80 years after WW2, Russia's continuing population woes can be blamed mostly on government policy. When your nation is corrupt and authoritarian, it is tough for a young family to want to have children. Russia continues to needlessly threaten its neighbors and suffer sanctions. Its state owned/oligarch controlled industries enjoy so much protectionism that the common man can't compete. Jobs and wages stagnate or shrink and then who can afford kids?

    • @markzucker5893
      @markzucker5893 2 роки тому +22

Yeah, other countries suffered similar or worse destruction as a result of WW2 - e.g., Poland, Germany, China - and have long since recovered to a far greater extent. People can't keep blaming Russia's woes on 'the scars of WW2.' It's an excuse some Russians use to avoid accepting that their biggest problem is having terrible governments for over a century.

Anthony Perez To manage it you have to create more residential zones during the death wave, and make sure to keep immigration at a constant pace. Also, put crematoriums or cemeteries everywhere so that everyone doesn't leave a building when a person dies. Also, deathwaves are not accurate in Cities Skylines because of birth dates being ridiculously high in the game, and deaths being ridiculously high as well. Mods can help prevent them, however the game needs to be more realistic.

Very thought provoking video. Just a couple important fact corrections tho… the Asian part of Russia is comprised of numerous republics and provinces. Siberia is just one, albeit large, portion of it. The climate varies greatly even in Siberia’s province, as the northern most point reaches the arctic, while the southern most touches the mountainous deserts of Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Government sponsored repression is another huge cause of population decline (that wasn’t mentioned in this video). Further, the income gap in Russia between elites and the poor is one of (if not the worst) among developed countries in the world. If the wealth of Russia’s oligarchs was dispersed, there would be a noticeable population boom.
My last comment is a critique of Churchill’s quote. It’s a bit much… I’m not an academic scholar of Russia, but I’ve been there and even married a Russian. There’s no riddle, mystery, or enigma. Yes, the essence of Russia is is a complex spectrum of emotions. However, they aren’t the only civilization like that. Russian culture and character can be best explained by reading their literature and poetry, watching Soviet cartoons, and just talking to locals.

To be fair, the whole WW2 thing, how they got involved and why they lost so many people DOES stem from tyranny. Stalin's total disregard of human life was a key factor, and economic recovery wasn't a priority after the war either, as teh USSR spent all the money on the bullshit arms race to occupy other nations which they plundered and pillaged for 40 years, but it still wasn't profitable enough, so a net loss to both the USSR and the occupied countries. So yeah, it is absolutely the fault of the USSR's leadership.

The reason Bangladesh can manage such a big population in small land is
Almost all of the country is covered with the most fertile soil in the world and 700 rivers and additional canals supplying water.
So the cost of growing crops is very low and we usually have three harvest of rice per year.
Besides these 700 river and thousands of canals swarming with fishes shower us with free protein.

But until their leaders understand that uplifting the impoverished & middle class will help to benefit millions instead of the few, people will continue to suffer.
I hope the strong & proud people of Russia will get to a point where they all have better opportunities, higher standards of living & can safely & peacefully raise their families in comfort.

My country: Finland is not as east as Russia, but still a neighbour country. The population here is about 5,5 million and isn't rising fast at all. One reason could be the Winter war and Continuation war. The wars were fought against Soviet union in years 1939-1945 and the later struggle to drive Nazies away from Finland. In the Winter War Finnish people were killed around 25 000 and 43 500 lost. In the Continuation War Finnish people were killed 63 200 or lost. It was huge setback to Finland because there were only 3,6 million people in Finland in 1939. Other one is economical struggle.

It's not just the Great Patriotic War - though that is certainly a major factor. The first half of the 20th century was a very bad time for Russia - losses in the First World War were also very substantial, and it was followed by a long and bloody civil war, and then Stalinist policies of rapid industrialisation that took a heavy toll on the rural population. And then World War 2...
From 1914 to 1945, merely 31 years - a single generation - Russia had lost countless millions, mostly young men who perished in war - and suffered a major blow to the productivity of the agricultural sector. The empire that had been perhaps the greatest exporter of agricultural products throught the 18-th and 19-th centuries was reduced in the 20th century to a reliance on food imports.

    • @JRobbySh

What happened to Russia between 1914 and 1945 was something like what happed to the Holy Roman Empire between 1619-1648. Recovery did not occur until the 19th century. Which is why so many Germans emigrated, including to Russia.

After this story, consider the fact that google calender doesn't recognise Rosh Ashanna, Yom Kippur, or Holocaust Remeberance Day.
All of my great-grandparents, all of whom were russian, served in ww2. There was an incident where in Kiev, where my family lived, a russian women stole my infant grandpa from my great grandmother's hands. The reason for this was to eat him, as there was a huge lack of food. The Jewish part of my family was deported to the frontlines of the fight. Over half of my Jewish side was executed by the Nazis apon occupation, and 2 other people were sent to Auschwitz to be later killed. 3 of my great-grandfathers died in the war. If this story is too much for you to read, then don't bother scrolling further into the comment sections, where there are likely sadder stories of entire families dying.
