HI Alex. Another beautiful video. I started following you when you arrived in NZ. I am feeling tired living in Auckland. I love the city but really miss the sound of water, wind and birds. All I hear is construction, and lockdown does not make it easier. The more I watch your videos, the more I have this need to escape the city. I have decided to buy land in Huia (about 40 min from the CBD) and build a container house. I had it in mind for a few years, but watching both of you + the dog and the sheep inspired me so much. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Ka kite anō
I would like to acknowledge the work your wheelbarrow has done since moving to the property. Definitely the under-appreciated star of your videos. I am really enjoying this content. Keep up the good work. 👍
It would be cool if you uploaded a 30 min video of just the nature sounds on your property. No talking, no music overlay. Just the native birds, the water and breeze. We can lay in our living rooms and listen to the stillness of NZ ❤️
Love this video Alex! Sooo great to hear your chat under the fruit free. I couldn't agree more. After years of traveling full time, these next few months feel like we're in limbo as we're making our way down to Costa Rica and I cannot waittt to put down roots there are you two are doing in NZ. Missing you both, can't wait to visit each other's homes and veggie gardens 😍
Hey Raya! I know you guys understand too. Wishing you both the best in your journey too. Can’t wait to visit in Costa Rica one day. Limbo sucks but it’s part of it 🙏🏼
We are rural as well and I can honestly say your appreciation of what you have has made me appreciate what I have even more. I didnt realise how bogged down in the work I felt and that I was allowing it to eat a little of my love for where I live. I may even get the garden back into shape this spring :D Thanks for the inspiration and lesson in gratitude
Thank God that there are people in the world like you Alex and Carrie. You have shown what is possible when you follow your dreams and vision. Alex, your photography is so outstanding and beautiful and accurately shows the bucolic beauty that surrounds you. Moving to New Zealand is now on my bucket list because of you and your incredible odyssey in the country. Unfortunately, I probably won't make it there because I am 78 yr old and living on a fixed income but you have made it possible for me to visit the country vicariously through your incredible vlog. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I live in an island in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico) in the country side and im minutes away from the beach. I get/feel what you’re saying 100%. Feeling, smelling the salt water, the fertile soil, the wind and my people. I wouldn’t change living in PR for anything in the world. PURE BLISS. We are one. One with nature.
I’ve been to about 30 countries around the world and I’ve found none more beautifully diverse than New Zealand. Thank you for sharing your videos. I long for the day I can return. ❤️🇳🇿
Wonderful video Alex, the vibe of you and Carrie's videos lately remind of the quote by Claude Monet "My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly in a corner of nature" Thank you for sharing your beautiful corner of nature with us.
Hi Alex, first time to click on your videos today, July 31, 2022. They are splendid sharing of your life journey with your wife Carrie. Your thoughts about life that should be free of burdensome activities of modern living strike a similar chord in my heart. Yes, you have chosen the best things in life. Also, the real and permanent freedom in life is to have JESUS in our lives. He says, "Peace I give you, peace I leave you; not as the world gives, give I to you." God bless and protect your marriage which I pray should be "till death do us part" with Carrie. Thank you so much for the videos. I really love New Zealand. I am from the tropical country of the Philippines.

Orchard Philosophy made me cry (in a good way). Your films are so beautiful, I felt very peaceful and contemplative after this one. Thank you for all the effort that no doubt must go into each one. ✌
Awww thank you Helen - this place makes me think and feel a lot more and it’s nice knowing that it speaks to you too. Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment
Got to say there is great effort required to keep the momentum going to get your garden completed.☑️ From where it was, to where it is now in such a short time, plus the inside reno's, it's a mammoth task requiring mammoth energy, effort, resilience, and perseverance. I have a lot of respect for you two. Just loving how the garden looks and if Carrie gets her way with the arch at the entrance etc.. it'll look Mediterranean. Glad you've gotten around to slipping in the philosophical stuff, your in a perfect place and time to be doing that and it also demonstrates how appreciative you are of your world around you, which helps others to be so, of theirs. Love the little connections you make with the Lanka and Wool-son during your work. They are such love giving little sweeties. Thank you for a beautiful start to my weekend 🐕🐑🤠👩🌾
Hello Elah - thank you so much for this comment. It means a lot to read this after all the hard work. If you like the orchard talks, stay tuned because I’ve got some more coming. It’s nice to be able to speak about stuff more openly now. All the best, catch you next weekend!
