Same. I tried reading it once, but I found the writing to be terrible. Like that horribly awkward way to introduce Isabelle, to let us know she’s his sister. But even worse was when he explains demons to someone who should already know everything about them, even though they’re supposedly alone in order to forcibly let Clary/the reader know about them. What an awful way to information drop, ugh. Also, as Cari rightfully points out, Clary is a 15 y/o in this club (how did she even get there? She can’t legally drive yet. Did someone drop her off? Is Simon 16 and has his own car yet?) But yeah, what’s a 15 y/o doing in a club? Why would you follow someone with a knife? That. That right there is my number one writing pet peeve - forcing a plot along through sheer stupidity. And why would I, the reader, want to know and follow along a stupid MC? Frankly I find it insulting. Sure, the target audience is teens, but just because it’s teens doesn’t mean we should expect them to overlook or accept poor writing and dumb drivel/characters.
Can't believe Clare made her villain's last name Morgenstern, which means "morning star" in German. Who else is known as the "morning star"? Lucifer. Satan. The most widely known fallen angel. I cannot.
If I’m remembering correctly Lucifer and Satan/Sammael are different Fallen Angels. But yes, the name Morgenstern is a reference to Morning Star and Lucifer.
Oh, THAT'S why the Dark Lord in this has such a stupid last name. I was wondering why the author made both her protagonist and villain sound like 35-year-old accountants from Leipzig

The side quest for Rat Simon will always stand out as my favourite part of the book. So ridiculous, so out of left field and to top it off escaping on a flying moterbycle. Just 10/10 all round haha
Finding out the Cassandra Clare originally wrote Ron and Ginny Weasley fanfic puts this entire series into perspective 😬 Anyways, THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS BOOK! 🫶🏾
@@sophielem59 It was both, but the Draco/Ginny one is what The Mortal Instruments is based on. Though the Ron/Ginny one is confusingly where the title "Mortal Instruments" comes from. I've been reading his books soo long ago and only now I realise that Jace is just the human embodiment of a cat. Doesn't like cucumbers and bergamot, gets grumpy if things don't go his way, is terribly narcissistic, appears and states at you out of nowhere, has a weird focus on dead birds...
I literally love every single photo you used for the characters. Like obviously the movie casting for Jace and Simon was pitch perfect, and Luke Danes as Luke with Lorelei as Jocelyn SENT me
I love it. I have never wanted to read that series, but I loooove your energy, this mix of kindergarten-teacher easy-to-understand explaining, the girls-on-a-night-out drama and the reporter style not-commenting-your-opinion too much, it's gold. I will watch every single video of this series. Thank you for all the effort 👌❤️
The Gerard Way necklace, Gilmore Girls on the wall, Lucius Malfoy's luscious yet atrociously "blonde" locks of hair... this is gonna be a stellar video.
I forgot how much I loved early Clary lol just slapping Jace for risking her life And how narcissistic early Jace was as well like by the mid-end book 1 the plot is already going off the rails but the characterization was so entertaining
THANK GOD it's not just me, Simon is the best and I love him. Absolutely carried the book for me, and his misadventures later on are my favorite parts of the series
Drawing the parallel to a D&D game honestly makes so much sense - Clary is the new party member that gets included into an already existing adventuring group of heroes and has to be brought up to date with the current lore - fantasy creatures like vampires, werewolves and demons - fantasy races and classes like elves and warlocks - they all have insanely huge plot armour - Valentine’s uprising etc is the main story arc and Clary’s motivation (aka backstory) gets roped into the main plot line to explain why she goes along with the party - they deviate from said main plot all the time to finish more entertaining side plots - Simon is their favourite NPC that sometimes just appears from nowhere and knows just enough about the lore to be kind of helpful - all the main characters are the players’ wish fulfilments and just the right kind of edgy loner but also charismatic star of the show and badass fighter
My sister and I call Jace's personality a "Herondale Complex." It's a martyr complex crossed with the vampire "you have to stay away from me for your own good" complex with a pound of angst and sarcasm mixed in.
