  • Stigma, ignorance, neglect, superstition and communication barriers for children with disabilities are among the social factors that explain their discrimination and isolation from society.

Disability is a social issue -- it results from the interaction between people with "long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others" (Article 1, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability). It is not the impairment itself, but rather attitudes and environmental barriers that result in disability. Children with disabilities are often 'invisible' to service providers and they are at greater risk of violence than their non-disabled peers. Children with disabilities are often disproportionately placed in alternative care, rather than remaining with their families. These raise concerns for their protection.
UNICEF's strategy is to promote the recognition of all children as full members of society and the respect for all of their rights without any discrimination. We work with partners to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities into society by stimulating changes in attitudes and practices of the general public and service providers toward children with disabilities. Further, UNICEF works with governments to help ensure that family members of persons with disabilities, who are often the primary caretakers, and children with disabilities themselves, receive assistance from the State for disability-related expenses, adequate training, counselling, financial assistance and respite care. We also support efforts to ensure that all programmes, including recreational programmes, public services, facilities and relevant buildings are accessible.

These and similar situations are visible in every day of my work with Bosnian children. We must know 1 thing: by giving a hand to the kid we r giving a chance to the future. The awareness that we are understand and loved during childhood will make us stable, confident and capable to give and to share all those feelings which life is actually worthy. Children's eyes are small and scared of the outside world- they have only us:adults, to help them in their small steps toward their own sun.

There are some very easy ways to see that all children are included in our society. In some ways the social barriers for children with disabilities are the most difficult to overcome yet with new thinking and a wiliness to change that comes with awareness, better lives and better futures await us all.

Some of us experience to be discriminate by other people, because they are different to some people eyes but they all need special treatment and understanding from us to their situation. Like us they are also a human they need is to be loved and accept what they are.

True, growing up I suffered discrimination especially on my own family, my grandma called me retired and my mother said I can't work & have a future and now she's yelling at me for having a depression and not having a dream & plan (Like mother, like daughter)

What can I do to stop police from lecturing me and guilt-shaming me and instead protect me..???
what must a person do if a member of their family goes behind their back and takes all their usb sticks without their permission and throws out the person's books and personal products without the persons permission and goes through their belongings...??? this person is a fully gown adult who they are doing this to. any advice on this?

I'm a big fan of your videos on UA-cam and I was wondering if I could have your permission to translate one of your videos into Chinese and share it on platforms like Chinese TikTok. I really enjoyed the content and I think it would be a hit in China. Of course, I'll make sure to credit you and include a link to your UA-cam channel in the post. Let me know if you're cool with it and if you have any specific preferences for the translation. Thanks a lot for considering this request - looking forward to potentially working together on this.
