This used to be my favorite song of theirs! Thanks for doing so much Smiths, your reaction channel is my favorite because your reviews are always so thoughtful and personal.
I interpret the song as being about a bitter young man who envies and sort of hates his former high school friends because they are successful now, and he isn't. They've moved on and he still hasn't even gotten a job, and he ruminates on his old successes. At first he fantasizes about still being friends with them and hanging out with them in their car. However at the end he is imagining being tied to their bumper and dragged to death, because he sees their successes as physically hurting and tormenting him.

Thanks for doing some smiths reviews! You're the best at reacting to their songs. Can you do Cemetry Gates or This Night has opened my eyes when you get a chance? Both have interesting lyrics and theyre widely considered some of their more underrated songs. I think you'll enjoy them a lot. Cheers Marcos

I think the smiths are so much better as a live band, the live in Barcelona version is much more up tempo, and the chorus is very bare bones which I actually like a lot because it really lets the overall groove of the song shine. Think the same can be said for hand in glove imo. Give them a live listen and I think it might give you a different take. Just my thoughts! Thanks for the reactions!
