Why I'm Moving to New Zealand | A Cinematic Journey

- I was born in California to a mother from the USA and a father from New Zealand. I've had the immense honor of traveling the world making films on the @vagabrothers channel, and in the process seeing over 70+ countries. I've lived in three, the USA in California for the majority of my life, Spain for three years, and New Zealand for a year in 2009.
In my previous video, I share that I'm moving to New Zealand with my wife @CarrieRad and our dog Lanka. Although we're leaving California, this is something we've been planning on doing for a really long time. As a Dual Citizen of both the United States of America and New Zealand, I've always wanted to live a chapter of my life in New Zealand and the time to do that is now.
In this cinematic video, I'm SHOWING YOU WHY, with a collection of my favorite video clips from my 2019 trip to New Zealand. It's going to be a journey, we don't know what's in store, but we're so excited to take you all with us on this adventure of a lifetime.

Cool insight 👍🏼

As a maori thats nearly 30 in feb, im quite proud of what ive achieved in my 20's, lived abroad in 2 different countries and travelled around well over 50 countries and counting.. Tourism NZ should be paying you for this video! It's beautiful! One of the things I love (as a kiwi living in Australia) when you arrive at Auckland international airport is the tunnel of native birdsong you walk through, always makes me feel like I've come home 🥰
I understand completely. Been considering a move to New Zealand. Going to be so nice for you :D
Cheers Stefan!
I just love New Zealand...so much variety, beauty and things to discover. Great spot for me to get away for a week or so...so close being in Australia 😁👍
🙏🏼🙏🏼
I'm kiwi living in central auckland christmas is my favorite time here it's summer beaches bbq families get together xmas presents and sight seeing traveling .welcome to the land of the long white cloud .
Did New Zealand proud with that beautiful video! Thank you ❤️
Welcome home guys. You can be what ever you want to be and do whatever makes your soul happy here. Welcome to our team of five million.
Thank you! We’re so stoked!
I'm so ready. Doing whatever sets our soul on fire.
What an awesome way to showcase "OUR" beautiful country, you're gonna love being back home, especially when you get here in our summer. Good luck to you guys.
@Nathan Cross "OUR" means everyone mate - it has nothing to do with ethnicity,or where you were born. Its about those who live here, and love the place, but it looks like you see it a different way.
@Nathan Cross he said OUR dumbass
That scene where Carrie is in the forest, I hear my favorite, the Tui bird, calling. I am so jealous and wish y’all the very best. I’ve been from the top of the North to the bottom of the South and Stewart Island, and understand why my Kiwi friends call their country “Godzone”. It’s definitely God’s own country. The diversity of people and landscape is remarkable. Looks like you’ve got a new sub here.
Hey Diane! Welcome to the team. We appreciate your kind words and support. I LOVE THE TUI sounds. It’s unreal!
My wife and I are are living our dream here in Canada, in love, 29 yrs today, our anniversary!! Heaps of good luck and best wishes on your next chapter of your lives in New Zealand! 👍🤗👏❤️
Make sure you organise your quarantine vouchers before travelling over here. They are now compulsory for everyone coming into New Zealand, every traveller has to enter controlled quarantine for two weeks, we only have a limited number of hotels dedicated to quarantine of arrivals. No vouchers no entry. There is also no guarantee where in NZ you will be bused too from the airport. You could end up in Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Wellington or Christchurch, so keep that in mind, as you may have to organise your own travel within NZ to get to your final destination. Safe travels and Kia Kaha
yes my sister went back home to nz last month to Auckland and she got flown to Wellington for her quarantine....She said service and food was amazing. At least in Nz its FREE quarantine, unlike Australia grrrr
@@davidlea5912 is it still free?? i thought people have to pay now. RIP nz taxpayer money in that case lol
@@unluggylounge674 You have to pay around $3000 for your quarantine. At first it was free but not anymore
@@TheEtrangeclown yep thats what i thought, the person commented saying last month their sister came and all free but i thought no longer free since couple month back

