  • On this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Mo Rocca speaks with Curator of Domestic Life Jeanie Miller about the history of the vacuum cleaner.
Before the vacuum cleaner, people relied on the basic cleaning tool that's been around for centuries: the broom. And by the 19th century, people used wooden rackets to beat the dust out of rugs. In the late 1870s, Bissell created its first carpet sweeper, which was a mechanical device that used brushes and rollers to sweep dirt off of the floor.
It wasn't until 1908 when the first commercially successful portable electric vacuum cleaner was introduced by Hoover. The Hoover Model O was less than half the weight of other "portable" cleaners. With its motor and fan, rotary brush, and bag that captured dust, the electrically-powered -- and expensive -- Hoover vacuum removed dirt and dust much better than the carpet beaters or mechanical carpet sweepers used by many people at the time.

@TheHenryford...The Hoover model O was produced between 1908, and 1909! The next model which we call the "Side outlet" was already in production in 1910! Contact the Hoover Historical Society if you don't believe me!

So, conversely, is this exibit somewhere visible to patrons on the museum grounds?? For many years a large section (close to the museum store) was located a place where one could see these along with other appliances in the main museum concourse. This has been gone for years.. Are these now someplace in the Greenfield Village section? Or are the hidden away under the museum, or someplace inaccessible to humans. Asking for friends who like vacuums, and were disheartened that there was nothing in the museum when i brought them last...

If you mean the Henry Ford museum - ask them. Museums always rotate their exhibits in and out of storage on a yearly basis. There is a self-owned vacuum museum in Saint James MO, he (tom gasko) had a falling out with tacony and took his vacuums and opened up a new museum.
