he was my favourite .... i remember back in the days i would watch a south african rugby match just to see him 😊😊😥😥😥.. i loved his pace/acceleration n his accurate left foot in kicking penalties
I know this is late but I hope you see it anyway... I met Percy one day when my friend's son was trying out for Craven Week. They had a session booked on the field where the Stormers were finishing up their practice. Percy stuck around and had a chat and gave my friend advice to give his son. It was unnecessary, uncalled for and typical of this legend! Another incident that springs to mind is the game against Scotland in 1997. It was Percy, with a clear path to the line, who popped the ball across to James Small to go in and score his record breaking try. That unselfish, team first attitude was why I liked him so much. Well, that and RWC 2007 :)
Percy between 2004 - 2007 was Mr Consistent. When he came back in 2004 he was a total different player, matured and level headed. A great a goal kicker under pressure and great under the high ball. Thanks to Jake White and the selectors for believing in him at the time.
Ah love it. I remember Percy in the latter years of his career looked like he played somewhat scared (understandable seeing how rugby can smash a person over the years) however in the 2007 world cup he brought a high level of competence to the team and the perfect crowning of his career I believe.
Played 13,15,10 and 12. What a boss. Stoked when he returned to the springboks and won the WC gold in 2007. Great for sharks fans too. Had it all. I'll never forget when I was 11 and there commentator said "looks like percy found a bottle of peroxide" laughed hard. Still SA top points scorer.
It seems the theme of Percy's rugby was getting smashed on the ground by opposition after he'd scored a try. How often did people jump on him after he'd scored!
That's why he always wore those massive shoulder pads. The biggest in the history of rugby. I will always remember him for those oversized shoulder pads.
Anyone else see similarities between the angles Montgomery would run and the angles Huw Jones runs? He’s not that good yet but runs some really nice angles and solid runners. Is it a stormer thing I wonder? Maybe the same coach. I don’t know but if you do please let me know. Example: at 12:23 Montgomery scores a try against England in an almost identical way to how Huw Jones scored his in the six nations (2018).
I really like Percy and he was a great asset to the team, but also had his weaknesses. As a forward I have a low tolerance for backs that don't put their body on the line, and that's the one thing Percy was guilty of on a few occasions. But he was instrumental in the 07 campaign, and have us some great moments. Hats off to the man.
@@RealRugby Fair comment? a bit "soft"... I suppose you've told that to him in person? The amount of abuse he copped, particularly from north of the Jukskei at times was nothing short of DISGRACEFUL
Underrated 13... one of the few SA centres that could actually burn opposition around the outside. Poster boy for Creatine💪💪🦾🦾. I always thought he lost a yard or 2 on pace once he packed on beef... same as Habana.
it wasnt creatine my friend...that is for damn sure especially back in the early 2000's. That does not take away from the fact he was elite and a one of the fulback GOATS. Percy and Cullen are the best fullbacks of all time for me.
Eerstens baie dankie vir d awesome video! Kan ek maar net voorstel dat julle d jaar van elke clip gee? En dalk d plek. Want vir ons "historians" is dit baie interessant om the sien en onthou. Keep up the great work boys
MAAAATE LEGEND!!!! I was going to ask for a Monty montage, what a hero Percy is one of my main inspirations for playing rugby along with Jonny Wilkinson. He looked great playing 13 why did he move to 15 for SA, was that because JDV came along or what anyone know?
Epple Bradley Percy played full back throughout his high school career and also played full back at craven week. He made his name at WP as a centre mainly because Province had a gap there (it was before Fleckie really) and they had a solid back three in Justin Swart, Pieter Rossouw and James Small. After we lost our first test against the Lions in '97, the feeling was the Boks lacked potency in the back line and Carel du Plessis brought Percy in as an "unknown". He was fairly good on attack but was shown up on defense a couple of times against the All Blacks and Wallabies in 1997. On the end of year tour that year, Justin Swart was the first choice full back, but he got injured in the first test against Italy. That opened the door for Percy at full back and the rest, as they say, is history.
Cheers for the info & video +Real Rugby great stuff, hahaha i never noticed his shoulder pads now you say it they do look massive, still great player. I've never tired wearing shoulder pads when i play too restrictive for me.
i've had the privilege of meeting this man numerous times because my father and him were affiliates in business and developed a relationship, i remember spending time with his sons when i was younger having braais. whether you choose to believe me or not, it doesn't really matter. just reminiscing

A great player but post 1999 he had only his kicking left his running game he lost too much pace,I feel because he bulked up.Too many rugby players of that time thought you got to be a behemoth to tackle, nonsense tho look at the Japanese look at Faf de Klerk and now the players have learned its not about size only.

First Joubert and then Montgomery: what a pair of incredible fullbacks!
I never realized that they actually played together 😲
And now we have Willie :(
@@armandpretorius3378 he used to be much better than lately: i'm sure there's one stronger, around ZA...
The shoulder pads and frosted tips... What a legend though!
One of the greats,a real grafter hes entire career!👏
Loved watching Percy growing up………Nothing like seeing Monty in full flight
Monty had the most explosive acceleration
I watched him at Newlands leave Breyton Paulse for dead. And Breyton was no slouch!!
I played against both and I’d say that Joubert just had the edge over the first five meters. But flat our speed they were the same.

Exactly my thoughts as I watched this !!! One can only admire him for keeping his cool under those circumstances, given his volatile temperament!
5 years later I'm watching this again. Come here to make this comment, and see I've already made it. I'm getting old O_o
Ran into him at an airport about two years ago. What a humble guy! So friendly towards a stranger!

90% of his tries are a lesson in hitting the line at pace.
The pace!! It's rediculous!
He even beats the wingers for pace, unbelievable! What a Rolls Royce to have at fullback.

Best fullback in the modern game.
Maybe in SA. Still behind Cullen, Muliaina, B Smith, Matt Burke, Chris Latham, B Barrett…
