Please STOP saying this car needs more power. We are in 2015 and there are still people using max bhp to compare cars. Maximum output means very little in the real world - torque curve is what you want to look at. This 2.0L MX5 may "only" have 160 hp, but its torque curve is so flat that you have access to most of its torque at any give rpm. Unlike the 86/brz that need to be revved to hell to make power, this car goes in any rpm
+Bruno Danese I asked Toyota whether they were going to introduce a more powerful GT86 and they simply replied that if you want more horsepower, add it yourself using aftermarket kit!
First review I've seen to mention the inside quirks in detail, to mention the blind spots at all, or to do it in blue. Motor Trend's review is still my favorite, mostly due to Jonny Lieberman being a ridiculous clown and their extreme production budget, but this is a close second. Perfect length, everything you need to know, and honestly critical while still obviously gushing over this new Miata. The fact that you are so clear in your review of other cars and a Miata (turbo!) owner yourself makes this review all the more delectable. Keep up the good work!

+Alex Eu They did announce 7.3, but it is actually a full second quicker than that, mainly because of the low weight i think (despite the fact it's 160hp).
+Alex Eu Are people still using maximum hp as a talking figure? This 160bhp engine has one of the flattest torque curves on the market - so you have nearly maximum torque at any given rpm
Dude it mostly plays for the character of the engine. If you have a 160hp 200nm car, even if it has maximum torque and hp from 0rpm, it will still stay 200nm and 160hp. Maximum power and torque output permit to compare the performance of the engine. You cannot take the torque and power curve only and say "Oh look the M3 has all its torque on almost all the rev range how sweet it's better than a Ferrari" because it's not. They can make the difference between two cars with similar power, but it won't be that big though. The P85D is that quick off the line mainly because it has all its torque from 0 rpm, yes but 900nm ! You can have 200nm from 0 rpm as well, it won't make you quick !
You simply do not need the extra power from the larger 2L engine. Its all about driving dynamics, and the way the car involves the driver. All you need is the 1500cc engine, the rest of the car just performs brilliantly, you feel that your body is as one with the rest of the car. I know you have to get in and drive the thing, but your body melts into the car, and becomes part of it. A magical wondrous experience, that few cars can equal.
Final comment kind of sums up mx-5 ownership. There's always that desire to make them go as fast as 'proper' sports cars. I used to have one and all the time I had it was spent trying to make it go faster. Yes, they're great fun, but if you want something that goes like a Boxster, buy a Boxster in the first place.
In a car aa lightweight as the current MX5, you do not need the extra power. I had the opportunity to get the 2 Litre engine instead of the 1.5, but went for the 1500, simply because it suits the driving characteristics of the car, better than the more powerful engine. If its more power you want, then maybe the MX5 is not the car for you, buy a cheaper Fiesta ST
In my opinion the most suitable trackday car is an mx-5, if you are wondering let me explain. When all other cars rely on engine power, the mx-5 only relies on its road holding
2.0 for the win, because 1.5 has skinnier wheels, worse brakes ,no strut brace, so it's a bit less sharp... And damn LSD is a must have ! How can you put the LSD only on the 2 ?! The sharpness of this MX-5 makes a big difference with its GT86 competitor, and without the LSD... 2.0 is the way to go.
I've learned to drive in an Audi A5 and I've also driven diferent VW Golfs, a Renault Megane and a few other cars, all newer than my MX-5. However the MX-5s gearbox is just way better than every other gearbox I've ever used. And that's from 1994. Can't imagine how the 2017 mazdas feel.
I was a passenger in one of the very first MX5s back in 1990. I had been in a few porches, Ferrari (once) and some British sports cars of the 1960s, anyway first thing I noticed it was like being in a family saloon car, smooth ride, quiet, refined, then the driver opened it up, then I thought these cars are amazing, it just took off and held the road like scalextric car,
The concept of this car is the perfect harmony between the driver and the car. I would like to recommend it to women who ride sports cars for the first time. Straightforward handling. Pleasant shift change. Lightweight and nimble driving. An exterior that you can love forever. You can see everything on the scenic winding road in the best weather. I'm using Google Translate, so I'm sorry for strange sentences.
Matt - you’re in a unique position to teach people about cars - and yet, you mention a non-existent blind spot. The correct way to look into a ‘blind spot’ zone is to adjust one’s side view mirrors to cover that area - while allowing the rear view mirror to do its job with only the closer edges of adjacent mirrors having the slightest overlap so that there’s no gap in coverage right up to your peripheral vision while looking straight ahead which, when your car is moving at any speed, should be the direction your face is facing, rather than over one’s shoulder while moving forward. When moving in reverse, check first, twice, move slowly and always face or have a clear view in the direction of movement. The above method of adjusting one’s side view mirrors results in virtually 180° mirror coverage behind & to the sides of you… Please, Matt - help the world! Help all your viewers be better drivers! Help them use their current equipment more effectively!
You are the best car reviewer, Mat , keep up with the good job . You really say the truth about every car and describe everything well, thats why i watch these videos even though im not looking for a car :), because they are nice and interesting
Um that "little" storage between the seats is surprisingly deep and probably has a *bigger volume than the glove box in my Volvo* (but only in the proper = soft top model).
At last! A fucking honest review of this mediocre car. Not a single mention of the expected (by Mazda) words such as "sublime" or "blistering performance" and everything the reviewer said about it, is true. How refreshing. It's okay but not world beating, as every MX5 since the NA Mk1 has traded on. The Mk1 MX5 remains the best MX5, with similar handling, mpg and performance as the £20,000 more expensive Mk4. Infact, until Mazda grow some balls and make a proper 2 seater sports car, i'd rather have several mint condition Mk1's instead of one Mk4.
i imagine it depends on your budget 1.5 well probably be far cheaper to insure but the bigger engine will be far more flexible i have a toyota mr2 spyder it has a 1.8 with a six speed manual(rare) doesnt sound big but the car is very very light the only problem i find is then you do have to change down a lot for tight bends but once on the move its great
Im not sure if I fit in, im 1.92m and the non-axial steering wheel is probably a pain. Will visit my Mazda dealership soon to find out because I'm pretty interested.
Matt Why hasn't any review highlighted the buldge out out the side of the drivers side gear lever under your leg when you rest your leg on the foot rest it is a bit annoying as its not in any of the previous models ?
I like matt watson, but he's no Chris Harris. Harris is a serious driver and say what he ultimately thinks of a car. Even James May says he's the best car journalist out there
look cool and I am sure it's amazing to drive but it's just to small, I am 185 cm and I know my head would touch the roof and that's really not good.. I'm driving Opel Astra TwinTop atm and it's good enough for me
I had an NA and an NB before my NC2. I totaled my NC2 and went to look at the ND. After driving it I ended up buying another ND2. Why? 1.) No real cup-holders. Those snap-ins are in the way no matter which spot you use. 2.) No glove box. Seriously? Especially given the difficulty of accessing the center console storage with a cup in the rear holder. 3.) Narrower interior. I'm a pretty smally guy but still, much less comfortable. With the other two issues gone I would probably not be worried about this. It would be more like my NA. But really, that's the best they could do with cup holders and glove box?
I have a 2007 NC hardtop manual. It cost me less than half the price of a used ND, and having driven both I can't for the life of me justify paying megabucks more for essentially the same driving experience. Yes, I'd prefer Apple Carplay and a more up to date interior, but my NC is 95% of the ND experience for a lot less $

