We have all heard of puppet states, but puppet states are just a tiny fraction of all the different kind of similar arrangements a territory can be in.

@MANETIT Naj That would explain A LOT
@MANETIT Naj I'd say Norway are the distant cousins who used to hate each other given that England ended the Viking Era. I agree that France is England's father due to the Norman Conquests of England of 1066. But throughout history there rarely been a time where the English and the French liked each other other than recently so I'd say France is still the father but doesn't live with the son (England). The French, Dutch, Spanish and Russians all colonised the United States partially so the US is partially an I nation formed from multiple related people groups (the Spanish are related to the Dutch and the French are related to the English).

Don't forget China. The EU doesn't count because it really isn't that aggressive.
@@Arcaryon EU is a economic union, how can a economic union have puppets?
@@reptile_loki Because it is and it isn't. Understand that politics is a wide field. Once it was only about trade but this is long over and definetly a good thing for all of Europe. The thing is; the EU is on the way to become some kind of legally united stateesque system. BUT - it also isn't there yet. I could write a book and not get close to answering this question. Let's just say that it's an extremley political entity and that calling it a mere trade union is an extreme underestimation of the complexity of the entire affair. For example - a trade federation wouldn't discuss a shared army. Or maybe it would but the point is that the EU was and will always have the intention to be more than a mere trade alliance and looking at its ever increasing democratic elements and legal power over the member states government's, it's only a question of time before it actually evolves in something completely new.
@@reptile_loki And keep in mind, a trade union can be just about trade BUT since trade is econemy and econemy is a deciding factor for any government, one can conclude that based alone on this fact, even a very limited trade union will have an extremely political impact on all involved parties, directly or indirectly and therefore demand constant answers. Case in point - the EU budget. The members have very diffrent views on this number, how it should be used, increasing or decrease and how important a democratic legitimation of the process is. Take Poland. It wants a big EU budget but less EU involvement. France wants a big budget but more EU'S involvement. And to talk about this question alone would require me to wrote for days if not weeks.
If I would cut a lot of necessary information it boils down to an extremely superficial no, it's not even remotley just a trade union. It's a project to unite European nations but really all democratic nations with a certain westernized ideology ( countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia or Canada are while not in any process of joining or debating the option, possible members of the Union) under in one union. Google the question but a fair warning, don't judge this topic too quickly. The EU in concept is a good thing but far from perfect or even in a decent condition. And many people get extremley emotional and forget all logic when debating this topic. A lot of dangerous nationalism opposes it. Dangerous because alone, no western nation can stand against China or their new best friend Russia. It's also complicated but and I can not stretch this enough, don't just glance over this topic or you WILL get it wrong.
Which countries are puppets of the USA?

Officially a puppet state is a government contolled by a foreign power, it is not specified if this power has to be political of commercial.

I think the first time I heard of the term 'Puppet State' in HOI4.
Interesting video. Worth noting that the concept of puppet state is rather different today than it once was. The Montevideo Convention requires a state to have a government as a condition of statehood. This is now generally understood by legal scholars understood to mean *independent* government. A country formed as a puppet state is therefore not a state under international law. The question of countries that come under external influence later. This is a trickier area.

Hello

You say there are no modern puppet states, but what about the France-Afrique?
France influences but it doesn't control the decisions. It's not a puppet stateb- it's a dependent state relation.
It's like the entire EU influences indirectly but never actually gives a course.
China is the same in its relationship with for example Africa.
@@Arcaryon France has any leader in the France-Afrique killed when they don't comply. They even control their currency, and have military operations in plenty of those countries.
@@obsrvdsplash115 I think actively killing leaders and supporting diffrent sides is not the same.
France supports Haftar. Not super officially bit they always prefered dealing with military leaders and yes, they still use their influence in the region of North Africa to gain information and they make independent decisions. The currency control is new to me;
having military operations though serves to gurantee a relative stability via keeping terrorist organizations, rebels aso. in check while also being able to keep the aid favored regimes. Still no puppets.
They don't make a secret about their involvement and due to the treaties allowing them to station troops in the region; they have sigificantly more legitimate power than for example Britain who are focusing on their commonwealth but far less on the continent.
According to a quick research I just did, France intervened 19 times on the continent from 1955-1995.
The Spiegel (a big German newspaper that is also know for being very opinionated but still is a lot better than most journalists and intellectuals give it credit for sums up in this article I highly recommend)
www.google.com/amp/s/www.spiegel.de/international/world/eternal-plight-france-in-search-of-a-new-africa-policy-a-546796-amp.html
I want to emphasize the interventionist aspect. No puppetstates but supported governments.

actually there are some puppet states, but they are not called so because of the political implications, these could be considered so: Belarus and Kazakhstan for russia, small pacific islands and minor central american and caribbean states to the US, lesotho and eswatini for south africa, small european states dependent on the EU (wich implicates germany and france), north korea and laos for china, and the list goes on
I saw one video (Polymatter, I think) that said that NK isn't as puppet-y as you'd think. China actually sees NK as more of a nusainse than an asset, but keeps them around as they don'w want a border with SK. China is kind of a reluctant puppet-master to NK.
