I just did this myself. Bought a 1972 Saab 96 half a year ago. It had been in a barn for about 30 years. After some minor fixes and a new battery I could drive it home. There are some interesting differences between the swedish and american versions. Like headlights, mirrors, air intake and stuff.
Not wanting to make a profit on it speaks for how much the owner really likes the car and wants the best for it. I really respect someone like that. It looks like you'll be able to save the 96. They were lots of fun and have become very rare. Looking forward to seeing it come together.
Mentioning The Saab Sonnet brings back memories for me. My best friend in high school John Whitsell rebuilt the engine to a 1969 Saab Sonnet in 1973, our senior year. In central California we didn't have the same corrosion problems you do in the north east, so the metal frame below the fiberglass shell was in perfect shape. Great little coupe! Rode in it many times with him, cornering I remember was unbelievable. It was the first front wheel car I ever rode in. Look forward to seeing your restoration of this Saab!
Very nice find. That vehicle is practially road worthy already. I'm looking forward to seeing the work you that put into it to do the restoration. The interior especially looks great.
Yeah, that guy was really not being fair at ALL. I was listening to him the whole time waiting to hear the typical seller's spiel, but he was actually bad mouthing the car a bit more than I expected even though it was obvious he loved the car. Pretty nice guy friggen giving you his baby, but I understand his reasoning... Hell yeah I do, give it to somebody that will not only bring it back to being road worthy but film it and make it available for everyone to see. I for one can't wait!
a new batery, a bit of t-cut, and you will be on the road, my project is an FZR600,the things you come up against like siezed bolts on brake calipars, ive been drilling and tapping all weekend .
+Mustie1 I would appreciate it! I will pay for the help! It's in Needham MA about 45 minutes one way. The plan is to go there Sunday morning to extract it. I think I will bring the Sonett's wheels.
That's so awesome! It's just incredible that the owner is willing to through it in for free, so it can be loved again by a new owner! Please keep us updated because I think everybody is very curious about how the new Swede is going after restoration!
Way back in the 1960's these Saabs drove in the East African Safari Rally which used to take place during Easter hollydays. It was a tough and grueling route that went through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Old childhood memories.
finally do you realise how long i have waited for this moment i cant wait to follow this project i love the shape of these 96 have you noticed how the window goes down it moves up and down at an angle
I had a 1970 96 and a 1970 95 at the same time. I sold the 96 and then came across it in an intersection with the nose all smashed in. Both cars had the pinto carbs. I got them in 1974 or 75 for $400 each. It's deja vu to see the footwell trash cans, and the freewheeling lever
REALLY looking forward to see how this project will take pace. Nice looking car, never seen a red interior in that era 96... At least not in Finland, that is.
Wow! If you need any help worker-wise, I'm available. No trailer though. I'll consider it a race to see who can get their project on the road first. Good stuff.
I haven't seen one of those old saabs out here for years. There probably weren't that many out here in New Zealand to start off with. From what i saw of the body it wasnt too bad except for the rh rocker panel. You won't get to see the full horror of it until you pull it out of his yard and put it on a hoist (lift). The price was right. ha ha I used to do work on the 900s and turbos. They are tough cars. good luck with it.
That car would have been better off without the plastic tarp trapping moisture. Best to leave them uncovered . I had a '68, got me through college in the brutal Wisconsin winters, loved that car, SAAB used to build sensible rock solid cars. The 99 was the last model built well. Just my opinion, don't start hating on me.

forget that! I'd want big bucks those things are rare, there's money to be made !
@@grapewater123 Commodifying everything has ruined so many hobbies, keep your speculation to yourself.
Ha ha, someone suggested Mrs Amesie saying the cabbage catchphrase and you did a great job! Love these videos!
I think the "Saab Gods" were shining down on you! Nice find!

Right, having watched the whole vid, (after another 10 of your other vids) you've just reached hero status! Keep it up! Magic
My older neighbor had one very similar, it was Green, back in the late '70s early '80s. Very nice gentleman, very nice car too!
My dad had a 96 when I was a kid, fun little car. Also part of Finland's automotive history as it was built over here as well
Hey! Congrats on getting a new project car! Can't wait to see your next videos!

Good luck with the project. I'm looking forward to seeing you resurrect it.
When i was a kid we had a neighbor with a 2 stroke version of that car. It could kill mosquitoes for miles and sounded like an old snowmobile.
+sail235aeh Good neighbor! Are sure it wasn't a Skoda Rapide? They looked similar.
Gratz, it seems like it has great potential!!

How about an Amesie & Mustie1 project.. would be great videos..
I prefer the 93 to the 96 but my dream car is still a 72 sonett iii
With that in mind any advice on what to look for when buying a sonett iii
I am very curious if you got to keep that watch you found in the car, and what it was if you did.
+Aspra As am I
+Amesie's Automotive Corner post a video of it if you do get to keep It! It's cool how it's probably been in there for so long.
Does the sonnet have a reverse lock like the 96?
right here right here 😂😂😂😂😂
You can get it for free but still insist on paying? Good to hear such people still exist. You''ll never get rich though!
she does not look too happy
What happened to the blue 96 at the King of Saab?
btw...the wife speaks! 8^)
...does your 9-5 have cloth interior??
+FrankTheCat That's the Maxima. It's more of a highway burner than the 9-5.
+Amesie's Automotive Corner wars happened with that abandoned saab sonett
10:53 What was the watch by the way?
tarp is nono
No trailer I'm afraid.
