Beware of This Barbecue Danger

- Almost 60% of Americans say they plan on having a cookout this Memorial Day weekend. But there's a danger you should be aware of: how safe is your grill scraper? The metal bristles can fall off, and if ingested, can cause serious medical issues. Chef Shane McBride, owner of the restaurant Pig Beach, shared some alternative grill cleaning options with Inside Edition's Alison Hall. An onion, a lemon or a dish towel may be safer options than a wire brush.
This is why us Mexicans have been using an onion to clean grills for ages!
Y’all taught me ong
You do that good.
Lmao
Im Bolivian, and my family uses onions too, and sometimes we use chicken skin

NAH… I LOOKED AT THE THUNBNAIL AND THOUGHT THAT WAS A WORM 😂😂
Same. lol I was shocked when they said wire brush.
yeah, made me click, thinking it was some crazy heat resistant parasite or something
This is what happened to me lol
Ok?

As a person who enjoys eating wires this information is useless
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
LOL
Bro 🤣
well now you know how to maximise wire eating!
Those wire bristles ending up in your food, if swallowed, could end in tragedy.
The problem is people don’t like to clean after barbecuing. They’ll rather bbq 10 times and then clean it. Keep it clean.
Hungry. Must eat. Food now, clean later.

Use plastic brush better than steel... baking s9da and lemon or vinegar..

Save me some wire bristles.
I read a thing where emergency room doctors were asked what’s something they see that’s kind of common that people would never think of. Several of them said this exact thing. That’s when I stopped using these brushes.
I thought those bristle were for flat surfaces not stuff like grills
i dont get it, why do you depend on just the brush to clean your grill? i use the brush all the time, but then i wipe the grill with a wet rag afterwards.. this feels like common sense to me 🤷
Eating the bristles is not too bad, but the pooping them part is no fun at all...
You read a thing, just reading that makes me feel that you’re full of bull.
@sharpthingsinspace9721 lol ok man. Idk what to tell you. I guess you’re one of those people who discounts anecdotes and requires peer reviewed studies for everything. I guess good luck with your grill brush then!
New fear unlocked. Swallowing metal wires.

When I was a kid, a Dad in my old neighborhood died because of a tiny piece of metal that got into his food.. he ingested it and began having severe chest pains. Went to ER and died there. Left behind 4 young kids a little younger than me at the time. This is no joke and people should take the necessary precautions to ensure their grill is clean, both before and after cooking.
Sorry for that man. RIP
Yup…I saw a tv program where a young man became mysteriously ill, hospitalized and nearly died from the infection it caused. No more brushes for me, I used a good tight wad of aluminum foil now and clean my grill after each use!

@@Maspets what sounds like a waste of food using 1 onion?
@@OrlandoReyes. Yes.
We use plastic brushes too not wires. I use wire brushes to clean out the rust and use rough sponges to clean out the grill.
This happened to my grandmother; the wire brush bristle nearly killed her. This is why we use a stone BBQ cleaner. I'm surprised no one has thought to recall those bristle brushes.
Name brands have stopped making them. China's the real problem here
Maybe they sell it by saying that it's for flat surfaces like floors, walls and people buy it for grills
@@Manik_khanna Not on amazon.
The stones work well. I usually rinse it off after cleaning too.
I VIVIDLY remember an epsiode of "The Monsters Inside Me" where a guy had a piece of bristle brush stabbed through one intestinal loop into two other loops, and it was that that was killing him instead of a parasite or disease
I remember that one too! It was pretty scary, but I’m glad that kid made it out alive.
Yep, it's actually free on UA-cam movies (season 5 through 8) I don't remember which episode I only remember it was in season 5
That's one of the few episodes I do remember. The metal bristle and the undercooked lamb episode.
Yes, he almost died because it entangled his intestine so badly that it was obstructed and the tissue was dying. Horrifying
I also remember that episode. He swallowed a piece of wire brush and it got stuck in his intestines, nearly killing him. It was so bad that he was vomiting his own fecal matter. We personally stopped using wire brushes after seeing that. Now we always soak them (the grids) in warm water and detergent and wipe them down with a damp cloth.
Imagine if they used metal brushes in restaurants? Yikes!
I've found a big piece of stainless steel scouring pad in some Chinese take out. 😮