But why does calling it the "Herondale Complex" make it so much better when you've read the Infernal Devices and realize that it truly runs in the family? Even Kit gets the complex in The Dark Artifices! And it continued in The Last Hours too 😂😂

The fact that in multiple book series siblings or parbatai,, who are like siblings anyway, spend so much time kissing or wanting to kiss, like it just doesn't even end after the mortal instruments book series is insane (I've grown up with the book and tv show and it's so nostalgic lol, even if looking back some of it is not great. Like Alec especially just was always so important to me,, because like first gay character I probably ever read about oops)
Clary’s impulsivity and Jace’s sarcasm tried to end me on multiple occasions when reading this book back in the day. Can’t wait for the summary 😂 also to my understanding Jocelyn and Luke weren’t in a relationship at all at the beginning? They didn’t get together until later right ?
I don't think they officially were together until the end of book 3 when Jocelyn wakes up and is like "do I or do I not" to Whatsherface WhowaspreviouslyaHerondale.

30:07 The idea that you could somehow hide a small country, even if it's effectively just a small village, along the border of France and Germany is honestly so funny. Like even if invisibility in this universe is the kind where you are physically capable of perceiving something, but mentally you can't grasp it/it slides off your conscious thought, so you can't realise that you are seeing it, that's just not possible. The French-German border is only about 450 km long and it's one of the most trafficked, most well-policed and more densely populated non-conurbation areas in the EU. It's not like there's vast stretches of untouched nature where you can just not happen upon a very small nation, that doesn't exist in Europe, there's at least roads and fields everywhere. Also land has always been crazy expensive in that region, so unless they have Wakanda-style mountain illusions and/or Harry Potter Quidditch World Championship-style area enchantments that mess with non-magic people's minds (and possibly their perception of space) to make them stay away from the place, you are definitely not staying secret. At least say it's hidden somewhere way up in the Alps or something, at least then it's slightly less inevitable that some civilian is going to just randomly bump into the place every other week on accident.
i love this and also cari PLEASE do throne of glass. you capture sjm's writing so well and i haven't read the series in years, please please please do it it would be so funny

But to me he is the #1 Jace. 13yr old me was obsessed and sooo sad that the rest of the series was never made into film.
The photos of OTHER fictional characters as characters in this book is absolutely killing me, never laughed harder. Thank you so much
I thought I was trippin 😂😂
lorelai and luke 😭
you are the redheaded girl version of mike’s mic that the world needs
so real for this, i didn't know there was an overlap here i thought it was just me
Two worlds colliding in the best possible way, pop history and bookish past, love it!
I thought I was the only one thinking this 😂😂😂😂😂
Except she's not annoying

THE TEENAGE DREAM EDIT OH MY GOD I'M DYING
I read this book when I was 13 and hated it but at least it eventually led me to this summary
bahhahaha
@@caricanreadhow did you get this edit I need it pls
@@trishlopez7308 i made it lol this is my video!
@@caricanread it made my day lmao
Please do this entire series because I so desperately wanted to read them as a teen, but I just COULD NOT deal with Cassandra’s writing style 😅
I wish I realized that I didn't need to read the book before the movie comes out every time sooner cuz I struggled thru the Maze Runner, but for what??? 🥺
I can't with Maas either lmao
same !!!!
It's the same for me, i even bought the series as a whole bc i thought it would motivate me to read more, but nopeee 😭 couldn't get through it
Same. I just couldn't.
@@greenberry6019 lmao as someone living in Leipzig this comment made me laugh
@@rica3947 😂 that's funny. Do you happen to actually know anyone named Morgenstern?
@@greenberry6019hi I'm not from Leipzig but somewhere else in Germany and have to sadly say that this name isn't very common in Germany. 🙁😄 Don't know if the general populace is familiar with the connection with Lucifer but yeah, not common anyhoo
Everyone being nice to Clary once they think she’s no longer a threat/love interest to Jace is hilarious
I absolutely love your plot summaries, they are a balm to soothe my soul
bahahhaha
i was sooo obsessed with these books when i was 11/12... cant wait to see wtf i actually read back then. a lot of weird shit happened, especially once Sebastian (?) became a part of the equation 🙃
same tho omfg
same!!! I was obssseesssssed with this series. read all of them. I remember it being SO good…..can only remember one or two plots lmao
It's literally the trashiest thing I've ever read. Can't believe 8 yr old me thought this was a masterpiece lol.
