I've actually observed that they lay eggs in the flowers and when the flowers drop off the plants the eggs will hatch and the larvae will eat the rest of the bloom then eat away at the roots and base of your plants. So make sure to pick up the dead blossoms off the ground.
@@notagreenthumb4775 I've never read about before either... I figured it out last year when I had a lemon cucumber growing in a large container and it was heavily attacked by them. What made me start to wonder was that I would pick up the dead blossoms and find two adults on top of each other inside of it. I then started to check the flowers and found a few with tiny little white worms (larvae) I also found that I could bate the larvae out of the soil with a under pollinated cucumber and then throw them out. Now I look back and wonder if I could've injected it with BT. Hopefully I'll never have to.
Thank you! I lost all of my cucumbers due to the Cucumber beetle spreading its bacterial wilt. I was heartbroken!!! I had so many cucumbers and its was so hard to see the plants all wilt in one day!!!! I ended up pulling them all out. I was so happy to see that my bell and poblano pepper plants, zucchini and tomatoes continued to grow very well and produce! I appreciate your video for next year. I am going to be ready for them!!!
I’m so glad some of your plants survived! My garden got hit hard too. I’ve treated my soil with nematodes and plan on doing it again in the spring once the soil thaws. I also got my seeds for the blue Hubbard squash to plant a trap crop! Hopefully that helps!
i moved my cucumbers into pots. i now have c bettles. i will move some pots in different locations so all my cucumbers will not die. ill try the yellow traps and neem oil spray
Thank you for your video. I first noticed these beetles just a few days ago and of course looked them up on line right away. I’ve been killing approximately a dozen or so a day and will consider putting out yellow bowls of oil soap. I’ve also put out yellow stickums to see what will happen. Good luck with yours and remember you are not alone in this battle. Carol from Quebec
The stickums got too many good bugs so I’m now using my dust buster. Works like a charm. I empty it after each use into a plastic bag and I make sure they are all dead. Every day there are less of these pesty pests!
I m a rookie at 62, Lol . Doing research, checking plants. Squash ( zucchini, acorn , butternut, summer) I was a late getting started, got out for the wild turkey in Virginia.April, to knee replacement in early May. Few other family issues, all I can say is through everything alot of chairs. I picked up the seedling from down the street. Couldn't find a few thing then I had saved some 2 years ago for acorn and butternut ,planted seeds an wella. Started of checking plant for pests early, I killed a vine bore bug, 2 of the squash bugs, and roughly 5 of the cucumber beetles. Now I hadn t run across the cucumber beetle I just saw them and the sixth sense said they can t be good. I killed another squash bug today. I know, long story short I barrier all the root systems with dirt, all squash, Mellon cucumbers, etc then put coffee grounds on base of plants on the mound of dirt. I haven t had Any issues with any of the squash., the cucumbers and melons I was a little beside on and did the same to them. Knock on wood. I found a cluster of eggs on one of my cucumbers today. They have coffee grounds on the soon till then have to check them. I can honestly Say I never knew gardening is very involved, I planted it to save money and for my finances mother with be 91 soon, and she's coming home from rehab tomorrow she ll be quite excited. The garden is her thing has been all her life so, have everything primarily caught up , for her welcome home. Sorry for the BOOK, got caught in the moment , doing ,listening, seeing the tricks of the trade. I always thought you plant the seeds , water and fertilize, and control weeds. All I can say is Wow. So many people on the net is endlessly overwhelming. Lol
Please consider the effects on the environment when using chemicals. Cucumber beetles are easy to pick off early in the morning when they are sluggish. They like to hide in flowers and leaf bracts. Use long thin tweezers and grab them and put them in some soapy water. 10 minutes will get you dozens! Spraying with soap is only effective if the animal is directly hit with the soap, and the residue is not good for soil health. Using sticky traps works, but also traps your beneficial insects.
You can also use pure Peppermint Oil in water in a sprayer-it worked well for me, but still some lingering near flowers that I want to "squash"! ; search for Rusted Garden videos-this man, knows his stuff!
If we know that they have already laid eggs in the soil because I only learned from a comment here that they lay their eggs inside the wilted flowers, what do you suggest I do to get rid of the larvae so they don't return next Spring? Thanks.
Oh no!!! Get on them quick! The sooner you take action the easier it is to get rid of them. My sister-in-law waited about a week before she realized what they were and it’s not looking good for her 😭
What is the actual full recipe, you mention it briefly but it doesn't sound right to do a 1 to 1 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water? for 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, how many cups or litres of water is needed? thank you :)
Watched this too late. Plants succumbed to bacterial wilt disease in its adult stage. Glad I got one of each variety of cukes before I sadly watch my beautiful vines wither
Thank you for the information. I've never seen them before and now they are starting to appear on my cucumber plants. I'll give this method a try and then if this doesn't help I'll try Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap.
later in the season after making this video I started using a mixture of murphy's oil soap, water, and neem oil and I found it really worked well! Better than rubbing alcohol in the water.
