Whether it is just for a couple of years or for a longer period you will not regret spending time living in NZ. My partner and I decided to emigrate after visiting Australia in 2001, and finally moved to NZ in '09. Haven't regretted taking the plunge and if anything wish we had done it sooner. Despite initially considering Australia we definitely believe that we made the correct decision in coming to NZ.
We have been getting this question a lot lately too - we moved from a McMansion in Dallas to a little farm house just east of Wellington 3 years ago. I had an opportunity for a job transfer, and we were planning on downsizing from 4k sq ft anyway (only had one of our 4 kids still at home with us). It was SO LIBERATING to get rid of stuff that was just consuming us, and I swear, we had to have the McMansion to house all our stuff. Now, we are so in love with this country and I can't imagine living anywhere else. You're lucky to be a Kiwi by birth, we went through the stress and struggles to get permanent residency here, but it was totally worth it. All the best with shifting house down here -
Been in nz for about 6 years now and will become a citizen this year. Welcome brother. Best country for me. Only problem for me is the salary for my profession is low compared to other countries but certainly enough to live comfortably

There's lots of Tiny Houses in NZ, if you're thinking of downsizing and being more conscious of accumulating worldly goods! Check out Living Big in a Tiny House, they just posted a video this weekend about this tiny in NZ with a KILLER view! The creator of the series, Bryce, is also from there, I'm sure he'd be a good guide to tiny living in NZ!! Less house means more land and adventures!! :P I hope it all goes smoothly for you both! Hey Alex, following your journey. Moved to NZ from South Africa 2 years ago so I know all about it, we also brought our dog with us! If you ever down Christchurch way and need some guidance, hit me up 🤙
I was raised in Gisborne and now reside in Christchurch. As a kid my family sent alot of time around Taupo/Turangi (family batch was in between both towns) and we did alot of fishing and hunting. I'm not sure if it's still being done but if you did 7 day horse trecking through the native forests you'll never forget it. Totally agree with your thoughts about immersing yourself in another culture. We've been living in Nicaragua since the pandemic started and it's been interesting to see the similarities and the differences between Nicaragua and our home country of Australia.
We have had a lot of citizens moving back after years of being away it is certainly changing the dynamics of the employment and housing markets. I think 2021 we will be facing new issues.
I am currently studying cultural anthropology and classical history at Victoria uni in Wellington! The C-Anth program there is amazing, definitely some good anthropological work going on in NZ at the moment!!
I love your motivations and content but I have to voice up. No single generation has exclusivity on valuing equality and justice for all. People have been fighting for it for centuries. Everyone no matter how young or old can contribute to bringing about change, so, sorry it not your generation alone on the crusade, FYI this form a 40 something and working to progress social justice principals every day.
Thank you Penny. I totally hear you and it was my mistake to phrase it the way I did. I was trying to convey that it was the responsibility of our generation to usher those changes in. Yeah it's veryyyy expensive here and wages aren't great, certainly in comparison to other like countries. The lifestyle is our best selling point certainly but it's difficult for an average person to move here. Gonna need some funds and a specialist trade really. Though financially my whanau would be better off elsewhere, we wouldn't trade the lifestyle especially not now or anytime in the near future.

