Many thanks, I'd fitted hundreds of windows before retiring, but never changed standard to egress hinges, my Mate who supplies my windows, explained about the holes, but I didn't really get it, until I watched your video, So, a big thankyou, as I'm doing the job in South of France and maybe would not have twigged it! ;) ...

Replace with easyclean hinge that way you will get the fire exit you will need in a bedroom 620 opening

The difference between top and side hung IE the opening angle personally side hung I use egress hinges so they open at 90 degrees and I use the one with a slide for easy cleaning

Best to explain you are using 13 mm hinges If the diy enthusiast buys 17mm hinges they’ll be all day and never work. You can buy packers- WASHERS that will convert 13 mm - 17 mm and also remember always take the glass out if possible especially when the beading on the inside like in video makes it SO MUCH EASIER. Not forgetting that bedrooms if renewed will require fire escape hinges.

The side hinges have slotted holes to allow adjustment on bottom opening window tht is the difference, the black plastic on top hinge is to keep hinge clear of window frame. Cheers

Exactly the same but different as you point out, that’s why they’re top one side hung and have a plastic spacer … duh!

Not necessarily some old hinges were riveted in to replace them you'll need peel backs

How did you mark the first four holes, you seem to have missed out the hardest part of the job?

Sorry which first four holes? Do you mean when I am putting back the window?

@@totaldiy2504 hi thank you for replying, as you are fitting the window back in and using a different style of hinge, how do you mark the position of the new holes before drilling

@@totaldiy2504Please reply to the op. We all want to know how you marked those holes. People ALWAYS miss details in DIY videos. It's very frustrating

Side surely means side-fitting/left-hand side and top means top/reverse one of the hinges..??

They might but I didn’t see any difference.

First don’t buy replacement friction stays from a jack-of-all trades like ‘Screwfix’, go to a professional trade counter who is more likely to have an exact replacement hinge. The replacement screws are critical as they need to match the thread type (plastic or self tapping) which is also dependant on whether the system profile has plastic or metal reinforcement. You can use the same holes with a larger diameter ‘repair screw’ of the same type and length. If you don’t want rust use a stainless steel screw of the same type, again go to a specialist trade counter for components. The last thing you would want is the potential disaster of a ash window failing and dropping.

Actually Screwfix sell decent ones. I use them occasionally if I don't have the right size on my van. They are slightly dearer, but they are decent.
