Hi Michael! My daughter (11) and I (also introverts) absolutely love watching your videos. We are in Perth WA. We are a new member of Josie’s channel too. I wanted to comment on another of your videos about the succulent Chinese meal 😂😂. Keep doing what your doing, we love all your content and really appreciate it. My daughter wakes up every morning asking if Michael or Josie have posted 😊😊 I love knowing that I can put you and Josie’s videos on knowing that it’s “safe” and my daughter and I can watch it together. It’s super appreciated. I also wanted to mention that you and Josie often talk about the video not going well when Josie’s drone got lost, just wanted to let you know that’s the video that got us hooked on watching you both!! So it wasn’t all bad!!
This is the best comment! Thank you so much for this. I shared it with Josie too. I’m glad you got the Aussie Chinese meal joke! Yeah, the drone fiasco hey? Felt overwhelming and like everything went wrong at the time, but looking back on it, what a beautiful place to be upset in 😂 Thank you for being here fellow introverts! ☺️
Don’t mind the staring… it’s probably 20% you being a foreigner, 20% being a big fella, and 60% extra being both…lol. Let me tell you a story. I was there some years ago, and was going to some high altitude place, and in need of some xxl size clothes. I went to that Uniqlo flagship store, and they told me in the whole of south west provinces in China., there is no size bigger than xl readily available. and my XXL is likely just an L in Aussie. Yunnan is a very versatile and beautiful place, and very very much worth exploring. I can guarantee you will be amazed. Have fun in China.
Haha yeah after 40 odd countries, probably half of those as a fat big guy (previously as a gym big guy) I can tell why I’m interesting to them - but staring is just always so different for me haha. To be fair, China has nothing on Bangladesh stares. Yeah - I was so surprised I found a hoodie that fit! Decathalon had good sizing for me actually
nah most chinese do not judge people like that so your size, shape, skin color, clothing, etc doesn't matter. it's mostly because they don't have exposure to foreigners and get deer in headlights syndrome lol. if you stay in china enough you will realize people just don't care that much what other people do. you also have to realize chinese do not normally just talk to strangers on the street so it's compounded by the fact that you are a foreigner and they get dumbstruck. if you break the ice with a ni hao and smile, you will realize most people will be happy to try to talk to you or help if you need.
my partner and I just came back from Kunming, very nice weather there. People are super friendly there. You and Josie should spend more time there, at least go the stone forest outside of kunming (0.5 hour train or 1 hour drive), it is insane. I can guess you guys are heading to Li jiang, you miss Dali. Me and my partner like Dali more than Lijiang. Good Luck on Jade Dragon mountain, we went there on a terrible weather day. Cant see anything on the top. But blue lakes under the mountain are still very pretty.
Hint: T**** is the only place requiring a permit for foreigners to travel. Foreigners are also required to group travel with a Travel Agency, I don't know why. Even Xinjiang does not require a permit.
Please please don’t mind the stare though I know it is annoying because we got stared at also and we are overseas Asian. But if you say Nihao to them they would give you the biggest widest smiles. It’s curiosity not hostility, rest assured. Kunming is known as the “spring city” for its mild temperature all year round. Enjoy your trips in China.
Agreed. I'm an Asian in Australia. If I stay in Sydney, no one really pays much attention to me. But when I visit smaller towns, I sometimes get stared at by the local people as well. It's not a pleasant experience, but I understand it's because they don't get to see Asian people a lot.
A little tip: when buying snacks from a roadside stand, it's best to choose freshly made food. For example, baozi (and other steamed pastries) at 8:05 are obviously leftovers from the morning batch that didn't sell. These have been sitting out for a while and won't taste as good. I recommend getting them in the morning.😂
Welcome! Kunming is the place I grew up until 18 years old. Now I've staying in Melbourne for nearly 18 years. I call both my hometown. Comparing other places I stayed, these two actually share lots of similarities. I really suggest you make some local friends who, and only who knows where to find the most delicious authentic local foods.
because no people in the rural areas can speak English, and no English sign except tourist area. You can even stay in the hotel with a foreign passport. You think you know, but you are dumb.