@@caricanread I’m just waiting for Brother Zachariah to enter the picture because
the infernal devices and the last hours >>>>>> the mortal instruments and the dark artifices
i always thought the plot hole of jace not recognizing his father in the Circle group photo was bc jace was looking at valentine thinking that was michael and no one has any photos of anyone, like the shadow hunters need to carry around photo ID and it would legit solve 85% of their misunderstandings
The side quest for Rat Simon will always stand out as my favourite part of the book. So ridiculous, so out of left field and to top it off escaping on a flying moterbycle. Just 10/10 all round haha
Ok I lost it at “and lucky for us Simon plays D&D” 😂 Cari your retelling is so entertaining.
It’s been a while since I read this series, can’t wait to relive this debut mess!!
truly a wild ride!
i am team "Absolutely not siblings because why would the bad guy actually tell the truth?" Thank you Cari, this is a blessing
Finding out the Cassandra Clare originally wrote Ron and Ginny Weasley fanfic puts this entire series into perspective 😬 Anyways, THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS BOOK! 🫶🏾
Thank you I needed that. My mind is still a mess but at least I can kinda understand hers a bit now
I think it was Draco and Ginny, not Ron and Ginny 😂
@@sophielem59no it was definitely ron and ginny.
@@sophielem59 oh it was unfortunately ron and ginny
@@sophielem59 It was both, but the Draco/Ginny one is what The Mortal Instruments is based on. Though the Ron/Ginny one is confusingly where the title "Mortal Instruments" comes from. It's not as bad as it sounds though - she wrote the Ron/Ginny one out of pettiness and spite to piss off users of another forum she had beef with. Which is still pretty bad.
I just crack up everytime Jace is mentioned and Teenage Dream is played 😂
I literally love every single photo you used for the characters. Like obviously the movie casting for Jace and Simon was pitch perfect, and Luke Danes as Luke with Lorelei as Jocelyn SENT me
I love it. I have never wanted to read that series, but I loooove your energy, this mix of kindergarten-teacher easy-to-understand explaining, the girls-on-a-night-out drama and the reporter style not-commenting-your-opinion too much, it's gold. I will watch every single video of this series. Thank you for all the effort 👌❤️
I read city of bones last year and I was so traumatized I refused to read the rest, so this is now the only way I will see what the rest is about
i've got your back dont worry hahaha
The rest is so good though!
You should try to read all the other series of the shadow hunters world, they are masterpieces.
Don't bother bro they're trash
That’s what happened to me in middle school😭
The Gerard Way necklace, Gilmore Girls on the wall, Lucius Malfoy's luscious yet atrociously "blonde" locks of hair... this is gonna be a stellar video.
I forgot how much I loved early Clary lol just slapping Jace for risking her life
And how narcissistic early Jace was as well like by the mid-end book 1 the plot is already going off the rails but the characterization was so entertaining
the fact she used gilmore girls pictures for luke and jocelyn had me laughing so hard my humor is def broken
Whenever they mention Luke in the book I always think of Luke from gilmore girls
THIS IS SO FUN TO WATCH 🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐
-me, a person who has read the whole series and knows everything that's going to happen
YAASSSS!!! 🤭😆🤣😆
THANK GOD it's not just me, Simon is the best and I love him. Absolutely carried the book for me, and his misadventures later on are my favorite parts of the series
Drawing the parallel to a D&D game honestly makes so much sense
- Clary is the new party member that gets included into an already existing adventuring group of heroes and has to be brought up to date with the current lore
- fantasy creatures like vampires, werewolves and demons
- fantasy races and classes like elves and warlocks
- they all have insanely huge plot armour
- Valentine’s uprising etc is the main story arc and Clary’s motivation (aka backstory) gets roped into the main plot line to explain why she goes along with the party
- they deviate from said main plot all the time to finish more entertaining side plots
- Simon is their favourite NPC that sometimes just appears from nowhere and knows just enough about the lore to be kind of helpful
- all the main characters are the players’ wish fulfilments and just the right kind of edgy loner but also charismatic star of the show and badass fighter
And it continued in The Last Hours too 😂😂
I literally binged your ACOTAR series and Crescent City series in like 3 days 😂 I loved them so much and I was hoping you’d do more and the GASP I made when I saw you’re doing mortal instruments 😭😭 thank you Cari for the funny amazing content 😂
thank yOU!!!!
