Sadly, cancel culture, or what could be called proto forms of cancel culture on both the Left and the Right, go back further than even your examples from the 20th century. The earliest example of cancel culture on the Right I can think of (if it even still is cancel culture at that point of extremity and left vs. right is even applicable to politics that far back) is the Inquisition in Medieval Europe. On the other hand, I'd argue that cancel culture on the Left goes as far back as when the French Revolution turned nasty in 1792. Cancel culture scares me in that the worst form it has taken on the Right so far is fascism and the worst form it takes on the Left is in the form of Lenninism and the different forms of totalitarian "communist" regimes/ideologies that have come out of Lenninism.
