  • Here I go through the process of recording automation in Ableton through the DeepMind 12D
Here are pics of the settings on the DM12

Try using the control sequencer and mod matrix already inside the DM 12

Hi there! This is really useful so thanks a mil!
Just one thing though; (I think) you should assign the Rx channel to a specific channel instead of all - otherwise any other external gear/midi tracks on that midi channel will interfere with midi note/CC data with the DM12.
Anyways, I had a different issue but I'm glad I found your video. My desire was to assign a Novation Launch Control XL (LC-XL) (which is USB midi) to DM12 parameters. This requires a computer at minimum to be able to assign the CC values on the LC-XL editor to match the DM12 and then bridge them with a DAW. I tried and failed with multiple setting variations but after following all but your Rx channel info, I eventually got it to work. The first couple of times, I was unaware the LC-XL had actually stopped responding with Ableton so my head was melted from not understanding why it wouldn't work! Anyways, this now gives me confidence to buy a USB-host so I can jam DAW-less. Let's hope it works cause otherwise it'll be a wasted €150 haha

I am planning to do a part 2 of this video to go into greater depth on routing etc! Let me know if there is anything specific you think would be beneficial for me to include

Hey again Chilly. A couple things worth mentioning actually:
      1. When using the ARP on the DM12, make sure the ARP gate is open enough for the ADSR and other parameters to have as much depth as possible.
      2. Instead of spending an hour carving out a complex sound with modulation and recording quite a processed sound or you end up losing interest in the patch; give yourself the option to process the patch in Ableton.
      a) So choose whatever patch you like
      b) turn off the FX
      c) fully open the filter
      d) extend the ADSR parameters so if you load the audio into Sampler/Simpler you'll have lots of depth with these parameters. Just be careful not to overdo it that they overlap (too much release crushing dynamics or causing sharp clicking)
      e) Change the standard parameters if needs be until you get something tangible
hit record and name the audio clip with something descriptive such as the patch you used on the DM12.
      3. Then, after you've given yourself that creative safety net, get the CTRL Seq on the DM12 going with some interesting automation. Next, link parameters with the CTRL Seq in the MOD matrix. Mix in some LFOs too. Once you're happy with what you've got, save the patch and start recording into Ableton.

I seem to be encountering the same issue with my Korg Minilogue, I've just done 3 performances (filming) expecting my filter automations to be in Ableton and then they haven't been there when I've come to tidy up the recording! However when I've done a blank recording, not from clips in session view, I can record the automation! Not sure it's the exact same issue but may need to try your workaround if it is!

I got a Deepmind 12 yesterday, and will be hooking it up to Ableton, so this is certainly of interest to me. Just curious, can you save this out as. template (Ableton does let you save an external instrument's settings). If so... maybe these exist already, somewhere?

Probably too late for a response, But yeah, you can save a template with every external instruments with its settings that you created.
