour job. then had to liase with plasterers and electricians so not a lot done bar fixing the broken raking in the back of my van.
had an absolutely horrendous weekend though regarding friends and mental health. so this weeks been a write off from the start unfortunately
Hi Paul, sorry to hear about your weekend mate, I hope that the situation is working its way through, I feel that the world we live in and the day to day demands and pressures that we all have mainly bought on by sometimes just trying to live from day to day and not get behind is really hard. You are right about the kitchen fitters being pushed with bad prices!! the ultimate outcome is problems. Have a good day mate
@@ukconstruction sadly it didnt for my friend. the scourge of recreational drugs claimed another victim. just awful for the family and especially the young children too
yes you are right about day to day demands and pressures. everyone wants things right now.
haha ohh yes.. seems the fitters who work or subby for companies are flat out and dont get the chance to spend a bit time getting jobs perfect. having said that.. if i price it and it takes me ages then its my own fault.
Still hoping to get over to the UK and do some work with in the future Robin
Do you earn your wages? I should say so! I really enjoy films like this it demonstrates how multi skilled many of our trades people like yourself are and how much is involved with running a successful business. Wish you continued success Robin(and Ed) and thanks for sharing all you do. Cheers. PS good to see the vineyard at Dorking still going, used to pass it on our way to Boxhill on our motorbikes at weekends nearly forty years ago, lol.
YESSSSSS!!!!
Almost whispering first part of video so not to wake the wife up.. we’ve all been there obviously with our own partners 😂
If you like buildings you'll like Nicholas Hawksmoor. You're a champion of the self employed, cheers.
Thanks
Thank you so much!!!
You’re very welcome 😌
You have a nice looking house
7:50 Fein pack of 6 on Amazon £26.95. Best blades IMHO
It would be sick if you do a house tour
Your cat is perfectly normal. Cats of all descriptions naturally prefer to drink from flowing water sources as the water tends to be fresher. Trust me, I am here for the carpentry knowledge.
Can you become a good carpenter by starting out as a labourer rather than a traditional college based apprenticeship?
That 'string' of oak plugs is a good idea! Can you tell us where they are from please?
Hi Paul, these are available in most decent timber merchants, they are great!!
I still call it the millennium dome 😂
There ya go cobba... job done. Didn't look that painful, and also looked like you enjoyed it which is a must in whatever you do in life. I watched the decline of the apprenticeship schemes from the early 80's onwards, from 4 years to 3 years to 6 months, now its pretty much on the job training... such an outright shame. It's video's like this, from certified accredited tradesmen, that is the only thing that provides any realistic guidance on day-to day business and what's involved for those starting out, to those seasoned people wishing to improve their skills and knowledge. It's no different here in Western Australia where I moved to from Wales, in fact, I found it even worse, so called apprentices having no technical guidance in construction methods and cross exposure with other trades.... you simply turn up with a gang on site and learn every short cut and bad trick in the book, and visit Tech College (TAFE in Australia) for 1 month out of a year - what the hell can you get out of 2 weeks in each 6 month semester, compared to the old British system of full time attendance for at least the first 12 months followed by at least 3 days a week for the next few years... site experience during holidays. It's a crying shame to see the old skill sets being eroded, so Goodonya Robin for persevering with the Channel and taking the time to invest your knowledge in others.
Hi Glenn, many thanks for your comment. It is such a big problem now the lack of training and the passing on of knowledge and essential skills needed and I think you are dead right in all you say about this starting from the 80's onwards, I was training from 86 to 89 and I was full time in college for a big part of that too!! Are you working in construction in Australia now? Cheers Robin
@@ukconstruction yes we were the last of the correctly indentured apprentices I believe mate.
I came here on my trade ticket almost 17 years ago worked in construction, then forced into iron ore mining during the 2008 crash for regular income as a technical Officer. I am a bricklayer by trade (sorry), I wannabe chippy, but my dad enrolled me as a bricky much to my disdain 😂... I loved working in the joinery shop with the carpenters when it was raining... No going home for apprentices those days as you will remember. I have never stopped striving even at my age mate to learn skills from good people such as yourself... Wonderful 👍.
I live in Margaret River, and currently putting a roof on my new house, just finished the brickwork, 30,000 of the buggers. Keep up the good work.. P.S. you have a wonderful home there... Well deserved 👍👍
I can't believe it Robin😲I was in Vauxhall today😆 Hopefully catch you next time mate👊
Just heard about that!! So sorry mate!!! Anyway look forward to seeing you next week, take you for a beer after!!!!
@@ukconstruction 👍
👍
Thanks Tino!!! really kind mate
Is the volume low on this...?
I think you need to drive a little slower ;-) Enjoyed watching, Robin.
💙👊😎