Good for you bro, totally agree with you, sometimes you just have to go for it. If you aren't constantly pushing the boundaries of your life are you truly living or just existing?
You are probably aware of the need to book your spot in NZ's managed isolation. What you may not be aware of a bit of chaos that is happening at the moment. Lots of flight dates are getting shifted, but your isolation booking doesn't automatically move with it, the passenger as to rebook themselves. Which causes an issue if the iso booking system shows as full at that new date. Since this seems to be happening a bit, spots in iso do free up. The passenger just has to keep checking back - there doesn't seem to be a wait list or notification option in place yet. Watch the video at the top of the article as they don't cover the same ground. (This is from NZ's TV3 News organisation Newshub) www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/11/coronavirus-air-nz-passengers-caught-out-by-isolation-vouchers-can-change-fights-for-free.html
Thanks for this good honest video! I like to watch you and Carries channels! You are such a good couple! Wish you make your movement easy and exciting!
New Zealanders look up to Americans. We love and try to emulate Americans where ever possible..eg regarding ing the so called climate debate... we have decided to follow America and barely acknowledge its happening and not to do anything that will touch the owners of MewZeslands bottom line.exactly like America. Another thing is that despite the hype New Zealand is Racist in on going and systemic ways exactly like America. It goes on and on ... Another thing we do like America is import and exploit labourers to do the jobs of New Zealanders who refuse to work for such little money from our multinational corporate bosses. Lol
I think those who make racism in the comments are from Europe and East Asia, this is not your country, but this country belongs to its indigenous people and you know very well from its indigenous people.
Travel to New Zealand: All New Zealand citizens and residents returning to New Zealand must complete at least 14 days of managed isolation or quarantine and test negative for COVID-19 before entering the community.
As an American who has lived in New Zealand for 20 years, I can't think of anything I'd rather do more right now than move back home. New Zealand is going down the shitter.
All the feels for me on this one. We decided on a sabbatical and were moved within 6 weeks of making the decision. So glad we did, we have all grown from our travels.
Americans might want to think twice if they are into hunting and fishing in NZ The fish are hanging in there if they are near a agrifarm. There’s no pigs and shit because they all got poisoned with NZs weapon of choice 1080.lol
Love the updates Alex. Once here, hopefully some of the borders to Rarotonga and Australia might have eased but hey, have all of paradise to explore anyway :-)
I am NZ born, lived 30 years in Australia and now back again after my third time. I may not stay forever, but have had the chance to finally be a South Islander...and I love it.
Top tips to survive managed isolation, 1 just because they give you food it doesn't mean you have to eat it. 2. Relax it isn't prison unless you have a role-playing fetish. 3 try to use your time to learn te reo Māori and Māori culture 2 weeks studying is great. 4 use the exercise opportunity when you can. And finally don't waste to much cash on buying stuff in
Several of the great Apollo astronauts said something similar ... despite man made borders and politics we are all in this together on this tiny ball in the infinity of space! PS check out the Country Calendar playlist, lots of great videos of nz country life I'm sure you will enjoy ua-cam.com/users/tvnz
Hey Dude, I'm a videographer and I was wondering if I could use about 20-40 seconds of scenery you shot in New Zealand? I'm here in Wellington New Zealand. It would be great and I'd really appreciate it. I'd need it asap. Cheers mate!
Just out of curiosity I googled how big the average american 3 bedroom home is compared to our home in NZ...it's 3.5 times bigger than our house O_o Good luck on your journey down here, when I moved here none of my friends knew all the hoops I had to jump through to move here. Kia kaha from Waitakere.
Just started watching this and you're on a run on your lovely wide streets! It's no wonder the cars over there are so big!! 🤣😂 I live in Mt Eden Auckland and the streets around me are narrow and when there are cars parked on either side you need to pull over because there's no room for two cars. It's worse out West where the streets are more narrow and windier. A minor downside to NZ but anyway, back to the vid ...😁
Best of luck with your new life here in NZ. I am sure you both will love it and fit in well anywhere out in the countryside, plenty of great little spots to settle through nz.