I always wondered when you and Marko were going to show off NZ to the world. Loved how you showcased it last year and can't wait to see your vids once you make it over here! 🥝
Thank you Georgia!! I appreciate your support
Absolutely stunning footage, and with the move, I'm sure the best is yet to come!
I don't know if I said this on your other vids but as an expat New Zealander I'm so jealous of you. Starting to think seriously of returning home.
Kia Ora Alex! You will love New Zealand. We are a very friendly people and there is alot of amazing places to see and things to do.
I don't want you to go, you became like family to me. I even convinced my fiance to take his first flight because of you guys. (Vegas next Month for our Wedding) Maybe one day, I can come to New Zealand. Because of you and Marco, I took the courage of traveling to Paris and Jamaica solo. And you and Carrie inspired me to TRY to grow a garden next year!!! Best wishes to you both!!!! Always your pal, Ebony from Alabama.
Awww thank you so much Ebony. It makes me happy to hear my videos helped inspire you to step outside your comfort zone and try new things/ travel to new places.
But don’t worry the videos aren’t going anywhere, if anything there will be more content.
@@AlexanderAyling I can't wait!!!
Can never get enough of your arial shots - stunning.

Kia Ora Alex! Very excited for you guys coming to NZ and loving the beautiful content you shot! Makes me want to discover my country even more 😊
Thanks for capturing and sharing the overview of the stunning sceneries in New Zealand.
Thank you!!!! We can't wait to see more.
I love my home. It feels surreal to me that something so beautiful is free for our eyes to view. The air is so fresh, it baptises the lungs. There is no place I’d rather be
So excited for this adventure y’all are going on!!
Thank you Jessica!! It’s a big leap of faith but we’re very excited too
I can understand this young couple in 2020 the world changed some country’s did well with handling the virus some did not we all had to face the new reality. New Zealand for many reasons did well and I feel very privileged and very proud of my countrymen we for the most part showed a level of sanity in all this madness that many did not and I pray every day that it stays that way.
The soundtrack for this video was incredible. Perfect! 💗
Welcome to New Zealand 🇳🇿 😀. From Kaiapoi, Canterbury. NZ.
Pure joy to watch my friend! This is what I am striving for in my videos!
Welcome, welcome! We are an amazing people and land. Arohanui 🌊
Magnificent scenery and country. I started 2019 with two glorious months in New Zealand and cannot wait until it's safe to return. You're fortunate to be a dual national. It is a great place to live.

So I’ve subscribed to your channel and will follow your future life in New Zealand. I’m a kiwi living in Brisbane Australia but have only been here a short time but New Zealand will always be home. I wish you well. I particularly like your shots of Auckland from Little Shoal Bay as I used to live on Northcote Point, a beautiful part of Auckland (aside from morning traffic lol) cheers

Awesome video I love it! Just subscribed. My gf and I been considering a move to to this small piece of paradise on the corner of the world.. Can't wait till this pandemic is over then we to will be planning our move!
We made the move the NZ 2 years ago and never looked back.. this place is a real hidden gem! Currently doing a campervan trip around the whole country and during COVID it’s bare empty, best way to explore the natural beauty! 👌
Alex, congratulations on your desire to move to New Zealand! You and Carrie are young and the opportunities in the horizon are endless! Your video montage is spectacular and the piecing together of all your clips was seamless. I think New Zealand should hire you as their tourism director for tourism guides to New Zealand. We are driving in New Mexico on our way back from a road trip to Louisiana. Got to see the beautiful landscapes in Utah, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Nevada. Finally getting to check this off the bucket list. New Zealand is on our bucket list. Next month, Egypt and Dubai! . Have you been to Egypt? I think you’ve been to Dubai.... looking forward to more videos. Best of luck,. Your traveling friends, Vita Maria & Chuck.
Hello Vita Maria & Chuck! Thanks for the kind words. I haven't been to Egypt but it's way up on my bucket list! Safe travels :)
New Zealand is absolutely gorgeous. Apart from the fact that you are from there I totally get why you’re moving there. So pretty, peaceful and full of nature. I am slightly jealous if I‘m honest😊

