Not a West Ham fan but its 100% a major trophy in my eyes! Its a European competition and however you dress it up, you still have to beat other good European clubs to win it. Teams who are in the Europa League drop into it at one point making it even more difficult to win. Winner of UECL gets to go into Pot 1 of the Europa.
To get into the comp you still have to either win the Carabao (which itself is defined as a major trophy) or finishing 7th (and to finish 7th you've got to better 1 of Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Newcastle and Spurs - all seen as big clubs who will want top 4 every year)
For a team like West Ham, Villa (who are in it next year), or a Palace, Fulham, Brentford and so on -- they'd love to win this and would be huge for them if they did.

As a West Ham fan, I can't even begin to describe how amazing last night was. That feeling of disbelief Smiv mentions? It's still there.I still cannot believe I've finally seen my team win something!
I've seen a lot of fans from bigger teams today on social media trying to write this off or discredit it by saying things like "it's a Mickey Mouse trophy" or "you can't call yourself Champions of Europe because it's only the 3rd tier tournament" etc etc....I don't care. We ARE Champions of Europe, and no-one can take that away from us!
Lets face it, West Ham are probably never gonna be in the Champions League, and if we ever did somehow sneak into that competition, we're even less likely to win it. Chelsea fans, United fans, Liverpool fans (even to an extent, City fans) have become so used to being in and competing in the Champions League that they've almost become desensitized to it. It's normal for them.
They view the Conference League or the Europa League as being "beneath" them...well, cool. It's not for you, then. It's for teams like us, who don't get to win things, who view being in Europe as special, and I can tell you for a fact, every West Ham fan has got the BIGGEST smile on their face right now, and will do for a long time! This......was special!!

Very well said. I am a Liverpool supporter and i agree with your sentiments, 2nd tier if not 3rd tier European Tournament is view as massive or major to clubs that are less popular or famous because they have to fought very hard to qualify for the game.
Big clubs which got used to play in the top tier, they might face transition period one day but manage to qualify either 2 of the lower tier competition will feel what its like for the less known clubs.

One of the best takes I've seen on the Conference League is that it gives teams that cannot compete against the power houses in their domestic leagues a chance to experience a European campaign. It's beautiful in its own way. Fans of mid table clubs need that experience because seasons after season of finishing mid table sucks the joy out of football after 10-15 seasons of the same thing over and over again.

I started following football back in 2015, it was due to my parents getting me FIFA 15 for christmas. For the longest time I didn't support a specific team. In 2018 I remember seen an article from ESPN about Mark Noble getting into it with a fan that stormed the field. When I read that I started following West Ham as much as I can. Got the jersey that year and tried to learn as much of the history of the team as I could. Only downside is that where I live in the US there aren't that many West Ham fans close to where I could join and watch the game last night.
But I felt like I was there with all of the Hammers in Prague when we won last night. Absolutely unreal. Hopefully more are on the way aswell.

I remember the days when besides the European Cup, the Cup Winners Cup and the UEFA Cup were a huge deal for teams competing in them. No one back then thought the Cup Winners cup and UEFA cup were inferior competitions. If you think the Europa Lg or the Europa Conf Lg is inferior, you could make the argument that the Champions Lg itself is watered down -- you could be champions of Europe but not even champion of your own domestic league. Gone are the days when the Champions League is reserved for champions.

Europa Conference league is a great trophy it was needed. Look how much it meant to fiorentina as well they were a historically big side. Last year it meant so much to roma mourinho was in years. It's a reward for a top 6 top 7 finish which meant nothing before this competition was invented

Massive scenes last night in every pub, so happy that we brought one home. I will say though, it's absolutely a major trophy. If it were any of the so called Big 6, everyone would call it a major trophy. Because it's West Ham, it's suddenly not a major trophy - we went entirely unbeaten and won a European trophy, that's more than the rest of the table, excluding City and United.

Its a Major Trophy, the prize for winning the Conference league is getting into Europa league - the same as the FA Cup. Prize money is more than the FA Cup, and its much harder to win a European cup than the FA Cup due to fixtures and touring thousands of miles.
So is the FA Cup not a major trophy? Course it is. So that means the Conference league is 100% a major trophy

  • @Jaybale3

i'm similar to you with the fa cup win in 91, i was 4/5 when we won the league cup in 08. i don't think i watched the game at the time and don't remember anything from that time. i've watched back the game in later years but as it wasn't live and i knew the outcome i still haven't had that experience so till this day i'm still yet to experience this. my dad was born in the late 60's so he's seen us win a fair few trophies mainly the 2 uefa cups, the league cups and the fa cups from that period. i'm dying for anything such as a league cup, fa cup and i'd even be happy with the conference league.