Did I read all of these almost religiously when I was younger? Yes.
Am I about to spend 2 hrs of my life watching cari doing a recap? Also yes
Omg I’m exactly in the same boat as you
Yooooo same
I know this series is insane, but I just love series with ridiculously complicated plot points. Seriously my favourite guilty pleasure series.
Shadowhunters/TMI 🤝 Once Upon a Time
I was 13 when I read shadowhunters and was obsessed with it till I turned 19. The chock hold mortal instruments had on my teenage years is CRAZY
Fr! I was in the TRENCHES. Like I made my pen into a Stele, I drew runes on myself (RIP to 15 yo me drawing a strength rune on my arm before my grandpas funeral WTF?!)
I hate-love thinking back on it bc I was so fucking embarassing 😭
I think I stopped at like 17 bc I just kinda lost interest in the books, but I binged the TV show like 4 times
I went to her book signing in Florence (2013) I was 14 and obsessed 😭😭😭😂
Have I read TMI books? Yes.
Will I watch anyways? Absolutely.
Keep it up with the looooooong videos Cari! I really love them 🫶🏻
I started reading this series in middle school and I have suffered from the psychic damage it has given me ever since
Psychic? Like you can predict the future?
Yessssss - this book series remains unironically one of my favorites
we were robbed when they cancelled the films!
Agree Jamie Campbell bower 💋👌🏻
@@caricanreadyou are so right cari omg
“RHYSAND INVENTED FEMINISM BUT JACE INVENTED SARCASM AND NARCISSISM” THAT IS SO DAMN FUNNY
When you read all of it, when you get to meet Will in the past and it all makes sense 🤣 Cassie just went full ham on the Herondales. It's like: "Yeah, these are the hottest ever, most dramatic people you'll ever meet, who actually believe in the one true love for them and once they fall they fall so hard the freaking earth shatters". And I was and am here for every moment of it 💖
cari i found you through your ACOTAR summaries, and the fact that you've decided to cover one of my most formative middle school reading experiences??? 10/10 chef's kiss. also the editing in this is stellar
GIRL HOW DID YOU KNOW I NEEDED THIS? 😍
😍😍😍
!!!AGREED!! thankyou love your tellings!
"Lucky for us, Simon plays DnD"
Anyway the mic rattling constantly is getting unbearable
Read the description 🙃
I laughed out loud reading the description of Simon and Clary’s dancing because this is where Cassie Clare reveals how much older than her readers she is, LOL. I know most people reading this would be like WTF?! But I am almost as old as the author so I immediately recognized this as ‘90s goth dancing.
Anyway, there’s your history lesson for the day, thanks for tuning in.
This took me back to how 16 year old me was GAGGED when the sibiling twist dropped. Lmao cassie clare was so silly for that
I actually lost it at the Parent trap pictures at 1:24:40 . And totally forgot the whole plot of this book except the end, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for covering it.
"No human would go 'oh look at all these humans.'" Jokes on you my 5 year old does that all the time!😂
As someone who never watched this movie realizing Jamie Campbell Bower played Jace truly blew my mind right out of my face and onto my phone. JCB how did you end up in this movie 😂
Jamie Campbell... JC... 😮😮😮
He was honestly the best part of the movie
this was arguably his breakout role! terrible movie but jcb was awesome in it
congrats you unlocked the memory of 13-year old me not liking Jace becuase he hates bergamot and earl grey tea
You were a real one 😂
I literally hated everyone in these books EXCEPT for Simon
The fact that in multiple book series siblings or parbatai,, who are like siblings anyway, spend so much time kissing or wanting to kiss, like it just doesn't even end after the mortal instruments book series is insane
(I've grown up with the book and tv show and it's so nostalgic lol, even if looking back some of it is not great. Like Alec especially just was always so important to me,, because like first gay character I probably ever read about oops)

same alec was my fav for that reason now that I look back😭💗
thank god you did this, i never finished the series cause I was weirded out by the incest-ness of the first book, so now I'll know how it ends
i've got youuu!
I have been anxiously waiting for these!
love your description of Jace as a manic pixie dream girl😭
tell me im wrong hahaha
@@caricanread we simply can't
Clary’s impulsivity and Jace’s sarcasm tried to end me on multiple occasions when reading this book back in the day. Can’t wait for the summary 😂 also to my understanding Jocelyn and Luke weren’t in a relationship at all at the beginning? They didn’t get together until later right ?