Your video is undeniably beautiful. What is nature is is remarkably unique and gorgeous. But as a fellow American also living in New Zealand, I do not share your embrace and generous perspective of the country and it’s Kiwi populace. I have been living here now for nine years and have not found any connection with NZ at all. I moved here for love for someone (of non-Kiwi origin, thankfully!) I met back in California, not for the country. Upon moving here, I enthusiastically sent out CV’s proud of my Silicon Valley-esque qualifications and skills only to be rejected left and right, up and down, due to a lack of “Kiwi experience.” Only later did I realize I was blatantly being discriminated against. In America, we would never ask a Kiwi, “Oh…, do you have any American experience?” Fortunately now I work remotely for an American company, pay American tax, and nothing in NZ tax - HA-HA!
Then there are the Kiwis who I’ve grown very distrustful of with their insincere, cowardly, back-stabbing nature. Not to mention, very boring people. Quite conning, they expect you to spill all your beans about you upon enquiring, but if you ask about them, suddenly they’re authentically offended that you’re attempting to invade their privacy. So much for being honest and social. The other aspect about Kiwis is how disgustingly homogeneous and racist they can be. With the rising influx of Latino, Middle Eastern, and Asian immigrants NZ has had in recent (pre-COVID) years, the disparaging rhetoric amongst huddled Kiwis is inhumane and loathsome, and would make a card-carrying member of the KKK very proud. (Perhaps this explains why many Māoris are incarcerated more so than white Kiwis.) But then they rear a hypocritical face of acceptance and endearment so the rest of a more progressive society does not criticize them.
Thirdly, there is their insipid “cuisine.” Never have I overpaid for under-served, underwhelming, tasteless meal portions as I have in NZ. It’s no wonder I only cook at home. It certainly makes me miss the immense and great abundance served to us in United States cafes and restaurants, which also makes me proud to give those folks a generous tip. Sure, NZ has enviably accessible healthcare, clean water system, fresh air environment, pristine coasts, but then again, so does my native West Coast in North America. I find it a shame that a country that attempts to project itself as a progressive, accepting nation has exposed its more disheartening, unpleasant, and yes, absolute unfavorable truth to me.
Congratulations 🎉 man I actually wanna move to Ireland someday since I am Irish good luck on your new adventures
I’ve been wanting to move to NZ myself. It would be awesome if you talked about the process, visas, qualifications etc.
Probably have to wait until our government lift the border up for international students...at this moment not easy getting into NZ with Covid19 happening
You can look at nz government website there are ways to enter but for now only citizens and residents can come but getting your paperwork done now will get you in when Borders open
It's easy tbh just don't give up try your best to go through all the steps of doing it they will welcome you in my kiwiland if you follow your heart and do it slowly but 100%sure it's easy
As COVID will be still around you will have to register for quarantine before you leave the USA
@@fosiolui5815 Not anymore,,to many people lied on their, application's,,so there was a big change, NZ is now,one of the hardest country's to get to,,and expensive as well,,
But look up on the, immigration NZ website,, they will have all the, updates,,
Gorgeous Video! It's so pretty there, also what music are you using in the video of you don't mind me asking?👌👌 Fab!!
You will love it so much
Check out the Wairarapa! It’s an absolute gem, and close to Wellington if you need a city fix👌 House prices are much better than the larger centers too.
Even though I live in Auckland and you'll be further south when you get here if you have a question on where to get a certain thing that you might miss from the USA. There is a store here that imports a lot of the classic American products like cereals, drinks, candy bars, and even corn tortillas and salsas.
Marthas backyard And the do online too. My wife is from MI, came over 21 years ago and never went home.
I just got to say. A very welcome to Nz.
Thank you!
Wow glad to see you enjoyed our country, like any country we have our good parts and the bad parts , but it is home and I hope you can one day call it yours, good luck and welcome.
Hey you two lovely people! C'mon over for some roast lamb and decent pinot next time you're in Alexandra, Central Otago and bring Lanka to meet our dog Ivy. I have a feeling you might really like it down here - truly the primo end of the country!! Good luck with the relocation - not too long to go now. ♥♥♥
Wishing you all the best in your move! I went to California last year and loved the hype and theme parks but it took a while getting used to seeing so much homelessness and dirty streets - we don’t seem to have it to the same extent here in NZ. In fact our government put all the homeless into hotels during our lockdown period approx 4 weeks. I’m curious if your partner has a special visa into NZ as our country is effectively shut off to all non-kiwis? Will be great to start having more people come through 😊
It's already November! (I'm playing catch up) You'll be heading over here so soon, how has this year flown by so quickly and also been the longest year? haha! Hopefully your iso goes smoothly and then you can head out and adventure!
Could you do a video explaining the process of making such a large move? i.e. a breakdown of the costs, shipping etc. Keep up the great content! 👍🏻
Hey François! Yes I’ll be making a video like that coming up soon once we get more headway made and have a clearer idea of exactly what is involved.

Heya Dean!
@@AlexanderAyling Hi Alex , I have just found your channel and love it , i am from Christchurch NZ I hope you like it there !!
You obviously had a reasonably look around during your two weeks, based on that trip have you decided were you would like to base yourself? My partner and I did a two week visit in April 2007, before moving to Christchurch in October 2009. We felt the traffic around Auckland was as busy as the UK and we would prefer something a little quieter.