Labour weekend is the day a lot of gardens get planted up so you are well on track. Stake those tomatoes with sturdy tall stakes so they don't get damaged by the wind
Hi Alex- I really appreciate this video so much and needed it today. Living in a city, the essence of nature that is lacking is so palpable and can create a sense of loneliness and longing. I look forward to one day having nature in abundance again, and in the meantime appreciate watching your and Carrie's videos to remind me of the simple things. Can't wait to see the garden come together even more!:)
Hi, Enjoyed your orchard thoughts. Grew up on a farm and it is a great start in life. Teaches you that death is part of life and also the satisfaction of a hard day's work. Physical labour tires you out in a very different way to work inside. Outside and moving is my happy place. We have a little wild section now and pottering around pulling out weeds and digging out blackberry makes me really happy. Sounds crazy but eating a sandwich outside after weeding, listening to the tuis and the water is my perfect weekend activity :) My 30 year old wandering self would never have seen that coming.
Thanks Maria - I really just started publishing here this year so it takes time. My other channel Vagabrothers hit one million. Maybe in time this one will too 👍🏽
Hey Alex what an awesome opening to this video! I love how you and Carrie are truly adapting to your new lifestyle. Sorry I haven’t been commented lately however, I’m quite a few videos behind. Awesome video, awesome to follow along .... i'm a kiwi living in Hong Kong and watching what you're both doing makes me miss home and the peaceful NZ life... keep up the great work.
You've been collecting kelp, seaweed is generally viewed as the green lettuce that tangles round your fishing line when fishing. Put some of that lovely kelp into a taped barrel and add some water, it will become a concentrate which you can water down and use as a systemic spray over the foliage- early morning or evening You'll have to re-stake your tomatoes, better now than later as putting in a large stake later can damage the root system. Cane, plastic coated rod or untreated wooden stakes) It will also allow you to tie them off easier as they grow in height, (stay clear of the narrow plastic coated wire ties - they will cut into the stem) don't forget to pick out the laterals as they grow (between the main stem and the leaf), will allow for better fruit and cropping. Perhaps in another month do a repeat planting on tomatoes, lettuce. Time to put in your cucumber etc and a few pumpkins in an unused corner of your section. "Gardening is the slowest form of performing arts". Nothing like making your way into the garden and filling up the basket with fresh veges.
I’m so happy for you guys. I’ve been watching for years and using your videos as travel guides and self care inspiration! What an amazing life you’ve manifested! Congratulations!!
A wonderful vlog today and one which made me just a little homesick. I can’t wait to get back to my little corner of paradise in the Wairarapa. I’ve been in Auckland since just before lockdown helping out my daughter who had returned from the UK with her baby. Her husband arrived in the country 9 days ago along with their dog so tomorrow we pick up George from quarantine and then her husband gets out of MIQ on Friday. Hopefully I will leave for home next Monday - double vaccinated, proof of where I live and a negative COVID test to get through the AKL and Waikato borders!
Such a beautiful video Alex, your content is one of a kind. I got a little teary-eyed hearing you speak about life under the fruit tree Living in the moment is such a beautiful experience. I'm so happy for all of the progress you and Carrie have made! Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next video!
Another amazing episode. We are counting down the days on the settlement of our own homestead at the moment. Watching your videos is just ramping up the excitement even more! Cant wait!
I think I need to start watching Carrie’s videos after yours because I saw some stuff in this video I swore you both had already done. Then I realized I was watching hers last… 🙃 We are planning/dreaming of buying property and building a passive house and I want to have a garden like this. It’s a lot of work but it brings so much joy and stress relief getting your hands dirty.
Loving the gardens people🔥👍🏼You have come into your own with the whole kiwiana sustainable living thing rite? Love the foraging seaweed and yes that look like a good day for surfing but there’s heaps of days ahead for that.there’s an old advertisement here that used to say “ do the mahi (work) get the treat” which the two of you will defo be awarded with in the coming months.Anyhu keep up the good work team, yal is so inspirational.