Excellent content. I've actually watched a few videos you've got a lot of content. So how did it work for you? Good soaking the ground control the reproduction? Did it help? Because I'm totally being inundated. And I've got a neighbor with Beehives that I absolutely adore. I've been using neem oil after 9 p.m. doesn't seem to be helping much. Interested as to how well it worked for you. Thank you again
I wish I could give you a true update! We unfortunately had to move last winter unexpectedly to a place that I can’t have a garden :( hence the lack of content this year! I did find that the population did get less and less as the year went on, which some things I read said there can be a second wave in the fall. I found the neem was fine but felt the Murphy oil soap was better. I usually mixed them together. Best of luck to you!!
i saw them c bettles having 3some in my cucumber plants. didnt let them finished their business, i killed them with my fingers. ill try the sticky traps and neem oil spray
I just spent so much money on my soil so if the injected bacteria’s in there, what do I do ?? How do I know? Does the bacteria ever die on its own and how long does that take !?
Hey Johanna! I’m not 100% sure about this because in my research I got mixed information. From my understanding the bacteria itself doesn’t stay in the soil, but their larvae ARE in the soil and they carry it. So what I’m doing to try and avoid it is treating with nematodes. You should be able to find nematodes that are native to your area (these are ideal, but if you can’t get them native to your area I don’t think it will be harmful). I ordered mine online but most farm stores carry them. Sometimes home depot and canadian tire have them too. I treated once I pulled all the infected plants and then again a few weeks later. I’m gonna do it in the spring as well just to be safe ;) Also, be sure to completely remove any infected plants. Do not compost them. Some people will leave the root systems of plants in the ground to compost over winter. This is normally a good practice but if you have any feeling that the plant may have been exposed to the bacterial wilt then completely remove it. I hope this helps!!
I've never seen a cucumber beetle. I did have caterpillars that decimated my peppers. Next time I'll try the Murphy Oil soap. They hit so fast I didn't even get to use the dawn dishsoap cure. Looks to me like your learning a lot of the tricks of the trade.
Dawn dish soap diluted is the way to go I fried my eggplants leaves last year trying to get the aphids thankfully it didnt kill the plant. Gary, the rusted gardener has endless tips and tricks and a wonderful system and is well versed with his info.
I always wash my produce from the garden anyway. The Murphy’s Oil Soap is 98% natural so it’s TOTALLY safe!! If you read the back of the label it literally says if you ingest it drink a glass of water to dilute 😂
Hey!! I have a lot to say! (Maybe I should make a follow up video??) I’ll try to be concise! Plants I saved were zucchini, sunflowers, pole beans. Plants I lost were cucumbers and cucamelons (heart broken!!). I was careful to only spray in the evening except my cucumbers and cucamelons because they were infested the worst. I think it then sunburned my cucumbers, but not the cucamelons. This is likely because they were shaded by tomatoes. I would say it was effective, but you need to be diligent and you need to start as soon as you see any sign of them. In future I would add some Neem Oil to the spray mixture instead of rubbing alcohol. I had Japanese beetles show up a couple weeks ago and when I added Neem to the spray I was using for cucumber beetles it successfully got rid of both. No negative effects on any of the plants (minus the sunburn, but that’s only because I sprayed in the morning!) I sprayed on all plants, edible or not. I washed my produce when I brought it in, but it is safe to consume. My 15 month old nephew ate quite a few peas off the vine and he was fine 😂
Not a Green Thumb Sorry to hear about the demise of your cucumbers and cucamelons. Cucamelons took me a long time to get started. Thanks for the update. I’ve had some pretty significant damage from cucumber beetles but have been reluctant to treat with anything because I have a backyard hive and also concerned about native pollinators. I downloaded an organic and bio rations, Integrated Pest Management document from ATTRA. It’s a bit much for me to get into right now, but I’ll save it for winter reading and see what I plan to integrate into next years garden. Thanks again for sharing! BTW, we have the same growing zone, but I’m in Finger Lakes NY!
I am starting to sprinkle diatomaceous earth in the flowers and on the leaves. It sucks to do that because the good insects also get injured in there. But not very many. Versus all the cucumber beetles. I also drowned them when I see them, I will have a cup of water or some thing that is like a bug killer or whatever, and I will see them and I will put them in the water to kill them . This year I am finding that they absolutely love my pumpkin flowers. Heck to the no you're stupid insects
Spawn of Satan is such an accurate description for these pests. Thank you for the very informative video.
I've actually observed that they lay eggs in the flowers and when the flowers drop off the plants the eggs will hatch and the larvae will eat the rest of the bloom then eat away at the roots and base of your plants. So make sure to pick up the dead blossoms off the ground.
Thank you! I had no idea I have been dropping the Dead flowers on the ground myself😖
So interesting! I never noticed that! Everything I read said they laid them in the ground but now I will be sure to take care of dead flowers!!

Remember to get the bottom of the leaves, murphy's is great but it doesn't kill them if it doesn't coat them directly!
I've heard if castle soap but not Murphy's oil soap 😲😂🤗👍

The only thing that worked for me is spray liquid sevin at dusk when the pollenators are in bed.
I thought regular dawn dishsoap did the trick? Never heard of trying Murphy’s. Thanks for the info, might have to give it a try 😊
Yes! It’s 98% natural so very safe! I believe Dawn can actually kill some plants so you have to be careful what you soak with it!