Are you considering living in a tiny house? Asking because you mentioned the downsizing and minimalism. I've been following a channel called Living Big in a Tiny House and the tiny house movement seems to be really big in NZ! And since the nature is so beautiful there, no wonder people want to live closer to nature there. The legal stuff seems more accommodating in NZ than in Europe when it comes to tiny houses, I've even begun thinking about trying that out for a year. :D
@Lenka Silhanova actually were in a housing crisis over here and it's actually not as easy as people think it is to build a tiny house local government red tape and by laws can make it extremely difficult in some parts of the country.
@@tooxtalivai0690 what do you mean a housing crisis? Like there’s not enough housing for everyone? If that’s the case you’d think they’d encourage people to build more houses.
Inclusion and equity is across generations and not just your generation. There is much to learn from all ages, much work has been done for the young to build on. Welcome to Aotearoa.
Yay good explanation! I was wondering whether it was a kind of - let’s get outta here as things are getting bad - but it makes sense why you’re moving and thanks for explaining it! All the best for the move guys
Love your story and philosophy and subscribed to your channel. My wife and I are on a similar journey. We are leaving our home in Oregon due to my wife’s biotoxin illness to mold. We may be looking to move to New Zealand.
If this is something that you pursue be aware that a lot of NZ homes have issues with black mould - there is often some renovation required to get the mould removed permanently. Flats in colder parts of the country have this issue and can be difficult to resolve due to bad landlords (although we have some laws now that are giving tenants more rights/teeth, which is good).
Lol I think you’re confused. That’s not what equality means. A dish washer should make a living wage and be able to pay their rent and utilities with money leftover for gas and food. No one thinks a dish washer should make the same as an engineer though. Not sure where you heard that one.
I am loving your videos of sharing your experience of moving to NZ! I have considering doing the same for awhile now. I am wondering what company are you using to help you moving with your dog?
As someone who *did* move to NZ (from the U.S.) for political reasons in 2017 - I think it's wise to move for other, more personal reasons. While we have enjoyed some aspects of living here, it never has felt like a place we could call "home." Sure it's pretty and all, but that doesn't really matter if you're not emotionally attached to the place. I've lived in Sweden and Korea and both of those places felt more like "home" because I choose to move there for personal reasons - I was emotionally connected to the geographical space - it wasn't just a place I fled to. It's kinda like "voting against" a candidate vs. "voting for" - if you get my drift: I "voted for" Korea and Sweden, whereas in our move to NZ, I was "voting against" the U.S. For that reason, I feel disconnected here in NZ - as if I shouldn't be here, and I don't care as deeply about the place as I do about Sweden or Korea. Mostly I feel guilty for moving to NZ instead of trying to be a part of the change in the U.S and getting politically involved. For that reason, we're actually considering moving back to the States and getting more involved in the community and local politics. So - word to the wise - it's good that you're not moving for political reasons! Bravo and hope the transition is smooth :).
@Tombstone Station I’m not saying it’s wrong or right. I want to see proof of these “fake ballots”. Honestly I don’t put it past people to do something like that. Unfortunately there are very passionate people out there who would go to great lengths to make sure the elections turns out the way they want it to. I still want to actually see the proof or have it verified.
@Tombstone Station from what I’ve seen the list of registered voters that they were comparing to was an old list from a few years ago. A lot more people have registered since then.
I think once you move here you won't want to leave. I came to NZ 20 years ago for limited time and stayed.
lol

👍🏾totally agree with you. I left the USA 14.5 years ago to move to Europe and still love every minute of it. Wishing you both all the best and the vlog content from NZ.
Congratulations Alex and Carrie...really happy for you guys. So nice that you have a life where you can just go with the flow and have such a free life to explore and live life to it’s fullest. Best of luck....I will stay tuned.
Thank you Mark! We work hard for our freedom but don’t complain about the hustle, it’s worth it. Appreciate your support
Get into permaculture once you're there. Great opportunities for that. I totally get you when you say grow your own food. I was wondering after your wanderings in New Zealand are you most likely to settle in South Island? that's the best part of the country.
Hey Kay! I love the South Island and am already learning lots about permaculture. We’d love to set something up like that. Stay tuned 🤙🏼
The South Island is most definitely NOT best!
@@officialWWM Yeah it is,the scenery is unequalled, plus rents and property are cheaper.
@@Andy_M986 Ever been to Taupo bro? Its gods country!
@@officialWWM Yeah bro,i grew up in Rotorua,so it wasn't far to go to visit,it's bloody nice there.

Good for you bro, totally agree with you, sometimes you just have to go for it. If you aren't constantly pushing the boundaries of your life are you truly living or just existing?
Couldn’t have said it better myself Craig!
(This is from NZ's TV3 News organisation Newshub)

Thank you Ana!!! I appreciate your kind words
Lol
Moving to New Zealand is like moving to a large dairy farm.
If you love all things inorganic ,Corporate and the cultural of Facism, then NZ is the p
I think those who make racism in the comments are from Europe and East Asia, this is not your country, but this country belongs to its indigenous people and you know very well from its indigenous people.
Add $3000 each to pay for your self quarantine
Not if they’re moving here to live
Travel to New Zealand:
All New Zealand citizens and residents returning to New Zealand must complete at least 14 days of managed isolation or quarantine and test negative for COVID-19 before entering the community.
I love the Dead and Company shirt!
Americans might want to think twice if they are into hunting and fishing in NZ
The fish are hanging in there if they are near a agrifarm.
There’s no pigs and shit because they all got poisoned with NZs weapon of choice 1080.lol
Good luck with the move, hope all goes smoothly.
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Gisborne is a cool place great climate isolated good waves New Plymouth and around the surf highway is awesome
We will be checking all of them out for sure!
Love the updates Alex. Once here, hopefully some of the borders to Rarotonga and Australia might have eased but hey, have all of paradise to explore anyway :-)
Fingers crossed! Thanks Leon!
I am happy for you both! Exciting.
Cool video! We’re lucky to have you both in NZ, welcome home & safe travels 🇳🇿🇺🇸