Yess luke was just protecting and helping Jocelyn and Clary
Luke liked Jocelyn. Jocelyn liked Luke but wasn’t ready for a relationship or anything like that. So they’re friends.
yeah i was confused too
I don't think they officially were together until the end of book 3 when Jocelyn wakes up and is like "do I or do I not" to Whatsherface WhowaspreviouslyaHerondale.
As someone who's read all of Cassandra Clare's books at least 3 times, I enjoyed this video so much 😂 the books are truly unhinged, but that's what makes them so enjoyable as a fantasy series. Thank you for making me laugh so much with this video, can't wait for the rest!
This book series is oddly enough my guilty pleasure. My friends and I LOVED it when we were around 11-12 years old, and then reread almost ALL the books during the pandemic, because we had nothing better to do. I'm ashamed to admit I can probably recite the entire plot (prequels included) in my sleep, so I'm very excited about your plot summary!
May the good Lord bless and keep you, Cari, for covering this series. I AM SO HERE FOR THIS OMG.
❤❤❤
These plot summaries are truly the best thing ever haha
Makes my drive home in traffic so much better
And Luke and Lorelai being up there is *chef's kiss*
this video is a godsend. i wanted to reread the series, since it was my whole personality when i was like 14 to 16 and i don't remember anything. however, i know it was objectively bad and i didn't wanna ruin the nostalgia i have for them, so this is literally perfect.
is that a gerard way necklace?? immediately subscribed.
CARI PLS MORE CC PLOT REVIEWS rewatching your commentaries to these unhinged stories is quite practically the only thing keeping me alive
this is so very random but your plot videos are the perfect length for me to fold dumplings too so I get excited for them because it means ill have a bunch of frozen dumplings for the next month.
omg jealous tho hahha love me a dumpling!
2+ hours just for book 1?? Oh man we are in for a journey! Definitely suggest combining some of the later books into the same video. I enjoy every minute of these recap videos!
Your visual aids are always so on point in these kinds of videos. I love the inclusion of Luke & Lorelai.
Simon is 1000% the reason i read these books. He's the BEST!!
I will forever be grateful for youtube reccomending me this because i've been sitting with a dumb smile on my face for 2 hours. I've seen the movie got and read all the 6 city books, all 3 clockwork books, and the bane book. Just hearing you talk and constantly joke about everything cracked me up the whole time and i'm super exited for any future video's on this! One hell of an amazing video and keep up the great work!
as someone who read it as a fourteen y/o and watched the movie almost at the same age, the kissing scene was everything to me. my best friend and i played the demi lovato song and cried (not literally) imagining the clace kiss. my cringe teenage years were the best
Exactly, I’ve always loved the movie and was MAD at the tv show because Jamie Campbell Bower was the perfect Jace😭
this is the series that got me into reading when i was small haha, but honestly, i think the first three books are wild, thank you cari, i love all your plot summary videos💗✨
truly we lived in wild times hahhaha
Honestly, while they didn't get me into reading they were the books that got me into YA, I was reading more middle grade fantasy before these books.
Even though I've read this series already..i am ready to relive this world and be with you on this journey cari..😂

Is it weird I watched this video way too many times now but it never stops being amusing and good to listen to ? (I love you summaries btw, especially while I m drawing !)
you’ve created a monster, cari! i’m 100% addicted to this kind of video. i’ve always wanted to read mortal instruments but never managed to finish the first book and now i can finally know more about the clary and jace drama. i don’t know if you plan on doing more of these in the future, but i highly recommend the “shatter me” series. either way, thank you so much for taking the time to record this, i’m sure it’s gonna be just as insane and fun as acotar

i've got youuuuu!
i’ve always heard about the whole brother/sister thing from the series but never got around to reading it myself because of time- even though the plot sounds insane???? I can’t wait for the next video because this is honestly so crazy 😭
You got me back into reading this year after about 10 years of not reading. Just finished my 9th book since the beginning of the year, Mysteries of Thorn Manor. Love your recommendations and your channel! Going to get some snacks and watch this video now, thank you so much Cari!