@ItzDeploy no, they use a grill scrapper, which is a flat knife of some kind. I would know, I literally sell/bring new blades for them to restaurants
My best friend got one lodged in his throat and had to have it surgically removed. Had to wait a week for "emergency" surgery. Can't imagine the pain and discomfort for that long
An onion or lemon is a waste of food. Just take a nice ball of aluminum foil and rub it on the grates. Safe and coarse.
This would also work
This is what I do.
Sounds better, that onion didn't look like it was doing much.
Sounds like a waste of aluminum foil. I’ll stick with a brush because that’s what it’s made for 😂
I use the reject onions from my garden then toss them in the compost.
It’s been 3 years and im still waiting for the “fire is hot” video from Inside Edition
They ran this story 8 years ago. Only an idiot wouldn't clean their grill until a crappy metal brush bristle gets stuck and doesn't notice it. Fear mongers.
You can also use 97% isopropyl alcohol to clean the grill. Use an induction cook top at the lowest setting until its lukewarm, then apply it over the grill with a towel or something. It works like magic. It dissolves all the organic matter and residue, leaving your grill looking brand new. P.S: Isopropyl Alcohol is flammable. Dont use it near any flames, or it will catch fire. Use it with caution. Also, clean with some wet and then with dry towel afterward as isopropyl smell quite a bit.
Your literally playing with fire isopropyl will catch if there is any flames that lick up high enough
@carcarcool6262 You're right. Isopropyl is flamable. I use an induction cook top to warm it at the lowest temperature settings. It's working fine for me...
The more alcohol, the better the food
Argentina here... we grab highly absorbing paper towels and scrub the grill with it, or newspaper since the paper type is more resilient and perfect for it, as you scrub the great majority of the grease off you can use that exact same paper for ignition, which burns much faster due to the grease on the paper.

I use the onion method. My mom warned me another wire brush a few years ago.
Wait, your mom did what?
Been using a wire brush for 35 years. Never had a problem. But I don’t let my grates get crusty enough for wire to stick there
2 days before you use the grill use Easy off grill degreaser spray it wipe it down! When you going to use it spray canola oil as it heats up!
Sure, Lye from the Easy Off is way better than a measly rusted wire.
Who could've thought?
Canola oil belongs in machines. Not food or food surfaces, much less
Why not wash your grill next day ?
I've always just scraped it with the spatula, flat, and then tilted to get between the bars. Douse it in oil, light it up and burn it off! Job done.
What's life without a bit of danger👀
So, you're stating that, without danger, life is what, right?
Everyone should own a Mr. Bar-B-Q Oversized Scrubber Brush. It is made of long lasting stainless steel mesh, not bristles. It can stay outside and will not rust or leave wire on your food.......
"better just waste this onion to clean my grill"
Amazing
I still use a wire brush, but I also go through the trouble of using the little rounded metal corners to scrape off each individual grate. Never had a problem with eating bristles and my grill brush lives outside. There is inherent risk in everything we do, regardless of how mundane, you just have to be aware of the danger and take the proper steps. Although, I may have try out that onion and lemon idea just out of curiosity
dont use a brush...
Using a shelf as a grill is wild...
wtf.
😂
Been using a Grill Rescue for almost 5 years and I love it. Works great on my grill, smoker, and flat top.
There was a "monsters inside me" episode where a guy had one stuck sideways in his intestine or something and was throwing up feces because it was blocking the natural way out.
That episode has lived rent-free in my head for years
The last part would be the worst part of it I didn't know that was possible.
You’re supposed to let the fire 🔥 burn off your grill and use newspaper to wipe it down or a paper bag 👍🏾
Wtf? Hahaha, no.
Always clean up your grill after use
So, brush your teeth?
My brush is more of a hard plastic, not metal. I use mean green to clean the grate. Brush it under the outside water faucet. Washing of the degreaser and food particles. I still use an onion in the end after it’s preheated for extra cleaning and its oils helps food not sticking.
Doesn't beat the time last summer when I lifted the grill hood and a mouse crawled out from between the grates.
Well, at least it did crawl out before you started cooking. 😊

