Awesome video. Brings back memories. Got Xbox Christmas of that year and made me a lifelong xbox fan. Also love the soundtracks to all those old games like amped and crazy taxi.
Xenon Xyanide did an excellent retrospective on the original Xbox. which made me buy more Xbox games, but you did great as well. I still have the original Xbox since Christmas Day 2004 until it stops working in late June 2016, but I did got another Xbox off ebay.com shortly after. The best part about the original Xbox is the custom soundtrack support, which I've been doing since 2005 beginning with WWE RAW 2. My favorite Xbox games are MechAssault, WWE RAW 2, PGR 1 and 2, Gunmetal, Amped 1 and 2, NFL Fever 2002, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell trilogy, Max Payne, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Serious Sam, Counter-Strike, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Full Spectrum Warrior, Freedom Fighters, ESPN NFL 2K5, ESPN NHL 2K5, MVP Baseball 2005, Breakdown, SoulCalibur II, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, MX Unleashed, DOOM 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War, Deathrow, THPS 2x, 3 and 4, Dead Man's Hand, Unreal Championship, etc.
Totally. Custom soundtracks were amazing on Xbox. 360/PS3 tried to carry it forward, but it's a shame it isn't a core feature of today's consoles. From those games you mentioned I've only never played Full Spectrum Warrior so I'll definitely check that out.
Awesome video about the original Xbox. The original Xbox is my all time favorite console. I completed my North American original Xbox set last year and there are so many wonderful titles to play on it.
Thanks! That's awesome about the full set. I've been picking up a bunch of third party stuff. It's the best console for a lot of those games now, and hopefully MS will keep adding more comparability to the Xbox one because the supported games look incredible there.
There's quite a few good reasons to still own an original Xbox. (1.) Xbox 360/One backwards isn't perfect especially on the 360 as more than enough games have frame rate drops like Doom 3, Project Gotham Racing 1-2, Sega GT 2002, etc. (2.) Their still dirt cheap going for less than $45 dollars in most cases. (3.) They play the best looking and playing versions of multi-platform games like Burnout 3, Mercenaries, and Prince of Persia. (4.) They're the easiest to get working with modern HDTVs. (5.) Easy to mod and install modern large capacity hard drives.
Definitely, I expected them to keep going with backwards compatibility on X1 to help give these games new lives moving forward (and make some $ off digital copies on new platforms). I glad they added a bunch more since this video, but sad to hear that they're stopping here. Hopefully they have some big BC plans for the next Xbox, but it doesn't sound like it. So yep definitely worth getting the original console for all the reasons you mention.
@@LostWithoutTranslation It was the first console I ever bought with my own money as a teenager. So I kinda have a big soft spot for the heavy black box.
The original Xbox definitely had the best graphics over the PS2 when it came to multiplatform games. I would love to find out what titles run better on the OG Xbox And the 360 compared to the versions released on the PS2 And PS3 versions because I want to play those games properly.
Definitely, it'd be interesting to know which multiplatform games ran better in each case, especially to know if any ran/looked better on the PS3 because of talented developers experienced in that hardware. I played quite a few multiplatform games on Xbox (and Gamecube) and then was shocked to play to the PS2 versions before I knew it was a weaker console. Visually I remember the Prince of Persia games being the ones that taught me that.
PS3 vs 360 would be really interesting too, but probably harder to figure out exactly after all the patches. The first couple years of PS3 was rocky in terms of quality of multiplatform games, I specifically remember Assassin's Creed 1 and Bayonetta being way more rough, and of course the Bethesda games. Unfortunately it's unlikely for anyone to actually do the work to figure that out, unless you maybe dig through old IGN/Gamespot reviews for each game, because most people would say the definitive version are the PC ones and leave it at that.
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost the account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
Great video. I really appreciate how knowledgeable you are in all of your retrospective videos. I've watched a ton of your videos and subbed. Keep it up!
Thanks! I've actually had my eye on that cable recently, as well as the Dreamcast and PS2 one through LRG. Will probably pick them up at some point soon.
@@LostWithoutTranslation You won't regret the Xbox HDMI cable. It is my go to way of playing it. I don't have any experience with the other two cables.
The original Xbox definitely had the best exclusives ever and no one could ever tell me differently. I really bet Midnight Club 3 looked way better on this console, but I digress. It really is, in some ways, the Dreamcast 2, since there is alot of exclusives on here made by SEGA, so that is what makes me enjoy this console even more. This console had better graphics and better performance than the outselling PS2.
Great video subscribed for sure! Just sitting and waiting for my xbox crystal and a couple good games like halo 1/2, black, project gotham racing 1/2 and dead or alive and in a couple of week my friend is coming over for some xbox lan :D But really thanks for the video will help me pick up the right games over time :)
I don't think the games perform much better. In fact some have minor emulation issues, but they do look better. They run at 720p or 1080i and there's an antialiasing filter that runs over them to smooth them out. Xbox One takes it even further, but of course it supports way less games than the 360 at this point.
Prices overall for good titles have climbed since backwards compatibility on Xbox One hit, but they started so cheap that even a 300% increase is almost not noticeable. Lots of local stores haven't adjusted so it's a great time to collect Xbox now.
Lost Without Translation Absolutely, I got Morrowind GOTY and Panzer Dragoon a couple of months before they were announced for the BC list for £10 each, now they are at least double that. SSX3 I also noticed increased from £4 to £20 once BC was announced. Really awesome to be able to find these while they are still in the wild and affordable to build a good library.
Nice. Morrowind and Panzer Dragoon are 2 of the top 10 games on the Xbox IMO. I need to get a copy of SSX3 again. We haven't had a good snowboarding game in too long.
It's a part inside the xbox. If you have an older xbox you should remove it, but some of the later xboxs won't work without it and it needs to be replaced which is much harder to do. You can search 'xbox clock capacitor' to find out about how to do that.
0:35 thankfully I have a version 1.6 original Xbox which fixed this issue with better clock capacitor. Not that it's going to stay perfect forever as eventually 1.6 capacitor will have the issue. One thing is removing the clock capacitor on 1.6 will brick the system unless another capacitor is installed which I have no experience with. My original Xbox still is working perfectly fine for me but I bought it used last year. It is a June 2005 manufacturer date by the way. The manufacturer date is why I assume it's 1.6. There is also the kernel number in system info in Xbox settings I checked to confirm it is. I can't remember the website that gave me that info though. As for 1.6 I am aware of some games like only 4 that have issues with 480p output on 1.6. I don't have any of those to check but I do know Panzer Dragoon is one of them and that game is also backwards compatible on Xbox One. I will eventually buy it to test as have my Xbox One X to play it on anyway. Worst case I have the composite cable for the original Xbox and a 13 inch CRT TV to play it on though I hate that small screen. Me I use a HDMI adapter which is actually so far great but it's just an adapter to use HDMI so does not upscale. I have my mClassic for that and to reduce jagged edges which is actually good as well.
I loved the first 3, but never got into 4. I need to give it another shot sometime. It's a shame the new HD remasters didn't included the additional features from the Xbox version. There's 2 spin-offs I never really got into as well, a PS2 fighting game and a tactics GBA game.