This series gives me so much joy. I love your and carrie's videos, shows two different perspectives and different video styles, but both so good, such great quality, life giving and entertaining. Cant wait to see the journey continue! Makes me move back to New Zealand!! I used to live in Wellington. Such a gem of a town in this world.
If little orchard chats became a new segment in your videos when you wanted to, I would be ALL FOR IT , LOVED that part :) Amazing video Alex! Sending love and the garden looks fantastic!!!!!💛✌
This is great to hear Miranda. More orchard talks will happen for sure. Feels good to speak from the heart and that it resonates. Thank you for watching, commenting and supporting 🙏🏼
Thank you Ben! I loved Ashburton, we drove through on our South Island roadie last summer. Tried fishing for salmon in the Rakaia but only had one hour on one afternoon. Would love to come back and explore more. Beautiful area
My grandad helped build the Mt Hutt complex. But politics was erased from most history books. He was a bit of a prick, just saying. Such a good area of NZ
I just can’t begin to explain how happy you both make me. To watch you grow into your dream is beautiful. Thank you for sharing your lovely life, Alex, Carrie, Lanka & Woolsen… 🥰
There is something so peaceful and magical when I watch your videos, your narration and story telling so tells an amazing journey as we follow yours and Carrie’s journey bringing your gorgeous place to life. I’m always looking forward to the next one…🔥 🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
WOWWW!!! The beginning of this video is so beautiful and relaxing and your voice Alex is soothing just like the views you're so lucky to get out of California it's like another world where you are no pollution no traffic no hustle and bustle and craziness...ahhhhh
Thank you Alex for this great video. Love the beach side, makes me feel I belong to the nature 🏞️🌏💖 and your garden is completely beautiful 🥰 Your experience in gardening is all worth it. You will have an amazing produce once its ready to be harvested 🌱🌿 A simple but beutiful family, loving pets, amazing place, what can you ask for? It is really a dream place that you can really call 'HOME' 🏡💖🇳🇿
Thank you for the nature shots and sounds again. Garden looks great! I got to say the aerial shots are amazing. Thanks for putting those in there so we get the big picture figuratively and literally.
Thanks for showing us some more of the beauty of NZ and your patch of it. This video has definitely inspired me to get outside this weekend, breathe in nature and find some calm 👍
Hi Alex! I've been following you for years, I've watched every single travel blog videos from your vagabrother channel. It's so good to get a more personal insight into your life and Carrie's now. I've been enjoying your videos so much, thank you for putting so much effort and energy into creating these. On a more technical note, I'm watching your videos on my tv plugged on KRK speakers, which are more sensitive than most at home setups. This has been going on for a few videos, but I wanted to catch up to the most recent one to make sure it was still an issue, which I just finished. I'm commenting on this older one because you might be able to hear it too around 16:00, it sounds like I have tinnitus. I've made sure it wasn't my speakers and it only happens in a few scenes and my phone can also pick it up on speakers. Less and less with newer videos, but I thought u'd appreciate to know this. It's probably an easy fix on your side when editing. Keep up the good work, looking forward to these sanded floors!
Your reflections about your days of busy travel was so interesting to hear. For many, that's the "ideal" kind of life, so it was really insightful and inspiring to hear you talk about your journey and the simple joys in life. I'm so grateful that you and Carrie are putting out content that really helps counterbalance "hustle culture", the idea of chasing dreams at all costs, and striving for "ideal" lives that society pushes us to live, even when it might not be what we truly want. Recently, every time I finish watching you/Carrie's vlogs, I feel so rejuvenated. Also, Woolson is growing up so fast!! Its incredible to see his growth alongside the progress made on the homestead. Amazing work and looking forward to your updates!! Hope yall are doing well!
Aww Claire!! This is so nice to read. We both really appreciate hearing this. But we are chasing our dreams right now - our dream was to live somewhere peaceful, grow as much of our own food as possible and keep sharing things that inspire us. I agree that the hustle culture - success and money at all/ any costs is toxic when it’s the only thing that drives someone, often times we’re finding the richest people in the world are often unhappy. I guess it’s about finding what fulfills you and going for that. You know?
