  • It's spring here in New Zealand and it's time to start building our organic No-Dig vegetable garden on our Homestead Lifestyle Block. While no-dig gardening sounds easy, and once you get set up it is, the process of building your garden beds requires a few interesting ingredients and a bit of time.
    ---
    Join me and my wife ‪@CarrieRad‬ as we change the garden beds on our homestead property by building our organic soil oasis one layer at a time and transform the old, overgrown garden into something beautiful and productive.
    ---
    HUGE THANKS TO Little Farms NZ for teaching us more about the No-Dig Gardening method.

    I'm Alex, I'm a travel filmmaker, photographer, and TV host. In January of 2021, I moved to New Zealand with my wife to find land and a home in the countryside. On this channel, I'll share some of my journey renovating our old homestead property as well as travel guides, motivational and inspirational videos from lessons I've learned during my life, and cooking recipes from international cuisine using vegetables grown in my home garden. Hopefully, my videos will help you learn new skills, find happiness, inspire exploration, and grow your creativity. Stay tuned friends!

    HI Alex. Another beautiful video. I started following you when you arrived in NZ. I am feeling tired living in Auckland. I love the city but really miss the sound of water, wind and birds. All I hear is construction, and lockdown does not make it easier. The more I watch your videos, the more I have this need to escape the city. I have decided to buy land in Huia (about 40 min from the CBD) and build a container house. I had it in mind for a few years, but watching both of you + the dog and the sheep inspired me so much. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Ka kite anō

    Love this video Alex! Sooo great to hear your chat under the fruit free. I couldn't agree more. After years of traveling full time, these next few months feel like we're in limbo as we're making our way down to Costa Rica and I cannot waittt to put down roots there are you two are doing in NZ. Missing you both, can't wait to visit each other's homes and veggie gardens 😍

    We are rural as well and I can honestly say your appreciation of what you have has made me appreciate what I have even more. I didnt realise how bogged down in the work I felt and that I was allowing it to eat a little of my love for where I live. I may even get the garden back into shape this spring :D Thanks for the inspiration and lesson in gratitude

    You've been collecting kelp, seaweed is generally viewed as the green lettuce that tangles round your fishing line when fishing. Put some of that lovely kelp into a taped barrel and add some water, it will become a concentrate which you can water down and use as a systemic spray over the foliage- early morning or evening You'll have to re-stake your tomatoes, better now than later as putting in a large stake later can damage the root system. Cane, plastic coated rod or untreated wooden stakes) It will also allow you to tie them off easier as they grow in height, (stay clear of the narrow plastic coated wire ties - they will cut into the stem) don't forget to pick out the laterals as they grow (between the main stem and the leaf), will allow for better fruit and cropping. Perhaps in another month do a repeat planting on tomatoes, lettuce. Time to put in your cucumber etc and a few pumpkins in an unused corner of your section. "Gardening is the slowest form of performing arts". Nothing like making your way into the garden and filling up the basket with fresh veges.

    Got to say there is great effort required to keep the momentum going to get your garden completed.☑️ From where it was, to where it is now in such a short time, plus the inside reno's, it's a mammoth task requiring mammoth energy, effort, resilience, and perseverance. I have a lot of respect for you two. Just loving how the garden looks and if Carrie gets her way with the arch at the entrance etc.. it'll look Mediterranean. Glad you've gotten around to slipping in the philosophical stuff, your in a perfect place and time to be doing that and it also demonstrates how appreciative you are of your world around you, which helps others to be so, of theirs. Love the little connections you make with the Lanka and Wool-son during your work. They are such love giving little sweeties. Thank you for a beautiful start to my weekend 🐕🐑🤠👩‍🌾

    My grandparents live in masterton and have a beach house near castle point that they go out to every weekend that we love because they it’s also like a mini farm! My dad grew up in the wairarapa and we live in Singapore now (I’m 16), we were back in December and January from AUS visiting around the Wairarapa seeing friends and family after doing MIQ in November and visiting around the country for a couple of months before moving here. It’s great seeing your videos and vlogs they remind me of home, keep it up!

    Have you guys considered starting a worm farm yet. Seaweed & coffee grounds are supa foods for worms. Non meat or dairy kitchen scraps +paper can also be added. If you can find an old bath tub and sit it on blocks with the drain hole slightly lower to allow worm tea to drain into a container. This precious liquid,when diluted is a massive boost fertiliser.

    Hi Alex, first time to click on your videos today, July 31, 2022. They are splendid sharing of your life journey with your wife Carrie. Your thoughts about life that should be free of burdensome activities of modern living strike a similar chord in my heart. Yes, you have chosen the best things in life. Also, the real and permanent freedom in life is to have JESUS in our lives. He says, "Peace I give you, peace I leave you; not as the world gives, give I to you."
    God bless and protect your marriage which I pray should be "till death do us part" with Carrie. Thank you so much for the videos. I really love New Zealand. I am from the tropical country of the Philippines.