Cheers! New video coming this weekend
I am NZ born, lived 30 years in Australia and now back again after my third time. I may not stay forever, but have had the chance to finally be a South Islander...and I love it.
I want to move to New Zealand!!!
Top tips to survive managed isolation,
1 just because they give you food it doesn't mean you have to eat it.
2. Relax it isn't prison unless you have a role-playing fetish.
3 try to use your time to learn te reo Māori and Māori culture 2 weeks studying is great.
4 use the exercise opportunity when you can.
And finally don't waste to much cash on buying stuff in
Kia ora! You're very welcome in NZL 🤙🏼
Thanks Sam! Much appreciated
Several of the great Apollo astronauts said something similar ... despite man made borders and politics we are all in this together on this tiny ball in the infinity of space!

Hey Dude, I'm a videographer and I was wondering if I could use about 20-40 seconds of scenery you shot in New Zealand? I'm here in Wellington New Zealand. It would be great and I'd really appreciate it. I'd need it asap. Cheers mate!
Just out of curiosity I googled how big the average american 3 bedroom home is compared to our home in NZ...it's 3.5 times bigger than our house O_o
Good luck on your journey down here, when I moved here none of my friends knew all the hoops I had to jump through to move here.
Speaking of Vagabrothers, any updates on that end? How’s your brother, will he return to YT? Really enjoyed the content you guys created
Interesting that lots of your filming is in the top of the South. Perhaps you are making a directional statement with your camera.
Whatever happened to Marko?
He posted on Instagram recently saying that he’s moving to Oaxaca, Mexico and writing a book.
What happens to vagabrothers after you move? Any chance you and Marco post videos to each other from Newzeland/Mexico ?
smeg toaster bahahaha you'll fit right in. Kiwis be obsessed with smeg right now
Best of luck with your new life here in NZ. I am sure you both will love it and fit in well anywhere out in the countryside, plenty of great little spots to settle through nz.
Everyone please pray for the USA now that Biden is president 😂
Why? What are you worried about in particular?
@@ccap3211 The facts hes probably gonna bomb the shit out of the middle east for no reason and is gonna fuck up the peace trump made with north korea. Im not even a trump supporter but trump is certainly much better than biden
Make sure to book your quarantine in NZ, places are limited
Depends where you decide to live, one thing for sure you can throw that dog lead away when yous go running whether in the bush or on our unpopulated beaches...
I don’t think they have any plans to get a tiny house.
@@ccap3211 Well, that's why I'm asking them to find out. :) I find it fascinating how much is the tiny house movement booming in NZ.
@@lenkaontherun I wonder why! Just because of the price? I don’t understand why anyone would want to live in a place that’s like 150/200 square feet.
Inclusion and equity is across generations and not just your generation. There is much to learn from all ages, much work has been done for the young to build on. Welcome to Aotearoa.
Totally agree. That comment about it sitting squarely with the young miffed me.
Alex they maybe changing the quarantine laws. Just a heads up.
You mentioned equality however im struggling with that. I do not believe that a dishwasher should make the same money as an electrical engineer
Lol I think you’re confused. That’s not what equality means. A dish washer should make a living wage and be able to pay their rent and utilities with money leftover for gas and food. No one thinks a dish washer should make the same as an engineer though. Not sure where you heard that one.
That’s not equality... That’s communism
I know your back must hurt brotha, I know you had to lift those boxes 📦
You will all be okay in NZ, safe travels?
All the Best ❤️👍

I am loving your videos of sharing your experience of moving to NZ! I have considering doing the same for awhile now. I am wondering what company are you using to help you moving with your dog?
Thanks Catherine! We will share more about Lanka's move soon! Stay tuned :)
I voted for joe
@Tombstone Station is there any proof of this? Or just another conspiracy theory?
@Tombstone Station I’m not saying it’s wrong or right. I want to see proof of these “fake ballots”. Honestly I don’t put it past people to do something like that. Unfortunately there are very passionate people out there who would go to great lengths to make sure the elections turns out the way they want it to. I still want to actually see the proof or have it verified.
@Tombstone Station from what I’ve seen the list of registered voters that they were comparing to was an old list from a few years ago. A lot more people have registered since then.
@Tombstone Station no, more young people are registering. You have no proof of what you’re saying. If you did you would have linked it by now.