It's obvious that most of the people that barbecue don't know how to properly clean their grill. You see those wire brushes full of soot and burned food.
The best way to clean the grill is with a handheld wire brush and a small bucket of water.
Get the grill nice and hot dip the brush in the water and then scrub for a couple seconds right on the grill. Dip the brush again and repeat. Both your brush and your grill will be perfectly clean with minimal effort
Exactly. Don’t know why anyone would scrub down their grill and not wipe it thoroughly afterwards. There’s really nothing wrong with a wire brush when properly used.
It's finally that time of the year once again and I can't believe that it's Memorial Day weekend already too!
I use a stone and then follow up with an onion. I'll scrape with a spatula on stubborn bits. I cook BBQ competitively, never once had this happen in the thousands of times I've cooked.
or just use water pressure.
You use a shelf for BBQ?
Genius right
It’s the same exact thing. Same manufacturing process, same overall look. Most “real” BBQ restaurants have homemade kits.
I'm gonna try to keep that in mind, for sure.
So pleased for that woman and that her surgery was successful! Couldn't think of anything worse
It’s crazy how something that was perfectly fine back in the 90s suddenly becomes a very harmful thing in this generation
Imagine being offended by some random PSA
They had the same issue in the 90s. They didn’t have UA-cam to spread awareness.
It's a thing. I ate mud and climed trees as a kid. Fell out of them, and off my bike a kazillion times. Got up. Brushed off. And kept it moving. Kids today fall out of a tree, they break a neck. As with everything else today, they don't make em like they used to. Hehehehe.
@@MarshaABranch Did you eat metal wires too? xD
It's crazy how new research is always coming out and we're learning more about things that were considered harmless in the past
Omg on my 5th birthday this happened to me but luckily it was just on the top of my throat so the doctor pulled it out.
I got one with a replaceable head for this reason.
They're also U shaped through the teflon, not just bristles molded in plastic.
Just another reason not to cheap out on things, even stuff you think doesn't matter.
“This Seattle woman ended up swallowing a bristle” 😂 local news is so undefeated
All Mexicans know an onion and an orange or a lemon is all you need to clean that grill
Great info!
I'd recommend the Grill Daddy or whatever it's called, it's a mesh type of sponge with a firm handle from the popular sponge makers. You soak it in water and hit a hot grill. The steam helps clean off the grill. Works amazing! The back side has a scraper but no wire bristles so you can get tough spots too. Really solid option. I like to use an onion anyway for tradition but the Grill Daddy always cleans it really well.
use the wire brush, use a regular brush to brush the grill to knock out any unseen bristles inside, put food on
Don't forget to wait for the water to cool down to room temperature after you boil it, then drink it!
I've doing it wrong all these years!
Thanks for real news
I got a bristle in my gum, never again used a brush for grill
Years ago I saw a couple bristles stick to the grill. I haven't bought a brush since. Usually I just get the grill good and hot to carbonize everything, then scrape it with a metal spatula. After that, an oiled cloth does the trick.
Thank you Inside Edition for this video. Great helping video ❤👍
That onion thing is a very Mexican thing to do 😂 dad would always use that method.
Wow, I had no idea about this. I like the lemon idea, or oven cleaner.
This is a life saver,ty
Us Hispanics ALWAYS use the onion 😤
Bro I thought that it was a parasite from the meat stuck on the grill 😭 In retrospect, that doesn’t make sense bc the heat would kill the parasites/bacteria 💀
I thought the same. But my thought process was that some people don’t clean their grills and flies contaminate the grill afterwards.
Bad for you or not after it’s cooked off, I wouldn’t put it past IE to sensationalize it regardless.
Not if people like raw burger in the middle. Sounds crazy, but chefs really like it raw in the middle. Yuk!
@@user-ph6yh4hs9z - If you cook your steaks beyond medium rare, you’re not really enjoying the steak. Don’t yuk it until you experience it and there’s nothing dangerous about it since the inside hasn’t been exposed to bacteria.
Burgers should be cooked more medium, and pink inside a burger doesn’t mean it’s “raw”.
That said, even if the burger is rare, the outside is fully cooked and the temperature on the metal grates is much higher and definitely would cook off anything living.
@@HiThisIsMine yes , i have had med rare meat. Hate it. Must be fully cooked for my taste. You do it your way and i will do it mine. Then we will both be happy. : )
This information was published in the CDC M&M publication over a decade ago. The media has taken this long to report on what radiologist and ER doctors have been diagnosing for half a century.
In Argentina we use brushes made of Palmyra, it's natural and less dangerous than metallic wires, also we use paper once the grill is hot, but should be careful with the heat
Oh i work in a machine shop so i eat stuff like this every day. You just gotta toughen up your insides a bit and it'll be ok
In Texas we use a wire brush then a onion
After scraping your grill, use a large piece of tin foil to scrape over the grates. It should wipe all of the bristles off!
This is why Brendan from Santa Cruz Medicinals recommends using an onion to clean the grill because it cleans the grill of any seed oils, it also adds a nice flavor to the burger and it also doesn’t leave a mess on the grill