@@AlexanderAyling I suppose what I mean instead is that your reflections provide a sense of ease knowing that we can always change our trajectories in life and can take the time to live slowly and appreciate the moment, rather than rushing to reach a goal, if that makes any sense! Hope you are all doing well! :)
This was my favorite part seeing you being Emotional and its really touched my heart, love you. Planning to come to new Zealand, will contact you when I arrive. Peace. 🙏😍
Hi guys, I love your feeds a lot! Thanks! I think you guys and us have many things in common, so we feel things the same way in this beautiful country NZ, try and error. We lived in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hawaii, LA, and then NZ with lovely family including dogs and surfing life. Your plumbing work fail was very awesome! hahaha. Enjoy your life in NZ, I look forward to more fun of yours. Cheers,
Thank you Daisuke!! I loved Japan but only visited Okinawa and Tokyo. I’ve always wanted to travel in rural Japan and in the mountains. It looks so peaceful
Love the birdsong, surprised to see the parrot, don't see them in Christchurch. If you collect the fallen/dried cabbage tree leaves and tie them in small handful bundles, they make great fire starters and if you add your rosemary, lavender, laurel and citrus prunings, they smell really nice.
The garden looks amazing! I've thought about getting seaweed from the ocean for our garden, but I've always just bought seasol from the store. Might have to try actual seaweed for ourselves next time we're in the garden :D
Absolutely love what you are doing with your gardens...such a beautiful spot. Also, my son came in and was watching with me (he is 7) and said, "wow, what beautiful people" .... thought I would share, it is always lovely to hear good things from people
What a great spot you both have and i agree it's a beautiful way to wake up indeed makes me miss the country. I'm learning , about how to prepare a no dig garden while watching your journey. As usual another great video, It also makes me miss the Wairarapa a little. Born and raised in Masterton. When I decided I needed a fresh start I came to Central Hawkes Bay and was renting a house in the country, a 30 minute drive to town so watching your videos make me miss that kind of living Definitely makes me want to go back to the country living in the future.
Have you guys considered starting a worm farm yet. Seaweed & coffee grounds are supa foods for worms. Non meat or dairy kitchen scraps +paper can also be added. If you can find an old bath tub and sit it on blocks with the drain hole slightly lower to allow worm tea to drain into a container. This precious liquid, when diluted is a massive boost fertiliser.
Owning a trailer is a very kiwi thing to do! Do it! We bought one from 'Trayla' in Levin. They make them on-site, so all kiwi-made. Great quality, they can even arrange a custom-made cover for it.
My grandparents live in masterton and have a beach house near castle point that they go out to every weekend that we love because they it’s also like a mini farm! My dad grew up in the wairarapa and we live in Singapore now (I’m 16), we were back in December and January from AUS visiting around the Wairarapa seeing friends and family after doing MIQ in November and visiting around the country for a couple of months before moving here. It’s great seeing your videos and vlogs they remind me of home, keep it up!
I'm really enjoying watching how much the two of you are achieving in your little piece of paradise. Your garden looks amazing! So much hard work. Now that the weather is improving we are getting ready to plant our own small vege garden down here in the South Island. Happy gardening.😁

Hi Alex and Carrie , again love your guys video's always so positive and to be honest at times very humorous . two tips for you Alex , first , never let that lady go , you got a real good one there mate lol , second is if you want a good organic bug spray for the garden take 6 garlic cloves and a chilli pepper blend and stain , add a small drizzle of dishwashing liquid to a 1 litre spray bottle top up with water . This works so well against most bugs , the dishwash just helps it stay on the on the plants , keep up the great work guys .

I’m so happy for you guys. I’ve been watching for years and using your videos as travel guides and self care inspiration! What an amazing life you’ve manifested! Congratulations!!
Thank you for the years of support - we couldn’t have done it without you
Wow what a transformation! Loved the 80s power song 🎵
Thank you! 80s tunes help get the work done haha
Can I suggest you put a tall stake in with your tomatoes. You won't disturb the roots if you do it at planting. Love you guys.
Yeah you’re not the first person to suggest it. We will do it for sure.
Thank you so much 😊
Loved the nature doco styled intro! You have the voice for it when you choose, and the words!
Another amazing episode. We are counting down the days on the settlement of our own homestead at the moment. Watching your videos is just ramping up the excitement even more! Cant wait!
