  • In this video, we look at the numerous attempts to overthrow Henry VII. With his weak claim to the throne and his Lancastrian roots, it was sure that he would be targeted by many particularly the Yorkists.

Simnel (sp) was brought forth as being the Earl of Warwick. Warwick was not one of the two 'Princes in the Tower'. They were the two sons of Edward IV. Their disappearance has never been resolved although most believe that their uncle, Richard III was responsible for their death. But this little part of history has it's twists as well as you note in the story of the second 'pretender' Perkin Warbeck. The Earl of Warkick did reside in the tower during Henry VII's reign however he was Edward Plantageanet (named after Edward IV his uncle). Warwick was commonly known as 'Teddy' His father was George 'Duke of Clarence' the third brother of Edward IV and Richard III. Teddy's sister was Margaret Plantageanet. Margaret and Teddy were cousins to HenryVII's wife, Elizabeth of York the eldest daughter of Edward IV's. The 'Princes in the Tower' were Elizabeth's brothers. Henry VII brought Warwick out of the Tower and basically paraded him in public thus disproving Simnal's 'claim'. I have to say I have found that history in England around this era seems, personally, to be somewhat difficult to sort out if you aren't really familiar with it. Some of the biggest problems I found was there are certain first names that were used on on a regular basis within immediate and closely connected family members. Sometimes you really have to do some careful heavy duty 'digging' to sort everyone out.
As noted, Henry VII spent a large amount of money to catch and ultimately eliminate Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck presented a very large very real threat to Henry's reign. I think the largest contributing factor in this was that as the two Princes in the Tower' had 'disappeared' there really wasn't any way of definitively proving that Warbeck was not one of the two. Theories abounded that the younger of the two brothers imprisoned, Prince Richard, was actually a child placed in the tower in Richard's place and that the true Richard had actually escaped capture and death. Contributing to and escalating the threat Warbeck presented was that there was a very large number of people that wanted this to be the truth. Henry had rightly won his crown through battle with Richard III and many still wanted the Lancastrians to rule rather than the Tudors

Simnel was about 7 Warwick was close to 12. Warbeck’s resemblance to EdwardIV was startling. There is in one of Margaret of Burgundy’s account rolls an entry recording money allocated for “the raising of Yorkist heirs”. We know what happened to every member of the York family who survived Bosworth, except for two. Warbeck emerged from Margaret’s court. He was extremely well educated, trained in music, like EdwardIV, well acquainted with Edward’s court. He had the Plantagenet drooping eyelid. Margaret acknowledged him as her nephew. The nobility of Europe, Scotland and Ireland all accepted him as Richard. He was arrested in England and imprisoned in the Tower. I’ve not been able to determine whether or not there was a trial. Henry was inclined to execute foes without bothering with trials. Warbeck was badly beaten, beyond recognition, forced to read that ridiculous confession to save his son’s life. He was hanged and then, oddly, buried in a royal cemetery. Neither Elizabeth Woodville nor Elizabeth of York were allowed to see him. I think Henry knew exactly who he was. Tyrell’s supposed confession, read only after his execution came well after Warbeck’s death.

@@nbenefiel Typical propaganda from Richard III apologists (aka Richard III society)! Very light on facts, very heavy on speculation and conspiracy theories! BTW, expect for Margaret of Burgundy (obviously she is going to pick anyone opposed to Henry VII) and James IV of Scotland (enemy of Henry VII), all of the other European nobility accepted that Warbeck was indeed a pretender (after being duped by him, initially)!

@@kurtmac I really doubt that Margaret of Burgundy would back the son of a Flemish boatman over her niece, Elizabeth of York. No matter how much she disliked Henry Tudor, his children had Plantagenet blood. That would matter to Margaret. Perkin Warbeck had knowledge of EdwardIV’s court that Margaret would have had no way of knowing as she left England before Edward became king and only returned once for a very short visit.

@@kurtmac Why do you think Henry had Perkins face destroyed before forcing him to read that weird confession? Why did Henry have him buried in a cemetery for the high nobility?

@@nbenefiel Where's the evidence that Henry ever did that to Perkin? I understand if you don't like the the Tudors and are obsessed with everything Richard III & think he is a bloody saint! I get that! But don't start making up facts, just to fit this warped reality!

I just traced my grandpa line back to the Wentworth line. I was hoping I'd see some more information on Henry Wentworth here. So far I've maxed out the line at Renaud De Wentworth 1030-1066.

Like Richard III usurped it from his nephew. And Edward IV from Henry VI. And Henry IV from Richard II, and many more before and after them? I don't think he was a usurper. He had been brought up to be king.

How? He may be a usurper but his royal claim comes from his mother who was descended from Edward III. His mother giving birth to him is hard to fake

I think Henry knew full well that Warbeck was Richard of York. Why else would he have buried him in a royal cemetery? Why else bash his face in before forcing him to read that ridiculous confession for the sake of his son’s life? Why else refuse to allow either Elizabeth Woodville or Elizabeth of York to even catch sight of him?

dude, you said Richard III fought against the Yorkists with Lovell - is there a genuine explanation for this or was it a slip of the tongue? i thought Richard III was a yorkist

Sorry that would have been a slip of the tongue. Both Richard III and Viscount Lovell were Yorkists who fought against the Lancastrians.