Michael, thanks for pointing out the history. That’s why there is an old saying in Chinese,,,”Better travel ten thousand miles than to read a thousand books.” Travel does provide us with different perspectives on things.
In Ecuador our guide used sugar (sweets) for the altitude sickness. Most probably not as good as diamox. If you can't find it, maybe some sweets might help.
It’s Chinese chess or Xiangqi 象棋. It is one of the more popular board games in China (also played elsewhere in east and south east Asia) where you have pieces similar to English chess. There is a square fort in the middle where the king lives guarded on either side by bishops. These are then flanked by elephant cataphracts, horse Calvary and chariots. There are pawns on the first defense line followed by two cannon pieces. The game is a bit different to the other chess game that is played called 围棋 or Go in Japanese where the pieces are just black and white
Welcome to Yunnan province guys. We just came back to Australia from Kunming. I am from Yunnan. My husband absolutely loves there. Compared with other large cities in China, Kunming has a smaller population and a slower pace of life. Quite livable. Please don't mind the locals staring at you, they are just curious, after all there are not many foreigners there. My husband is used to them staring at him all the time. Lol. The whole Yunnan province is stunning and well worth experiencing. I hope you enjoy your trip. Stay safe!
I lived next to the the salon product street for around 20 years, and 3 years in one of the old apartment buildings right next to the park you guys walked back in the end of Josie's video. 😀 Kunming is defiantly one of the best city to live in, glad you liked it here. I guess you guys are going to Lijiang or Shangri-La or Tibat? since you are getting ready for high altitude. So when you come back and want to spend more time here in kunming, I'm more than happy to meet up and show you around. Also happy to help Josie with her Chinese.🤭
China is an extremely underrated country for travelers. Only recently have I seen larger numbers of vacationers considering even traveling there. With travel vloggers such as yourselves, you are opening the door to so many people looking to travel the globe, looking for a country to travel to.
12:47 I think your gonna like the Dali Ancient City in Dali, which is also in Yunnan, there are plenty delicious restaurants to choose from and so many shops/activities, lot's of things are going on at night, make sure to check out Dali when you head back Yunnan!
As an American born Chinese who just came back to visit china for the first time in 2 decades, I resonate so much with your experiences. I felt like I didn’t know anything about the very country I was born in, as everything was so foreign. I really enjoyed watching you guys explore a new place and want to thank you for sharing the story. So many people are intimidated by China (myself included), and I realize it’s really not as bad as the media put it. If you enjoy cities, you should check out Shenzhen if you haven’t already! The food alone is worth the trip and I’d be more than happy to be your tour guide. 😊
There are 660 cities in China (excluding Hong Kong and Macao), including 4 first-tier cities, 15 new first-tier cities, 36 second-tier cities, and 70 third-tier cities. Kunming ranks 33rd in GDP in 2023, and is a second-tier city. In other words, there are more than 50 cities in China that are better than Kunming or similar to Kunming.
Wow, you guys are going to Tibet and the Everest mountain aren’t you? That’s amazing. Tibet is a place like no other. Mysterious, spiritual, and beautiful. Enjoy your journey!
I have to say I like Luckin Coffee which you were stood in front of at the start. They'll pretty much deliver any kind of food and drinks in China. I was getting my morning Costa coffee delivered for breakfast on my last trip lol
I can't believe you haven't tried the bridge rice noodles (过桥米线)yet. Please go to a restaurant(like 上座 or 过桥园)and try the bridge rice noodles . You will be happy, I promise.😊
If you guys like this type of laid-back vibes then I suggest you visit Nanning (capital of Guangxi) and Guiyang (capital of Guizhou), two cities roughly in the same region with similar vibes, and both are non tier 1 as well.
