- After represented South Africa at all levels, including captaining the U21 Springbok side in 1996 and 1997 and playing for the SA Sevens team in 1997, Skinstad made his debut for the Springboks off the replacements bench against England at Twickenham on November 29, 1997.
The Zimbabwean born back rower was utilized as an impact player with great effect early on in his Springbok career. He scored a crucial try in South Africa’s winning Tri-Nations campaign in 1998 against the All Blacks and followed it up with a memorable try against the Wallabies a week later where a show of the ball and centre-like sidestep saw him dive over under the posts.
In 1999, Skinstad was controversially included in the World Cup squad at the expense of successful captain Gary Teichmann. There were reports that the decision caused a rift within the squad but the Boks still managed to finish third after narrowly losing to Australia in extra time in the semi-finals.
Two years later, Skinstad captained the Springboks for the first time in the Test against Italy in Port Elizabeth. He led the national side on 12 occasions with the Boks winning six, losing five and drawing one. After a stint in Europe, Skinstad made a successful return to South African rugby by playing himself into the 2007 World Cup squad.
He captained the side in the pool game against Tonga in which he finished off a superb team try and came off the bench in a further three games. His cameo in the semi-final clash against Argentina would prove to be his last as he announced his retirement shortly after the tournament.
He was a fantastic player who brought an amazing dynamic to any team he played if.
Enjoy! And thanks for watching.
Would have been a great bomb squad player for current day rugby. Watching this just after we won the world cup (2023)
Bob Skinstad try against Australia one of the 3 best I've seen. I'm still buying that dummy all these years later!
The dummy, the tongue, the step, the try. Bobby you beauty😂
What an athlete Skinstad was! Had an eye for the chance too.....good thing for him Venter was softening up the opposition with his brutal play.
At the height of his playing days Bobby was a superstar, the darling of the SA public - appeared in so many adverts etc etc. His longevity is also amazing considering he was part of the 2007 teams and he started playing from 96-98 or so?
I remember him getting isolated and having the crap rucked out of him by the NZ pack
There was a 18month period where Bobby was playing some of the best rugby i had ever seen. That includes all players. Man was a mercurial talent..then he had the car accident and that was that.
car accident/fight wish there was a shred of honesty.
Drunk driving.
the most skillful intelligent creative gifted player !
It was one of my saddest days in rugby when he got into that car accident and couldn't play again. He and Joost would have been the most dangerous combo for years.
HYTT NOG BAie na daai ongeluk gespeel
Miniete. He was kicked in his poes in a bar fight.
Awesome all round player!
One of the best N8s to eve play the game
18:58 He was the only ever flanker who could beat men like a winger
Bobby u beauty!!!!
when he changes into top gear at 18:10 just shows how much pace he had, a good flank on the move like a fleet footed greyhound!
Great player! Sad that Mallet used him to deprive the Boks of the 1999 RWC.
Great channel. I know you're gonna do a Butch James one soon.
Bobby whas a great loose forward even hee could played centre,,, best ever
Golden boy.
Hi, can you perhaps do one on marius joubert or werner greef
big werner greeff fan! Think he was very underrated
Corne Krige will always b my fav
Ok
Bulawayo blood in his veins.
One wonders who was doing all the work to get the ball and keep it when Skinstad was standing in the backline.
7.53 Thats where you see the real stuff start.
Better than Lomu
One season womder
Very skillful. Brainy not the bam bam of Vermeulen
true talent under utilized due to his knee
I wonder how he would have done in the nfl?
NFL? Men in tights. Bunch of sissies with pads, gloves and helmets.
Who would believe he would end up shafting the great Gary Teichmann
No there was space for Gary in the world cup squad but Anton Leonard was the one who ultimately took his spot. Could have had both Bobby and Gary there but Mallet was being a right doos
Rugby in South Africa is dead :( I played when I was younger my Grandfather said I would have been the next Os du Randt but rugby isn't what it used to be and I was really good too but now its not worth it :(
the champions are worth nothing ,are you ohk
It's not about your sob story.. SA rugby is far bigger than a wannabe. It's about all the heroes who graced the green and gold
今はなきマンテラ大統領もさぞおよろこびでありましょう。
Great player... Just not up to hard dirty, rugby..
Bartman ,het dood gegaan met bal .
Siya was /is die kakste wat ek al gesien het
Man was far too good looking to be a forward
A superb link man of the classic mold, playing in one of the springboks best eras.
Look how mobile rugby players were back then, a flanker like him would have the same mobility as half the centres we see now.
This is why we lost the world cup.We lost Gary Teichmann, best 8 in the world and best captain and none of the senior boks wanted Bobby over Teich but hey it was provincialism by drinking buddies Mallet and Solomons .Decisions made in the pub not always best.
Teichman was too slow and Mallet saw that
What I will always remember and love about Bobby,s rugby was his intelligence, coupled with pace and ability.
Magnificent player. What an acceleration, and superb link play.
Bobby Stinkstert
😂
Where’s that nice diving try he scored under the posts for the Stormers against the Queensland Reds? (At Newlands)
daai tongetje wat mama so love hahahahahahah plus die rugby obviously
He had some tough matches against NZ
Only mallet taught so
南アフリカチームの縞模様のユニフォーム、初めて見ました。
Ok
surprised you found 23 minutes of footage, skinstad was the ultimate showpony, enjoyed suiping and pomping women more then rugby, so average
As a Kiwi the Boks have had some dynamic ball running, big man loose forwards over the years. My back 3 would be..
6 Schalk Burger
7 Andre Venter
8 Pearce Spies
Res Bobby Skinstad
Or
6 Heinrich Brussow
7 Ruben Kruger
8 Gary Teichmann
Res Juan Smith
you missed one!!!
His name is Wahl Bartmann...When the term "Mongrel" come to face, Just look at Wahl!!
What about joost?
@@cowboyup6744 joost is a scrum half
@@garthfairfield8357 I know but he would be bloody good at back because he was known for his tackling
Mongrel is something different in New Zealand and Bart man played hooked