This video was great until he started to compare the Miata to an Audi TT. Even if you have a bit of cash left, you would never want to go for a TT, because that's just not the same kind of fun to drive.
OH MY! the top third of the inside door is exposed sheet metal. imagine resting your arm on that and scratching it with any zips/ buttons you have on you sleeve not to mention how cheap it looks. looks like the old school ford ka on the inside.
Piotr Podgórski Yes I do, I live on the outskirts of London so I know what they're like. However when I go on a nice road, a manual car is much much better. It makes driving become an experience rather than just braking and accelerating.
+Will James Absolutely, but they have their place in the world. That place is in the city. And granted, that place is stationary 60% of the time, but still ;).
+Piotr Podgórski +Will James We've driven some great automatics! Some are great, others less so - there are various types of auto 'box for different types of driving. But Mazda make some of the best manual gearboxes in the industry and the one on the MX-5 is clearly no exception.
I'm not into soft tops, but I love how easy and quick it is put it up.

The MX-5 2.0 has just won a trackbattle against a GT86 at "EVO Deadly Rivals" by 0.10 of a second...
It's a peach!
+wtfdididolastnight Evo is our sister title - great to see them driving it hard on that video!

Reduced weight. Plus MX5 mechanism is really convenient and fast to put up and down.

Water reesistent
In my opinion the most suitable trackday car is an mx-5, if you are wondering let me explain. When all other cars rely on engine power, the mx-5 only relies on its road holding
FIRST. What do you think of this little roadster? We can't make our mind up at Carbuyer HQ - the fizzy little 1.5-litre, or the faster 2.0-litre?
I think the 1.5 for the city and around. The 2.0 is well a more performance wise idea