haha no sure if this applies to you but, I’m an introvert too, extremely introverted I’d say. Every time I go in public I’d hope there’s no public attention on me. I’d think twice about how I dress and constantly being aware of my surroundings and people passing me whether they are paying attention to my outfit, my look, my action and so forth. Most of the time it’s a subconscious mental activity that’s taking place in my head. So when you mention the staring, I’m instantly reminded of my own mental process when in public. I’d assume I’d be equally annoyed or even worse in your scenarios. But hay, not that much of a big deal right? It’s totally okay to express your true genuine feelings. I crying I can feel you man. Enjoy the trip in China❤
That game played by the men is Chinese chess 中国象棋 although the official English phrase of Chinese chess means 跳棋 in China which is literally translated into “jumping chess”. This game you saw is the most popular game in China since mahjong is always somehow linked to gambling and it is not encouraged by the schools and parents.
geezes, the weather looks beautiful in Kunming. In June 2024, we were in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing. Beijing's weather was sunny and fresh air. The other cities rained every other day. Regardless the 4 cities were beautiful and clean. However, the Beijing party district had lots of trash on Friday and Saturday night but it was cleaned up the next morning. The number #1 priority was safety and we felt really safe, even in the darkest alley-way. @3:34, we are SE Asian (Cambodian/American). We had a few stares, especially in Guangzhou and Chongqing, but the moment you say "Nihao" they all smile. The stare was likely because of their curiosity. There was one incident where two ragged dark-skin middle-aged men pointed and laughed at my son. My son is 189 cm tall about 100 kg, dark-skin, long curly hair. He looks very islander/Samoan. On the positive side of this subject, my son had many people come up to him asking "Where from" and chatted, wanted to practice their English, and just walked with him. China has a population of 1.4 billion people. So obviously we did not expect everyone to react the same to us. Overall, the people the very kind and are very helpful. My son is already missing China and wants to go back and so do we. Putting Kunming on our list. Thank you and subscribed. Looking forward to more of your China vlog.
I noticed that you put the content of the sachet into cold water. You should use room temperature water. Since you're in Yunnan province, you should not miss Dali and Lijiang. Both are nice places to visit.
This city was a key war supplies distribution city during WWII. As the Japanese took all the sea port cities, weapons and ammunition came into China through the mountain pass and the airport was used to fly supplies to the rest of the fronts. It was also the base of the Flying Tiger that was a major threat to the Japanese Air Force. Due to its geographical features, the Japanese Air Force was not very successful in penetrating into the area, but it was not impossible. They did a few successful air raids that did kill many civilians. Yes, that game was “Chinese Chess”. It has similar “characters” as Chess, but very different in strategy and how the different characters can move.
you didnt get scammed at 8:16 -- she said $6, but her accent makes it sound very similar to $5, which i can see how mandarin speakers can get confused.
Welcome to my city. The game you saw on the street called Chinese chess. And I highly recommend you to try the famous local food Rice Noodle(米线),like小锅米线、豆花米线and过桥米线.
you are so right, Kunming is the hub for Southeast asia, and lot of ethnic minorities out there. Visit rural area you will have another level of experience.
There are not many choices in clothing sizes in physical stores. My father is 2 meters tall and it is almost impossible to buy the right size in physical stores.😢😢 There are many online shopping options in China, making it easier to buy the right size.
Haha I get what you mean, but I actually do think Sydney is beautiful and I say it every time I go there. I just like urban landscapes and street scenes really.
Here's the hateful comment you asked for. I hate that I'm not in China this instant. I hate that you're not putting a video out every day. I hate your videos aren't longer. I hate that I'm drooling every time you guys dig in into all those wonderful food. In short, I love your videos! Keep them coming and thanks for sharing!
the older people are playing chess in the park. It's quite similar to int'l chess. The middle is the king bot without a queen. At the far left and far right are two cars車,only run on straight line, next to 車 are a pair of horses馬,can only run by one step plus one step at 45 degree. The king can't leave his palace, protected by two 仕 and two elephants象. hope this help.