Awesome! Wishing you both all the best
What a beautiful sound to wake up to Alex. Awww, Lanka and Woolston are so cute, the garden looks amazing Alex ♥️
It’s really peaceful. Thanks for watching, stay tuned for next weekends episode because it’s crazy!
I hope you find your dream property soon Heather. Until then we will see you in the comments of both of our videos. Much love
Thank you Samuel! I’ve heard that phrase before - we’re currently doing the mahi haha
Thank you Victoria - we really appreciate your support. Love Wellington!
You and Carrie are incredible! I love each part of the Homestead renovation and your garden will be amazing!
Awww thank you Cinthya ❤️
If little orchard chats became a new segment in your videos when you wanted to, I would be ALL FOR IT , LOVED that part :) Amazing video Alex! Sending love and the garden looks fantastic!!!!!💛✌
This is great to hear Miranda. More orchard talks will happen for sure. Feels good to speak from the heart and that it resonates. Thank you for watching, commenting and supporting 🙏🏼
Lanka is such a good big brother to Woolson. Love seeing the 2 of them together.
He’s really chill with him - even when Woolson rams him haha
@@AlexanderAyling Haha classic! Wonder what the future holds when Woolson dwarfs Lanka.
That was a beautiful Intro. Made me want to move to the country.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I love your videos and enjoying the process of renovating ur homestead
Thank you!!
Hi Alex, your homestead is so beautiful😍 Love your Videos
Thank you Steffi 🙏🏼🙏🏼
You know I’m in Ashburton and the one thing I miss about level 4 is the silence. Love ur eye on our country. Aren’t we lucky ❤️
Aww thank you Julianna - it brings us joy to hear this
There is something so peaceful and magical when I watch your videos, your narration and story telling so tells an amazing journey as we follow yours and Carrie’s journey bringing your gorgeous place to life. I’m always looking forward to the next one…🔥 🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Patsy. Really appreciate it
WOWWW!!! The beginning of this video is so beautiful and relaxing and your voice Alex is soothing just like the views you're so lucky to get out of California it's like another world where you are no pollution no traffic no hustle and bustle and craziness...ahhhhh
Thank you Angela! We feel grateful to be down here. That being said there are so many beautiful places in California, you just gotta get out there
@@AlexanderAyling your very welcome my friend...yess beautiful places but you're in such a quiet soothing place NZ😊
Thank you Alex for this great video.
Love the beach side, makes me feel
I belong to the nature 🏞️🌏💖
and your garden is completely beautiful 🥰
Your experience in gardening is all worth it. You will have an amazing produce once its ready to be harvested 🌱🌿
A simple but beutiful family, loving pets, amazing place, what can you ask for?
It is really a dream place that you can really call 'HOME' 🏡💖🇳🇿
Couldn’t agree more Nikki - I’d say it was complete if only what happened yesterday didn’t…. Stay tuned for next week’s episode!
Clean up crew! 💖💖
Thank you for the nature shots and sounds again. Garden looks great! I got to say the aerial shots are amazing. Thanks for putting those in there so we get the big picture figuratively and literally.
Of course! I love adding the perspective. Thanks for watching Karina 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for showing us some more of the beauty of NZ and your patch of it. This video has definitely inspired me to get outside this weekend, breathe in nature and find some calm 👍
Awesome! Hope you enjoy the weekend :)!
Awesome vid as usual alex.all you need now is a hearty ute chuck the board and dog on the back booya cusher!!😁
Yeah! I love our Fortuner - it’s got such great 4x4 capabilities and is comfy on the road. Probably going to end up getting a trailer
Nice..
Looks fantastic 💚💚💚
Thank you Lisa 🙏🏼
Your vlogs make my week 💫🙏☁️ thank you for sharing the beautiful journey!!!
Aww thank you Clea that is so nice to hear. Thanks for tuning in and joining each weekend
Good morning, I've been looking forward to another video!!
Awesome!! Welcome back 🙏🏼
Cool video bro, that first clip of the beach I could of sworn you were in Hawaii🤣take care guys
We are in Polynesia!! Just the southernmost island chain :)
This was my favorite part seeing you being Emotional and its really touched my heart, love you. Planning to come to new Zealand, will contact you when I arrive. Peace. 🙏😍
This is so nice Alex. Love your place, the yard, the scenery is stunning, and the garden looks amazing. Can't wait to see your harvests.