The expectation is to win at United, not to finish in top 6 or get out of the group stage in champions league, so I definitely can agree with Smiv here where for the “bigger clubs”, trophies and finals may not have the buzz or butterflies feeling

The feeling you get waiting 43 years to win a major trophy will always be stronger than a club that wins things reguarly. Utd, Chelsea and now City are so used to lifting silverware that they've almost became desensitised to it. The euphoria when Rice held that trophy felt so strong because of the PAIN and SUFFERING weve endured leading up to it.

  • @stijno9460
    @stijno9460 Рік тому +4

Definitely a major trophy. I am well annoyed by English fans, like the likes of a Mark Goldbridge and others, mucking the competition off. It is great that teams all over Europe, who are generally not able to play european football in the CL and EL now have a European competition. These teams are pivotal for football. The premier league is as big as it is partially because they sold their soul to investors allowing them to buy out all other leagues. But those leagues are what make football so great. The grassroots, the fan-culture, the real football, all played outside of the premier league. The conference league is great because it gives these clubs and fans a stage. West Ham did an amazing job. Well deserved. Amazing club. Not normally in Europe. And look at them now. Just amazing really.

Thank you for your honest opinion. As a 53 year old hammer, I was 10 when we won the FA cup in 1980 beating Arsenal. So Wednesday night was a big deal for us fans. 43 years of heartache and disappointment gone in 1 night. I hope we can push on and fight and have a good Europa league campaign and challenge for the top 6 in the premiership, but being West Ham i doubt it. This is our reality as a hammer. I think the biggest gripe with us and Spurs is that self entitlement of some Tottenham fans for glory that riles West ham fans in my opinion. I enjoyed watching this, and I feel your pain when you are going through the same frustration as I have for the last 43 years. Great vlog 👍

Absolutely get what you mean about "that feeling", Smiv. As a Cardiff City supporting Welshman, the past 15 years have delivered some unreal things I never thought I'd see as either of those things. Cardiff in the FA Cup Final in 2008. Reaching the EFL Cup Final in 2012. Seeing us in the Premier League. Witnessing Wales reach the 2016 European Championship Semi-Final. Qualifying for a World Cup. I've yet to see either win a major trophy yet and may never will but those are experiences I never thought I have as a Cardiff fan or Welshman. I'm buzzing for West Ham fans because they get it and they appreciate it. Congratulations to all of them!

Im a Birmingham City fan, that was also me when we beat Arsenal at the Carling cup, I was there with my Brother, none of us were expecting to win that day. When we lifted the trophy it was how West Ham fans felt, you just can't describe the happiness that your club won something like that, and we were odds on to be on the recieving end of a thrashing from Arsenal (due to us later that season being relegated). Still... I will never forget that day

I’m a West Ham fan. This is my take on it.
Football has changed dramatically over the years. Behind the scenes, club ownerships etc. The clubs like us and those around us, cannot compete. Unless it’s a freak like Leicester. Every year teams like us have to watch teams like Man City mop up league cups like it’s nothing and not even appreciate it. Playing weakened teams. The gulf in wealth between top teams in European leagues and the the others following them is just crazy. It wasnt go drastic 50/60 years ago. In a nutshell, you’ve can only compete in what you can afford to. Next year in the premier league, you have a team with the state wealth of Saudi Arabia competing with teams like Luton.
This competition is a masterstroke by UEFA and it’s been long long overdue. There are so many clubs out there that would love this, huge clubs that haven’t won anything in decades. You look at the celebrations in KO rounds and tell me it means nothing. I cannot stand this modern football fan snobbery of any silverware. You should want to win everything you’re in. Are we supposed to go out there and want to lose cos it’s only the third tier?

If the Charity Shield is a trophy worth mentioning, I'm sure this one is too! I think it's all relative. Sure, it's not the CL, but West Ham aren't at that level at the moment. For Man City, this wouldn't have been such a big deal (though they'd still have celebrated!) but for teams that haven't won anything in decades - that's what the competition was made for. West Ham invested a lot of time and effort into the competition, and sacrificed some league form, and at that point, you want to win the thing, not burn out in a final. Make no mistake, their opponents last night wanted that glory for themselves!

You are in it to win it. All beit its the lesser of the 3 European Comps but Semi Final of Europa League then Winners of Europa Conference. It is a Major Trophy. We dont get credit for Inter Toto Cup in 2000 which was a European comp before UEFA Cup, not sure why its still a European Cup but now we can chill for another 40years Hahaha but fair play Smiv n thank you.