U can experience different weather just only in Yunam province. At Xishuangbanna 西雙版納: it is summer At Shangri-la : it is winter So funny Enjoy Ur trip🎉 I visited Lijan麗江two months ago, very good
Michael is great! thank you and Joise for showing the real china to the world! The urbanization process in China has been well promoted, but many ancient buildings have still been preserved and many ancient style buildings have been rebuilt. You can see the integration and intersection of modern infrastructure and ancient civilization
@@wheres.michael BTW, there are many EV car stores in the mall's ground floor, you and Joise could have a try or have a seat, you may have a little surprise when you know the price. have fun!
i hope you are going somewhere else in Yunnan, not just Kunming. I like Kunming, but there's nothing there. Everything good in Yunnan is outside Kunming. Go anywhere - Yunnan is AMAZING!
Glad to know that you guys enjoy the stays in China so far, the old folks were playing the Chinese chess, kind of like international chess there is bishop rook, king and pawns in it, but there is no queen and knight won’t be able to travel that far, but really similar.. should learn the rules when you get the chance, will be very funny if you can sit there and play one game with seniors 😂, btw, I watch Josie’s yesterday, you guys went to Uniqlo, must be a while you guys didn’t come back NSW, the checkout here is also same for a long time, just put the item in the checkout box..but her reactions were so cute,😊, pls tell her to shout out more often on the main of this and 2nd channel. Love to watch your guys vlogs
I guess you maybe going to visit Tibet region. If so, would you care to explain what kind of special permit westerners need to apply? I live in the US and wish to go with my friends here. Thank you. BTW, love your video .
Multiple times in this video I talk about the reason we’re in kunming - to prepare to go up into the mountains to - guess what…. See the scenery. You just have to listen 👍
They don’t even know what it is they are putting in their drink. And I’m pretty sure there is no magical powder that prevent altitude sickness. Great video though, love their content.
Man, when I was living in SH, I dated a guy 195cm over 130kg, he was huge! And obviously he would get constantly stared at 😂or people shocked at his built . Really nothing racist , we Asians just almost never seen such big big guys😂

China not only has cities, but also natural scenery. It's very strange that Westerners only travel to China's cities.

@Gamerzombiepro1 I am from HK, Hong Kong is way too expensive, not worth it.
@@chrislui571 you are lucky that you are born there otherwise in China you will gonna be a slave in the factory
China is HUGE. Every city has its own culture and different dialects. The national parks Re very beautiful too
I noticed that you put the content of the sachet into cold water.
The old people are playing Xiangqi which is like a chinese chess game. You could find more info from wikipedia
you didnt get scammed at 8:16 -- she said $6, but her accent makes it sound very similar to $5, which i can see how mandarin speakers can get confused.
she said "lu" for 6, which sounds like "wu" for 5 because of her accent. usually 6 should be "liu", not "lu" in mandarin.
Welcome to my city. The game you saw on the street called Chinese chess. And I highly recommend you to try the famous local food Rice Noodle(米线),like小锅米线、豆花米线and过桥米线.
Thank you!
Oh are you guys going to the himalaya? I heard it’s generally safe these days for everyone but still be careful with the high altitude
you are so right, Kunming is the hub for Southeast asia, and lot of ethnic minorities out there. Visit rural area you will have another level of experience.
There are not many choices in clothing sizes in physical stores. My father is 2 meters tall and it is almost impossible to buy the right size in physical stores.😢😢 There are many online shopping options in China, making it easier to buy the right size.
The stare reminds me what my dog does when he wants to play tennis ball. He doesnt blink or anything lol
😂😂
At 17:00, that game is called Chinese chess (象棋 xiàngqí).
Chinese Chess, the game you saw old or middel age male play on the street, kind of similar to west chess, two side against to each other.