Thanks Jorge!! Garden is starting to grow nicely
Let me know if you need information about Japan. Thanks for reply.
I look forward to new videos from you and Carrie each week. So inspiring, peaceful, and grounding. Thank you for sharing your journey! 🌱
Thank you Lauren! I see you here each week and really appreciate your continued support
Enjoying it all but particularly grateful for the birdsong 🙏🏽💕💕
Isn’t it lovely?
Love the birdsong, surprised to see the parrot, don't see them in Christchurch. If you collect the fallen/dried cabbage tree leaves and tie them in small handful bundles, they make great fire starters and if you add your rosemary, lavender, laurel and citrus prunings, they smell really nice.
That sounds awesome! I’ll definitely do that :)
The garden looks amazing! I've thought about getting seaweed from the ocean for our garden, but I've always just bought seasol from the store. Might have to try actual seaweed for ourselves next time we're in the garden :D
Garden looks great! The hard work really shows.
Thank you Melinda 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Absolutely love what you are doing with your gardens...such a beautiful spot. Also, my son came in and was watching with me (he is 7) and said, "wow, what beautiful people" .... thought I would share, it is always lovely to hear good things from people
Awww thank you both. Sending love ❤️
What a great spot you both have and i agree it's a beautiful way to wake up indeed makes me miss the country.
I'm learning , about how to prepare a no dig garden while watching your journey.
As usual another great video, It also makes me miss the Wairarapa a little.
Born and raised in Masterton.
When I decided I needed a fresh start I came to Central Hawkes Bay and was renting a house in the country, a 30 minute drive to town so watching your videos make me miss that kind of living
Definitely makes me want to go back to the country living in the future.
Thank you Angela - central HB is gorgeous too
Thank you Angela - central HB is gorgeous too
Have you guys considered starting a worm farm yet.
Thanks for the tip Barry! It’s on the list for sure!
Great job to you both! Loving the content and motivation!!💫
Thank you Pamela! We appreciate the kind words! See you next weekend
Owning a trailer is a very kiwi thing to do! Do it! We bought one from 'Trayla' in Levin. They make them on-site, so all kiwi-made. Great quality, they can even arrange a custom-made cover for it.
Thanks Phil! I’ll look into it
My grandparents live in masterton and have a beach house near castle point that they go out to every weekend that we love because they it’s also like a mini farm!
Hey Matt!! Castlepoint is a magic spot for sure! Hope you can make it back to NZ soon. Singapore is a chill city. Hawkers Markets are fun!
I loved this video so much!!!! The footage is amazing!! And your garden looks beautiful, you should be very proud of yourself
Thank you Tania - we appreciate the kind words
I'm really enjoying watching how much the two of you are achieving in your little piece of paradise. Your garden looks amazing! So much hard work. Now that the weather is improving we are getting ready to plant our own small vege garden down here in the South Island. Happy gardening.😁
tomatoes originated from the americas, specifically the Andes. Great garden! What a change from what y’all started with
This video is a real gift. You've given me a shot to the arm of the blue and green, and songlines, I'm craving. Thank you, Alex, very much!
Great video!!so beautiful there. So happy for you❤️your heartfelt words were so beautiful and real and I cried hearing it..I can so relate to your past experiences and what you sought out with your beautiful wife,it's beyond gorgeous there
Awww Maria this is so amazing to read. The fact that my video and words brought tears to your eyes makes my heart burst with emotion. Thank you.
Wow❤❤
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Absolutely beautiful, you two ✌🏽 you've done an amazing job on your homestead it is gorgeous, your garden is spectacular, it's everything you could ever imagine and more 🐑🦜🦉🐦🌅 and the surf🏄🏽♂️ is just around the bend, Lol, Lanka wants to be a sheep dog, he's teaching himself to hypnotize the Rams 👀 nahh just joking 😂
Thanks James! Tip 1 - I’m way ahead of you buddy. Tip 2 - great advice we will give it a shot
Alex and Carrie the garden looks amazing saw it also on Carrie's video ....Both of you are fantastic
Thank you Effie 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