lol americans actually need to be told this its not just common sense to them. so sad
Everyone needs to be told. Not just Americans.
While the grill is still hot use thick steel wool to scrape it. Steel wool will not break off and leave pieces of itself on or in the grill. When the grill is hot it is easier to scrape food off of it.
Use a magnet to pick up pieces of metal bristle.
More importantly, use better utensils such as a scrubber with a metal coil, a pumice stone or even a ball of foil does the job well!
ayyyyyy like this comment make it the most likes
Use one with brass bristles, thwy don't rust. And check the grill for rogue bristles. It's not hard to manage something if you think.
Yeah, I remember Inside Edition doing a similar video in the past. The guy said you can use a magnet to pick up a stray bristles.
You can also spray them with oven cleaner, put them in a trash bag overnight, and wipe and rinse clean the next day. Just don’t do this when it’s still hot and on the grill.
use the wire first to get off the really baked on bits. then use the black brillo pad. after that you can wipe it down with some canola oil and a rag.
They stopped selling the wire ones at a lot of stores in Canada I’ve noticed
Okay, I’m never going to trust a grill anymore
I thought they were addressing about the known carcinogens found in grilled stuff: PAHs and HCAs. Specially after seeing how that food was in direct contact with the flames. 🤦🏻♀️
Well you learn something new everyday I didn't even know that 😮
That guy just had a burger date with that inside edition anchor
I thought it was going to be about worms spawning on unwashed grills😭
Good info!
Nylon folks... You can use the meal ones, but if you do, always, always follow behind it with nylon or something non-metallic. Onion, nylon, and all sorts of things other than nylon work pretty well, but obviously, a visual inspection also is a must since even the nylon bristles can come off.
IFyou can take your grill off. use oven cleaner that's great also.. or when you through cleaning it with the wire bristle that you can buy for a dollar at the Dollar tree. Just throw it away and buy a new one. But always clean it off again with paper towel or a sponge.
Stainless steel grates require a stainless-steel brush, cast iron grates require COPPER brushes, but you can use a scrub pad too! but the trick is to clean your grill when it's piping hot, RIGHT after you take you food off, and BEFORE you turn off the burners.
This usually happens with grills that aren't hot and cheap brushes. Also, none of these tips a new. People were cleaning grills with foil and newspaper since I was a kid. I've seen plenty of people do the onion thing. I use a grill stone sometimes too. I've even tried the grill "brush" with the rings on it. I've used them all with no problem.
Been knowing this that’s why we use what we got at the time either lemon, onions or oranges