Is like me going to darling harbour saying it's beautiful. But for Australian going to darling harbour, it's boring same thing
Haha I get what you mean, but I actually do think Sydney is beautiful and I say it every time I go there. I just like urban landscapes and street scenes really.
Kunming has planted the best coffee in Asian. Why don't you find the coffee street in Kunming, looks like the name is Wenlin street or something.
Here's the hateful comment you asked for.
I hate that I'm not in China this instant. I hate that you're not putting a video out every day. I hate your videos aren't longer. I hate that I'm drooling every time you guys dig in into all those wonderful food.
In short, I love your videos! Keep them coming and thanks for sharing!
haha love this comment - thank you!
I felt that Xi’an would probably also be a great destination for Michael based on your amazement at the historic building 😯
Oh wow! They have " Tim Hortons " in China 😮 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇳 @ 28:57
Is it like Angle Food Cake?
the older people are playing chess in the park.
At Xishuangbanna 西雙版納: it is summer
At Shangri-la : it is winter
So funny
Enjoy Ur trip🎉
I visited Lijan麗江two months ago, very good
瑞幸咖啡到处可见,是我最爱的中国咖啡品牌。
Michael is great! thank you and Joise for showing the real china to the world!
The urbanization process in China has been well promoted, but many ancient buildings have still been preserved and many ancient style buildings have been rebuilt. You can see the integration and intersection of modern infrastructure and ancient civilization
The best cities around the world are those that mix old and new I think!
@@wheres.michael agree! 😄
@@wheres.michael BTW, there are many EV car stores in the mall's ground floor,
you and Joise could have a try or have a seat, you may have a little surprise when you know the price.
have fun!
17:00 17:00 Chinese chess, very similar to chess, but older than chess
those sashets are “rhodiola powder”
That's not a school @11:26, but a militia department. 🤣
Then you can try some local food in Kun Ming city such as Passing-Bridge Rice Noodle (GUO CIAO MI XIAN)
I don't think you could get Diamox 250/500mg in China for AMS.
You guys should have gone to the countryside for some natural scenery, and tasted the local specialty food: soup noodle. 🤫
i hope you are going somewhere else in Yunnan, not just Kunming. I like Kunming, but there's nothing there. Everything good in Yunnan is outside Kunming. Go anywhere - Yunnan is AMAZING!
hi guys, i think the game is like chess, but Chinese chess like in Japan I have that too, greetings from Holland
Take it easy! Some of the people staring at you were just curious about you as a Westerner, and they didn't have any malice.
I guess you maybe going to visit Tibet region. If so, would you care to explain what kind of special permit westerners need to apply? I live in the US and wish to go with my friends here. Thank you. BTW, love your video .
Hey! Keep an eye on the next video, will answer some questions for you
最近刷到的外国人博主都是在城市里走来走去,也不到乡村去看看自然风光,或是城市里的旅游景点或公园逛逛
Multiple times in this video I talk about the reason we’re in kunming - to prepare to go up into the mountains to - guess what…. See the scenery. You just have to listen 👍
I agree. I love Michael and josie because they love exploring
love your video
They don’t even know what it is they are putting in their drink. And I’m pretty sure there is no magical powder that prevent altitude sickness. Great video though, love their content.
We made sure to message our contact in the high altitude place to see if it was the right thing to take before we ingested anything ☺️
Hey Michael and Josie, I think you sgould get in touch with an expat named Guilao60 who has been living and vlogging in Kunming for many years.
你记错了,它住在广西南宁
They cover quite different topics tho. But I do love both
less water is the trick to taking sachet medicine ;)
Man, when I was living in SH, I dated a guy 195cm over 130kg, he was huge! And obviously he would get constantly stared at 😂or people shocked at his built . Really nothing racist , we Asians just almost never seen such big big guys😂
Since you have arrived in Kunming, you must go to DALI !!
the game the old men playing was Chinese chess
11:31 its a military facility😅fortunately you didnt film anything more specific