I'm not sure if others have mentioned but something in your filming or audio setup puts off a high pitched frequency that makes it really uncomfortable to watch/listen to your content. A wonderful vlog today and one which made me just a little homesick. I can’t wait to get back to my little corner of paradise in the Wairarapa. I’ve been in Auckland since just before lockdown helping out my daughter who had returned from the UK with her baby. Her husband arrived in the country 9 days ago along with their dog so tomorrow we pick up George from quarantine and then her husband gets out of MIQ on Friday. Hopefully I will leave for home next Monday - double vaccinated, proof of where I live and a negative COVID test to get through the AKL and Waikato borders!

    Hi Alex! I've been following you for years, I've watched every single travel blog videos from your vagabrother channel. It's so good to get a more personal insight into your life and Carrie's now. I've been enjoying your videos so much, thank you for putting so much effort and energy into creating these.
    On a more technical note, I'm watching your videos on my tv plugged on KRK speakers, which are more sensitive than most at home setups. This has been going on for a few videos, but I wanted to catch up to the most recent one to make sure it was still an issue, which I just finished. I'm commenting on this older one because you might be able to hear it too around 16:00, it sounds like I have tinnitus. I've made sure it wasn't my speakers and it only happens in a few scenes and my phone can also pick it up on speakers. Less and less with newer videos, but I thought u'd appreciate to know this. It's probably an easy fix on your side when editing.
    Keep up the good work, looking forward to these sanded floors!

    Hi, Enjoyed your orchard thoughts. Grew up on a farm and it is a great start in life. Teaches you that death is part of life and also the satisfaction of a hard day's work. Physical labour tires you out in a very different way to work inside. Outside and moving is my happy place. We have a little wild section now and pottering around pulling out weeds and digging out blackberry makes me really happy. Sounds crazy but eating a sandwich outside after weeding, listening to the tuis and the water is my perfect weekend activity :) My 30 year old wandering self would never have seen that coming.

    I just remembered a lovely unique New Zealand fruit tree that should grow well in your area. Unfortunately to American ears it is a very very politically incorrect fruit. It is a Black Boy Peach. The Skin and flesh are dark red and the taste reminiscent of a blood orange. Also my favourite if you have a North facing wall a Passion Fruit Vine. It has about a ten year life span and scooping passion fruit on to ice cream, cereal, or eating straight is close to heaven. Did you know that Passion Fruit was banned in the U.S.A. In the 1950s because a Senator was convinced that with its name it had to be an aphrodisiac and kept putting riders in bills until it was banned.

    Your reflections about your days of busy travel was so interesting to hear. For many, that's the "ideal" kind of life, so it was really insightful and inspiring to hear you talk about your journey and the simple joys in life. I'm so grateful that you and Carrie are putting out content that really helps counterbalance "hustle culture", the idea of chasing dreams at all costs, and striving for "ideal" lives that society pushes us to live, even when it might not be what we truly want. Recently, every time I finish watching you/Carrie's vlogs, I feel so rejuvenated.
    Also, Woolson is growing up so fast!! Its incredible to see his growth alongside the progress made on the homestead. Amazing work and looking forward to your updates!! Hope yall are doing well!

      Aww Claire!! This is so nice to read. We both really appreciate hearing this.
      But we are chasing our dreams right now - our dream was to live somewhere peaceful, grow as much of our own food as possible and keep sharing things that inspire us.
      I agree that the hustle culture - success and money at all/ any costs is toxic when it’s the only thing that drives someone, often times we’re finding the richest people in the world are often unhappy.
      I guess it’s about finding what fulfills you and going for that. You know?

    • @clairyairy
      @clairyairy 3 роки тому

      @@AlexanderAyling I suppose what I mean instead is that your reflections provide a sense of ease knowing that we can always change our trajectories in life and can take the time to live slowly and appreciate the moment, rather than rushing to reach a goal, if that makes any sense! Hope you are all doing well! :)

    Next time, take a roll of plastic rubbish bags, it makes collecting seaweed easier, just stuff the bags full, and throw them in the trailer.

  • @paulmara2695
    @paulmara2695 3 роки тому +4

    Best to get wet "fresh" seaweed close to the shore rather than dried out seawed in the dunes. Dried out seaweed is often been sitting there for a LONG time and the nutrients would have been "washed" or dried out. Also wet / fresh seaweed composts better and helps to release the nutrients better into the soil

    Hi Alex and Carrie , again love your guys video's always so positive and to be honest at times very humorous . two tips for you Alex , first , never let that lady go , you got a real good one there mate lol , second is if you want a good organic bug spray for the garden take 6 garlic cloves and a chilli pepper blend and stain , add a small drizzle of dishwashing liquid to a 1 litre spray bottle top up with water . This works so well against most bugs , the dishwash just helps it stay on the on the plants , keep up the great work guys .
